I debated writing a review on this, but figured I'd share some basic info/thoughts I have as a casual player. First off, keep heavily in mind that this game is designed with the working person in mind. So you won't have anything that's super heavy grind requirement. So there is lull between content, but same time they are currently giving steady content due to playing catch up, since the game has been around since 2018 in China. The combat is like some games you may or may not know, but it's not extremely hard, or button mash heavy. You can just hold down a few buttons, hit filler abilities, or crowd control as needed. It teaches you through tutorials the majority of everything you'll need from combat, to extra stuff. When there isn't a new raid/content there is other stuff you can do to fill your time. Like building your house up once you reach the level to own it. Treasure maps and treasure compass seeking. Fishing events or seasonal events, dailies are optional based on what your focus. There is also Lantern realm bosses, among other things. The game is not grindy at all. Just take your time, and the game respects your time, and has ways for you to catch up very easily gear wise. Some perks of the game if you like playing on alts, is your house is owned by all your characters. So you can access it from all of them once they are of level to do so. All pet skins, clothing skins, accessories, and mounts are account bound. So basically you have this massive shared inventory for those things. There is a shared stash as well, but it's limited what you can send through it. Iron/Gold is not one of the things you can send that way. But you can share with alts a variety of things still. The story is lengthy and if you enjoy Wuxia styled dramas, games, stories, or books, this game would be down your alley a bit. The game is visually very beautiful. And overall I have enjoyed my time in it so far. I can't invest hard core like some people but what time I can invest I'm happy with. So long and short, this is a game designed with the casual person in mind, if you don't mind that, feel free to give it a try. Or watch others via streams that are actively playing it. I'd recommend looking into more reviews before going off mine for a decision, as it is a purchase game (Edit 6/24/22: was a purchasable game, now it's free to play, but still research before investing time into the game). The game is not P2W if that is a concern, however the cash shop costumes can become super hefty price wise with time. Costumes/outfits aren't necessary to progress they are just pretty. As well the game doesn't require a monthly sub. Maybe this review will help you, maybe it won't. But that's all I have to say about the game for now. Edit 6/24/22: Since my review in October of 2021 months after the release of the game, not much of my opinion has changed, but I also have not played it as much as I did at first since there was a lull for me, I came back for the Fox Mage for a bit. And come back every so often. I play the game now mostly just cause I enjoy the casual aspects of it. This is why my single edit in my full review above prior to this additional edit, is simply suggesting that even if the game is FTP now to still get a feel for whether you'd like it first. Though trying new games is never a bad thing. I still personally enjoy the time I put into it even if it's only a few hours ever few weeks. Compared to several hours a day at the start. Hope this review still helps people.

