About the Game

Hatch is a PS1 / N64 style first person climbing game. Unforgivingly challenging and heavily focused on atmosphere, it's meant to mimic the feeling you get when rock climbing - frustrating, but highly rewarding when you reach the top.

There's more to it than the mechanics however; so be patient, careful, and enjoy the views on your way to the top!

Estimated play time: 30 - 60 minutes (or more)

CONTROLS:

WASD to move

Hold shift to walk

Mouse to look

Space to Jump

Climb by walking or jumping on angled walls

R to Respawn to the last checkpoint

Esc to pause in-game

It was fun! I had a good time with it at least. There were definitely frustrating parts that I felt weren't my fault when I fell, which can really turn me off of a game like that. I can keep going as long as I know it was my fault but in some cases here... Some of the walls you are able to climb aren't always super clear if you can or not, leading to some amount of trial and error, but that oddly fades as the game goes on. The controls never felt super "on" to me, like there was always a little bit of something beyond my control. You climb incredibly slow leading me to sprint and jump all over the place which in some cases just threw me off the side of something when I was not expecting it to, compounding some of the frustration. The checkpoints should probably be a little more generous in the beginning (by far the hardest part, and not because you don't know what you're doing, if I were to restart right now I would still struggle). The atmosphere is pretty great though and it's worth a play just for that. It's worth the three bucks and it was a fun hour and a half.

I just bought and played the game on Itch.io today but seeing HATCH without any reviews here on Steam, and the fact that I greatly underpaid for the game at the $3 USD price, had me double-dip to leave this review. So don't mind the miniscule playtime, actual clock would be a little over an hour to complete. The premise is pretty simple where you jump up angled walls and avoid a oddly shaped Sun but as you get higher and higher things get more and more dire. Thankfully there are checkpoints (often signified with something you find on the mountain, at least early on) so this isn't something where all your progress will be tossed away with one bad jump but, especially as you reach the peak, they do start to get a bit distant from each other. It can be incredibly infuriating at points, but it was hard not to instantly pick the game back up again after I fell. I had to make sure I was putting myself back in my seat as I took more and more leaps of faith and leaned into the screen (once you start to see the shapes for what they are you can assume speed-jumping around a rock will give you the slope you want). I found the game to be incredibly captivating during my playthrough. I can't recall the last time my palms—let alone the rest of me—got this sweaty from playing a game, or how uneasy I felt as I shimmed around a bit of suspended rebar. Reaching the summit was a fantastic feeling though and capped off a great experience.

I liked and hated this game both at once. It's very difficult, and I don't entirely think it's for the right reasons all the time - but it was compelling enough for me to finish it, and it was really rewarding to finally reach the top. It's worth your time, as long as you know what you're getting into. A couple small gripes are no controller support and no saving - this is a one-shot game, no stopping and coming back later unless you want to do it all over again.

Fun Short game. Feels like a longer KZ map with some interesting mechanics, would recommend when on sale.

An interesting little experience. It felt like a more meditative and less frustrating version of Getting Over It in a way, and reminded me a bit of climbing to the secret garden in Shadow of the Colossus without the stamina meter. An enjoyable climb up a harsh mountain, the path forward not always clear, never knowing how much further you must go nor what awaits you at the summit. Certainly not a game for everyone, but definitely worth a shot for the $3 price tag.

Small climbing game lasting between 30 minutes and 1 hour. There are two interesting mechanics, you can walk right up any incline less than 90 degrees and may not stay in direct line of sight with the sun for more than a few seconds. This teaches you to start recognizing even walls right at the cusp of vertical as pathways to climb higher. When you find yourself approaching the sun-facing side of the tower, you plan routes that give you brief cover. It's engaging for the brief time the game lasts. The graphics and sound are minimalist. The geometry is mostly stacked and overlaid primitives, placed in such a way to provide multiple climbing routes. However, as you climb things become more noticeably designed. A couple small sections had architecture and textures that when paired with the aggressive bloom felt like a PS1 interpretation of the castle from ICO. The sound effects are simply functional crunches from your movement, and a creaking noise as you shrivel in the sun, letting you know to find cover. The music consists of a short ambient track that becomes more noticeable as you climb. There are no video options I could find, so the game will likely run at hundreds of frames per second, maxing out your GPU unless you externally limit the framerate. The pairing of the two main mechanics make it worth a few dollars for the time. But I wish there was some time to explore the small area at the top before completing the game just to let me bask in the satisfaction of climbing.

You hatch from an egg with one purpose in life, climb the mindbogglingly tall mega-structure. While the game isn't tagged as horror unlike some of Rubeki's other games, I definitely consider this a horror game. The heights, the ridiculous leaps of fate you need to take, the predicament you find your fellow hatchlings in along the way. The game isn't without faults of course, the lower levels of the structure have a severe lack in variety when it comes to textures making you think for half the game that it'll all just be brickwork. You can't look up the controls in-game so I thought you had to spend a bunch of time falling to your death when it turns out there's a button to reset to checkpoint (which you can read here on the storepage.) The checkpoints seem to be somewhat haphazardly doled out, in some spots there are several very close together while in other parts they are frustratingly few and far between. But overall I really liked the game. There's something pretty satisfying about a game that has no shooting, no gathering, no points to increase. You just travel, but the travel isn't just walking.

Constantly getting lost not knowing exactly where to go from here because the landmarks and checkpoints are too rare in this very dull-looking landscape isn't exactly fun.
