  So, these UFO games. Put together by ALTAR Interactive in 2003 as a homage to the X-COM game series. By god, buggy as all hell, but the XCOM spirit is alive. Wikipedia says Julian Gollop was involved from the beginning as part of a company called Mythos Games, but they shat the bed and went bankrupt, handing it over to ALTAR to finish with new assets. Anyway, my brother had these tucked away on his bookshelf as a triple pack boxset, I think he got them from some bootsale street stall in Montenegro or something. I ending up playing these on CD around 2008, really enjoyed them, the first one crashed constantly though. The usual Squad Based, pause time gameplay with Gear and loadout customization stuff. Atmosphere is mostly dark and muddy, gloomy. Base building stuff and expanding territory is cool. The 3rd one has some good character custom stuff. - The last humans left on Earth. 8/10

  Like XCOM? Play this. It's somewhat crustier than the original XCOM games, but has it's own unique brand of charm-especially the base mechanics and the fun fluff details added in the research tabs. You dont get as much granularity perhaps, and you're more encouraged to train up one squad of badasses instead of crosstrain multiple groups, but the weapons are fun, the tech is fun, and the enemies interesting. Not to say it's perfect-very frequently the aliens can get off insane snapshots, or spot you from across the map, and the AI isn't top-tier, but it's still fun as all hell.

  Graphics : little grainy people.... Sound : All is clear and easy on the ears Game play : As simple as it gets, with a few quirks like pressing OK to do a simple equipment change, but good and simple as it comes Stability : No crash nor bugs so far Replay-ability : Not much in that sense, considering no achievements and hence once till the end is enough i think Overall i play this for nostalgia, i played this like 20 years ago...so, yeah nostalgia.....

  It's a fun, older title in the Steam catalogue akin to the X-COM series of games. You fight to recover an Earth that has been largely depopulated by a malicious alien menace in a pausable, real-time strategy game. [b]PROS[/b] +It's challenging, but not impossible. (Hint: Let them come to you sometimes! Choke points are an essential tactic later in the game!) +There are several different damage types which are stronger and weaker against various enemies, forcing the player to strategize and take squads that have a variety of damage types. +Most weapons remain relevant throughout the game--there's only a few instances where one weapon was genuinely superior to another. +Game has multiple endings. Three, to be exact. I can't spoil them obviously, that's not the point of a review. +Real-time pausable element provides an interesting twist to the usual turn-based X-COM formula. +Geoscape is aesthetically appealing and directly reflects how well you're performing in the war against the enemy. +It has a plot. With twists. ... [b]CONS[/b] -Level designs are fairly basic and sometimes infuriating. -Enemies can sometimes be spawned [i]beside your men[/i] before you even get a chance to do anything. -The last couple levels show signs the game was rushed out the door. -The voice acting is so atrocious it's hilarious. Go to the options menu and turn off voices. -It has a plot. With sometimes [i]stupid[/i] twists. If you really need a numeric score: 7/10. Playable, fun, appealing to people who enjoy X-COM and Real-Time Strategy games. [b]PS:[/b] If you have a widescreen monitor or are encountering technical issues, you may want to run it in a window with a couple other settings. To do this, right click on the UFO: Aftermath in Steam and select "Properties", then select "Launch Options". From there, add this: --options multisample=4 anisotropy=8 loadall=FALSE video_caption=TRUE --option fullscreen=FALSE Have fun taking back the Earth!

  This game is alright. It's someone else's re-imaganing of the original XCOM games. The game is real time, but it can be paused whenever you want. There is a global map screen where you select missions, though they appear at random. UFO interception is purely RNG. You can have a dogfight end with all of your jets intact when they have no upgrades, and the same UFO can wipe out your squadron with full upgrades. In battles, your squad is limited to a maximum of 7. Soldiers gain generic XP for kills/KOs, and you can then choose which attribute to level up at the end of the mission if they get enough XP. There is no economy to speak of. Good for those just wanting to get into this type of game, but maybe a turn off to those who want micro-management. This game is certainly more macro-management on the globe screen, with micro-management for your soldiers (don't forget to pack extra ammo!). The aliens late game can be brutal. I get the feeling I'm doing something wrong or using the wrong weapons, but they can drop my soldiers in 2 hits even with the best armour. I'm using some of the strongest rifles in the game and it takes 10 hits to put them down. I'd give it a 6/10. Not a masterpiece, but enjoyable enough. I should also note, that this game does not fully support the Steam overlay. You can still access it, but key presses are still registered in game. So typing in chat leads to a load of key presses in game.

  One of the first attempts to take the X-Com formula and upgrade it to newer/better graphics... Funny how those graphics are outdated again, but the gameplay is still pure gold! I got the retail version, anyway I had to get this gem of a game on Steam! Now that I undusted my 4:3 monitor and plugged it into my laptop, I was looking for games that could fit the resolution and this game is perfect for that!!! Thumbs Up! :)

  I'm actually a big fan of the series and would have loved to see them do more games like it in different settings. The engine is smoth and the animations are fun. Play the story though and enjoy.

  This review is going to see contradictory for a bit but it will make sense in the end. The sites to attack/invade are ultimately repetitive, enemies spawn "behind where you searched" at times, you will likely want to turn the voice acting off, it is incredibly reptitive and gets annoying after a while and the graphics are getting dated beign limited to 1024x768. I coulnd't get it to run on my machine but I blame that on my dual GPU card, I have an R9 295x2; but it runs fine on my original Surface Pro, that is of course a single gpu Intel HD 4xxx graphics processor but it is too small to see on that screen. I had to install it in VMWare Workstation to get it to run and then full screen it to my 28" 4k screen without scaling. There is also recomdations to run it in a window to get it to run on steam (they are not hard to find); none of which worked for me but might work for you. After all off that, why am I recommending it? I LOVE RTS pausable real time strategy games where I can redirect my instructions to my pieces/avatars are paused. If you played any of the Xcom games of the 90's, this is a simplified version without currency or other resources other than time, you can not research or develop more than one thing at a time, unlike Xcom games, and the number of bases you have drives what you can do instead of assigning qualified staff. But as I mentioned above if you like assigning staff to RTS pausable strategic combat, this game can be fun if not a little bit simple. I picked it up on sale and have NO REGRETS, I found a work around to my graphics issue and do truly recomend it if you can tolarate low graphics, bad sound and limited design. It is a fun game to a true Xcom fan, just don't look for the same depth.

  A good, fun game and a worthy succesor to the original UFOs; loved the grim post-apocalyptic atmosphere brought forth by the dirty, dark graphics, incredible music and the story of the world you find yourself in. Well worth playing even today.