I am the guild leader of one of the last standing OCE/SEA guilds in this game and also one of the highest DPS/Healing Bards. Publishers (GameForge) of this game are a let down, there is a disconnect of understanding between them and the players and also they do not appear to have an understanding of how to keep their own game alive and what is best for the game. BAD TRANSLATION - They did a poor job in translating the game, including skills and stats which leaves players confused on how to maximise/optimise each class, this is quite important due to end game raid content being extremely difficult (DPS checks, mechanic checks, enrage timers, etc). There is literally no guide or tutorial for so many things in this game that people have had to go and translate Chinese content (e.g. the card game, skill rotations, stat guides) and GAMEFORGE have not fixed or addressed any of it to this date. LACK OF CONTENT - The same content was released 4 times (4 different difficulty levels) from Launch until end of 2021, it was difficult to ask the players to re-do the same content over and over and over and over again, on 4 different difficulty modes with a weekly reset, leaving nothing much else to grind or to do during the week, any grinding you do doesn't really mean all that much because you could be doing TOP DPS and if 2 people in your party died then it's a wipe. PUNISHING PROGRESSION - No matter how good you are in this game you need an optimised/good static group in order to progress into the most difficult content, if 1-2 people die too early or miss a mechanic it means the entire party/raid wipes. There is no way for top/hardcore players to grind and carry the lower players, meaning this game is very limiting when it comes to trying to find a nice MMORPG to play with your friends/girlfriend who may not be an experienced player. Even if the lower skilled players spent time grinding this game, it would not help them progress with end game content, the elixirs and food do not make that much of a difference for survivability but rather just increase your total DPS by 5-10%. Enrage timers means that if a few people die, you have to wipe, there is no other choice. Without OCE/SEA servers it makes it even more difficult and punishing for progression. DIFFICULT PROGRESSION WITHOUT POPULATION/ACTIVE GUILD - The player base has become so low in this game that it would often take people 1-2 hours just to find a group for content (current to November 2021), even if you did find a group, content is so punishing that you would most likely fail, not due to your own skill but because of others. LIMITING CONTENT/CLASSES - This game already has 2 years worth of content out in China and TW servers, with this knowledge people are aware of the other classes and are waiting for them, this means that a lot of people find it completely useless to play this game at the moment because they will be investing their time for a class which they don't plan on playing long term. Lots of people have quit because they are just waiting on the new classes. The limiting content part is disappointing, there's so much more content accessible yet the publisher has decided to drip feed content and have repetitive (4x difficulties per raid) raids, the content has become so stale and it's boring to play, understandable if new content was under development but it is literally already available and in control of the developers. EXPENSIVE COSMETICS - Cosmetic clothing items in this game literally cost more than real life clothing, I'm not sure where GameForge was going with this but it portays them as money hungry and greedy, whereas the microtransations approach probably would have made them a lot more money. This game has SO MUCH potential if issues above are addressed correctly however the publisher just don't get it and the player base are aware of the lack of passion and care from Gameforge, if the games own publisher doesn't care, why would it's player base? The game = 9/10 (SO MUCH POTENTIAL) The publisher = 1/10 (Hasn't put in the effort and essentially killed the game) Three additional things (excluding everything I mentioned above) the publisher needs to do quickly if they want the game to survive: 1) Release all 3 new classes 2) Release 6 to 12 months more content 3) Make the game free to play to increase server population I hope this game survives.

The Good, The Bad, The Ugly review of Sword of Legends online A lovely looking atmospheric MMO with some wonderful gameplay systems that have been woefully localised with some of the worst translation work I have ever seen (or heard) wrapped inside an enjoyable game. Overview. A New MMO you say, well then slap me like its 2008 and lets jump on this bandwagon. Sword of Legends online is a rarity, a Chinese MMO exported to western shores while it is still relevant and modern feeling. The gameplay elements hold up well, the combat is smooth, The systems diverse and in a welcome change to many eastern MMOs the UI, while cluttered and overly detailed is not one you feel you are fighting against, it does however struggle under the sheer weight and volume of content it is trying to convey. There are as many flaws as there are gems in this game though so lets see if it is a roundhouse high kick, or a kick in the nuts!. The Good. The Graphics, the game is beautiful, especially if you enjoy the Eastern art style, if you watched films like House of Flying Daggers, Crouching Tiger, or if you thought the second half of Shang Chi was better than the first, then this is a game for you! Both at distance and close up the scenery looks smooth, the character animations are smooth, when running, double or triple jumping or gliding through the air the feeling of momentum and the yet light footedness that is commonplace in this sub genre is captured well. The Music, it is often said that good video game music is something you don't notice except by its absence, this is true here, while the music often fades to the background when not in combat, it does nothing but add to the aesthetics and ambience of the game. This is no Brian Adams at midnight in an 80's night disco abomination that pulls you out of your hazy trance and back into the realisation that you infact paid 20 quid to get inside a dimly lit warehouse with questionable drink and a bunch of people who are making good use of the smoke machine to present their best side.... The Combat, well paced especially for action combat which tends to either be a flurry of mad keyboard playing or a wait for cooldown's in many games, is enjoyable, the abilities are intuitive and you definitely feel like you are in a fight. Thankfully it stays away from a trope of many Eastern MMOs of relying on mass pulls and A.O.E. for every fight and the difficulty when soloing both in the world and in "Practice" instances feels tight but not unforgiving, just enough of a challenge to keep you going. Its not without flaws, which we will cover later, but its enjoyable enough and stands up well to its contemporaries in the east and west. A definite Enter the Dragon rather than a Dragon and on and on feel to the fights in this one. I hate the fact that the Genre has become so commercialised and designed by spreadsheets to pull money out of you wallet that it has come to this, but the cash shop deserves a mention. In a market place dominated by games that are designed to inconvenience you just enough to make you want to buy that boost to get around it, but not enough to drive you away, it is a welcome change to see a game whos monetisation is truthfully based entirely on cosmetics. Even the Battlepass is not an overly overt attempt to pray on peoples FOMO, a Pet peeve of mine is paying for content and them being told "You only get 90 days to "Earn" this". While not entirely getting away from this, it feels so unobtrusive that you could very easily miss it. Movement, the movement systems in this game are glorious, be it triple jumping and gliding to your goal, or sky surfing on the physical manifestation of a sentient sword spirit (Yeah, I didn't understand this either but its fun so who cares?) moving is a genuine pleasure in this game and flows well be it in combat or out. The Bad The localisation, it is quite frankly awful. Voice lines do not match up to the written text, quite often blatantly contradicting each other, or a line that was spoken by the same npc in the same quest just moments before. The voice acting its self is some of the worst I have ever heard in video gaming, while there is no doubting the effort, it is an example of what would happen if you ordered your voice acting from Wish, the lack of care in both the voice acting and translation is never more readily apparent then when you are reading a quest letter and the second half of the letter starts being read out 30 seconds before the first half is finished. Causing a torrent of bad voice acting that reminds me of when you are in a busy pub and two drunks are competing to tell a story, solely by attempting to talk over each other. Probably best to try and turn the voice acting off... if you can. The quest and story, unfortunately for all the good work in the environmental storytelling and incidental details, the actual story is a convoluted mess of tropes, cliches, and hastily introduced and then shelved ideas that make very little sense. By the time I reached level 21 I had stopped trying to keep track of who was on my side and who wasn't and instead just focused on enjoying the moment to moment story. It is one thing to try and layer 3-5 threats over each other, and another to introduce a villain in one scene only to have them 180 to secretly being on my side the whole time the next, and then have them disappear entirely from relevancy 3 quests later, the breakneck speed of story telling which never leaves any idea alone long enough for it to take root in your brain leads to a disconnect between the story being told and my ability to care about it what so ever. The Ugly. Lets get it out of the way, this is a game that has years of content releases in its native country, so the amount of systems here are staggering, that said, they are presented badly the tutorials that exist in the game do little to help you understand how the systems tie together, there is a LOT of rewarding content, but finding those rewards is often harder than the content its self. Feedback, while the combat is fun, feedback feels somewhat less than ideal, I know I can kill things, I know the combo to do it, but I rarely feel any kind of Weight behind any button press, I have no idea if what I did just hurt a lot or a little and while the flow of combat is enjoyable, the lack of tactile feedback makes it feel often times as weightless as a whale in space. The tutorial pop ups, the ones that exist, the same 5 or 6 pop ups keep popping up for the whole of the first 15 levels of the game, by the third time I have done it I know that pressing space after pressing space will let me double jump and pressing W then space lets me jump forward, no really, I got it... thanks uncle Game for reminding the 50th time, why don't you just sit down and have some cake and some Port, thanks. The guides.... my epic journey from quest giver to mob that is 30 yards away does not need both a GIANT MARKER on the screen AND A GIANT GLOWING DOTTED LINE TO GUIDE ME THERE, while again these get less intrusive as you advance in levels, they are condescending and immersion breaking in the extreme and, much like a fart in a space suit, linger around and keep offending your senses long after you wish they would just take their leave. Proof if ever it was needed that absence makes the heart grow fonder, because the longer I play without them, the less I hate them, its only when they come back that I am reminded of my distaste for them. Overall A flawed but enjoyable entry into the MMO market, held back less by its systems and game-play and more its localisation. With some hard work this could end up being a decent game Over all I would rate this game as a Heavy single malt peat whiskey, its a heady drink, harsh and strong, which takes some effort to get a taste for, and which most will bounce off hard. Expect to spend a lot of time googling if you REALLY want to enjoy this game.

Game died reaaallly quick. It was really cool when it came out because there was alot of people to play with to do the dungeons, raids, and daily/weekly quests. It just gets boring quick because you can only do the dungeons and raids once a week and then if you complete all the weeklys, you don't really have anything to do but wait till everything gets refreshed. Another thing that sucked was lets say a new dungeon came out today, everyone expected you to already know mechanics so it was hard to get into a raid to actually learn mechs; also it was hard finding any information on the mechanics online. Also people were really rude in the game, I saw so much name calling and people getting kicked left and right for no reason. I was just there to learn new mechanics and have fun but alot of people took the game so serious that no one wanted to teach others how to play and become good too. Oh well back to Elder Scrolls Online

    Dec 25, 2021

I've been playing this game since the start of the first beta, so I am very aware of how Sword of Legends Online managed to come this far. I never make serious reviews unless I care about the game and I also have over 1500+ hours in the span of 168 days, so I would consider myself as a “regular player”. At the very start, I randomly stumbled upon this game on steam and was unsure if I wanted to play another “Gameforge” game, as we all know their reputation and what things they are known for, but I really missed playing mmorpg’s, so I decided to give it a try and it looked promising during the betas. As of right now, the Gameforge employees speak highly about the game, but they do not realize the state the game is in, which is saddening, because the game that was developed by Wangyuan Shentang Entertainment, is one of the most refreshing and beautiful mmorpgs that have I encountered so far. Almost half a year later and the game is still full of bugs, bugs such as text, that is easy to fix, just by changing a line of text, but no. Not to mention, Gameforge doesn’t invest in advertising the game and is relying on the same very loyal players to gather more people. I am still shocked, how the game is still running. I remember when the game had 10000+ players online and was forced to create a second server, as it was not expected to be that popular. Now, the players online count is at 350 and the players from the second server are leaving their character to play on the first server, as it is very empty according to them. The game is the typical “look good on the outside, but ugly on the inside” and I would highly recommend you to look for another mmo and save your time from buying this game. You don’t have to grind for your whole life in order to achieve better gear, prestige or cosmetics such as titles, accolades. There are some things that may take more time, but there is no “extremely hard” grinding needed, which is nice, because that means you don’t have to play every single day. However, the missions (daily and weekly) are very repetitive and there is no big progress except you getting a few different currencies in the game. The game is behind compared to the chinese servers. The game was released about 4 years ago and we’re at the phase where it all started for the first time on the chinese server. This is fine with me, however, the content is not being pushed fast enough and as of right now, max obtainable gear score is approximately 105 which can be obtained rather quick, but once you are at this score, you are left with nothing, to do until next patch that may reach the game anywhere from 2 weeks to 2 months. The raids/dungeons are also very repetitive, the dungeons only unlock hard mode, which contains higher damage numbers and maybe 1-2 extra skills from the boss, but it is pretty much the same as the previous dungeon. So why not just do some PvP instead? Well, the PvP got its first update after 5 months? The whole PvP thing is not being favored, but little do they know, the ones that actively are pvping, are actually the ones that are the most loyal to the game and have brought multiple players to the game. TL:DR: PvP is dead - queue times minimum 30 min. per game. The bigger PvP events queue pops, if one of the few remaining guilds are queuing all together versus players that are playing alone and the result is that queue only to allow yourself to get farmed. The 3v3 event also could make use of some major changes, such as punishing players that stay afk or afk in the leaderboard, as in getting a lot of points and enough points to not play at all. We see these kinds of things in every game, but not in solo, and if it was supposed to happen, then Gameforge would have to inform the chinese devs and god knows how long we would have to see the light of a change. My heart goes to the players, they've tried really hard, but the longer it goes, the more obvious it is, especially when they are the ones that say: Well, if marketing doesn’t want to advertise, then we are not going to do anything about it. https://imgur.com/a/xZ0rTJF. The players deserve a better publisher and I hope they eventually see the truth and look somewhere else. Had I written this review before December, I probably would have left a Recommended review with some caveats. The support and moderators are also incompetent and seem to be very rude, especially on their discord server. but it is pointless as the moderators as well as the support are incompetent and sometimes I wonder how old some of these guys are, here is an example: https://imgur.com/a/yWxJ90n If you present a game/company, you should at least be able to take feedback and not say “I have been with the company many years, therefore you are wrong no matter what you say”. I think the person that started the conversation/report had a valid point, so I kinda disagree with how this moderator responded to this. There are more examples, if you skim through their discord. The game is not P2W at all, which is a nice plus and cash shop items are pretty expensive, but you are not forced to buy them. Many players are trading gold for items from the cash shop, so it is a very nice alternative or nice way to buy items that are usually impossible to get without having to swipe your card. I love the core game to death, it has just the right combat system and gives you the feeling of a nice chinese mmo. The graphics are wonderful, but slowed down by the havok engine (even newest graphic cards will not make the game look any better), minor bugs and the very poor localization. At times, you would have to guess in order to complete a certain mission. Frankly at this point I don't recommend playing the game. People tell you this game isn’t as bad as it is, but once you get in, you will realize how bad it is. I'm here to tell you that you should find a different game to play. If you play this game, you'll be playing just to get mad at a system being completely backwards and inconvenient, yet keep playing anyway because "maybe they'll fix it soon, they just fix X system last update, give them some time" and/or "if I don't play right now and get these stuffs I'll have to spend astronomical time for it later when it's not naturally obtainable anymore". If you really REALLY want to play the game, go ahead, but I wouldn't recommend investing too much of yourself into this game.

I can't believe I spent 30+ bucks on this. Terrible game, terrible localization. Now its Free to play, in a last ditch effort to save it. And the fact still remains... i paid $30+ on this trash...

The game is a feast for the senses... and then you try to play it. Reviewers have complained about heavy lag, boring endgame play, terrible English voice acting and other things; all of which are true. But what grabbed me very early on was that neither your character nor anyone you meet seems to have a soul. You're presented almost at the beginning with a bewildering amount of lore, but your character has no family, no backstory, no personal interests, no passions, no sense of humor, nada. It's all "Hey, I'm here." "Good, go do this." "I'm on it." Maybe all the humor and feeling disappeared in translation; who knows? The fact remains that your character will be a very beautiful piece of wood. The even bigger problem I encountered was this: I don't know what to do. There are a bazillion series of quest chains, side quests, tutorial quests, event quests; and no clue given as to what to do first because where is the storyline? So you try doing a little bit of everything, all at once. Naturally this slows your progress to a crawl, bad enough for having to slog through level after boring level of "Beginner" ranks before ever reaching "Student 1". I never managed it, myself. True, the game is not p2w. But it is p-2-do anything else. And there are multiple sets of currencies, only one of which can be earned by playing, and that currency isn't good for anything you'd actually want. There are also multiple tiers of Shop items, poorly organized, and lacking a simple filter to show me "What can I buy with what I have?". You can't even easily tell how much space is in your Inventory because it's comprised of several different kinds of containers, all of which have different capacities. Add to this a fairly toxic player base, especially the PvP e1337ists, a seeming inability to form a party because almost no one's on, and a lack of reparations for people who paid full price for what would become an f2p game; and all the stunning visuals and beautiful music in the world can't keep one around.

Whoever decided to charge a bunch of money pre-launch just to play the game (which is buggy, badly translated, and lacks engaging content) only to later turn it F2P is evil and should refund the money people like me paid just to play. Had we known it would be F2P so quickly after launch we wouldn't have spent money on the game just to play.

At this point I only see updates that include Cosmetics, pretty much all about money. No dungeons, no nothing. Gameforge should literally delete themselves, they've ruined every game they've touched.
