Protolife Возможности

15 years since the first colonization parties landed on Gagarin-5. 15 years of tedious yet satisfying work on making this planet our home. I miss these years now.

It all happened in mere days. The corruption spread across our lands, waves of crimson doom washed away our mushroom farms, and giant worms devoured our cities. As far as I know, only few thousands of people were able to escape into the emergency bases. Now the thing.. is dormant. It sleeps during the day, and grows only slowly over the night, filled with tumors, blights and rolling, nauseating pink lights.

This small opening seems to be our only chance to fight back, to clean the planet. And we are sure to take it.

Gameplay

Stand to defend a distant human colony against the growing lifeform that devours everything in its wake. Build complex defenses from the simplest element possible – a single block, save few remaining settlements and clean the planetary surface from the corruption in this original tower-based RTS. Initially built for a Ludum Dare 38 game jam, it was completely redesigned, got a graphics update, tons of new content, but still works around a simple idea: build towers from blocks, contain the enemy, survive the night onslaught and strike back.

Key features

  • Unique approach to building process: Every tower is constructed from patterns of simple blocks. Build your defense grid piece by piece the way you like it, upgrade, combine, optimize space and resources to survive against the overwhelming odds.

  • An enemy unlike usual RTS adversaries: Growing, living entity designed to exploit every small weakness in your defense. The more space it takes from you, the more powerful it becomes.

  • Freedom of strategy and flexible defense perimeter: Go for quick low-tier tower rush or bunk with well-defended artillery posts, then collect your blocks and rebuild the defenses on the spot — just mind the free space and resources left.

  • Direct control over the builder: Or two? Dynamically switch between several battlefronts and dominate over the enemy.

  • Over 30 levels with variative gameplay and win objectives.

  • Random missions generator with an adjustable difficulty level and special rewards.

  • Custom towers editor where you can construct your own powerful weapon.

  • Remappable keyboard or gamepad controls. Please note that the game was not designed for mouse control.

This is really clever and fun. Haven't even toyed with the experimentation phase much, but it was neat the one time I tried it. Cool concept. Well executed. Bug-free. How rare! All the negative reviews are from people who don't seem to like difficulty. "It was fun until it was hard for me to win." Go ask mom for a cookie, I guess. The controls are not 'clunky' you just have to count tiles. This game rewards precision, not panicked mashing. Well done, volcanic giraffe!

If tower defense games aren't normally your thing, you might still want to give this one a second look. This is a lot more hands on and real time, rather than just setting up your base then watching the game play itself. I also really appreciated the control scheme and UI. Rather than a bunch of menus and drop downs to select different weapon or equiptment types, you simple place blocks in a specified orientation with the use of the single button. Different orientations of blocks give you different weapons. It's got a great atmosphere too. Sound and music on point. A+ so far.

The basis of this game - tower configuration via building blocks runs like a clock. Available resources are usually limited, Protolife attacks from different directions, so you constantly need to dismantle and move towers around. This adds dynamics to game and such feeling, that you no so diffrenet from Protolife. Tower building is also based on combinations of blocks, so when you will unlock most of towers, you can quickly react to the situation and use the strongest weapon against the current enemy. Music and visuals create great atmosphere. You feel yourself on this planet and ready to defend your home. The only problems I could find is that sometimes your hands get tired if you are playing on keyboard and have a big and stressful level. And finish off the remaining pieces of Protolife, when the most of it was destroyed, is a bit boring. But this is a great game overall, so give it a try. And it definitely worth its money.

If you like interesting tower defense or creeper world style games, this game is for you. A little resource management and a whole lot of directed firepower makes for a fun time.

Tried to give the game a proper shot, but the controls for the game are very very poor. There is no point and click. The game works on a WASD grid/cell movement system which is very annoying to play with. I was struggling more with the controls than the game. Even with a Controller it still seems a bit off.

I don't write reviews often but after turning off my computer, I found myself unable to sleep having laid in bed for 2 hours thinking about my experience with the game. So I figured I'd sit up and write down my feelings, so that maybe I'd be able to put my mind at ease and get some shut eye. As there is only a yes or no rating, I will hesitantly give a thumbs up for now. Game mechanics wise the product is sound. Unlike most Tower defence games where you place your stuff in predesignated slots, you must build your defences up block by block. This gives a feeling of personal touch as you watch the creep smash into your custom built fort, and then seeing the base you built with your own two hands beat off a wave, definitely has a greater level of satisfaction. My problem with the game is the early levels are a trap. While you will breeze through the first missions the game quickly descends into Hell itself. I consider myself very skilled and gaming smart, and some later missions had me questioning if the levels were actually designed for professional esports players. BIG WARNING: This game is not for casuals. [strike] Later missions demand the highest rpm, with scenarios typically giving you only 30-45 seconds to setup defences from as many as 3+ different directions before a cluster **** of uncountable bugs mercilessly swarms the map. It got to the point where I found myself having to restart before the first wave, if I was not able get a build down to cover a side off within X seconds. The short amount of time for counterattacks is too strict and often calls for pinpoint execution, where pressure of failure causes an unnecessary amount of stress and frustration. Having hit a dead wall in one of the last 10 missions (Looking at you Karst Layer) is when I stopped playing. I felt as though it truly wasn't a case of "I need to get better," than the game just being unfair. [/strike] If your hungry for a challenge and consider yourself good enough I recommend this game. [strike] However for everyone else I feel you should skip unless the game gets patched to be easier (only one difficulty setting.) I can honestly see people paying the game's asking price then getting stuck 2-3 hours in, getting pissed off and never playing again. Definitely not the $ per hour value if you don't have mental to keep trying. [/strike] [b]Added an edit since I came back to try this game out, added a strike through to show what I had originally said though for clarity.[/b] TL:DR: Hard as a rock difficulty. -> Other reviews didn't like the controls, I don't mind it. Can imagine what the game would be like with point and click mouse but would need a complete redesign. Haven't played Creeper World. EDIT 10/08/20: Wow, looked at my reviews and realised this is probably my most up-voted one. Took the time to reinstall and check out what's changed. Karst Layer was patched as of 1.0.7 and new game+, random campaign missions and custom maps / designs added. Still a very challenging game but worth every bit of money. Great fun.

The campaign is too short and there's no replayability at all. Trailer is misleading: maps in the game are no bigger than the screen and enemies never behave like that (they always just rush to your base).

RTS + TD + Lego blocks = mayhem! TLDR; Good take on TD... I like different formula to keep the genre fresh! Game teaches you to build different towers with 2 kinds of blocks (normal blue & rare gold). There are 2 timers: 1st is how long enemies are asleep, and 2nd is how long enemies are now awake, ie. fortify and cross your block-y fingers. It only uses the keyboard, but it's still as intense in battles. Good thing is to press 'Tab' to see different block-formations, ie. towers, and to maybe catch your breath. Took me a while to memorise the towers. But I still forget some formations during battles, and make a whole incoherent mess... time to restart! 6/10 Keep it up!

Cool concept, great art, but lacking in content, will revisit once there's some more meat.

so much wasted potential so much refunded great game really but its nothing more than a campaign just long enough to be beyond the 2 hours refund time on steam and that seems to be it the ai is as dumb as they come with specific paths ignoring everything with no settings to fix that easily making it aggress anything near its path but it dont maps are small and quick to go through if you are even mediocre dont believe those who says whatever map is hard i may have a quick learning ability but even with the lackluster controls it still felt unsatisfying when there is nothing to look forward to like workshop maps or mods also no mods or modes no multiplayer no nothing at all just a 3-5 hours campaign/storything/map chain with a interesting building mechanic kept back by the control design(would been a service to themself to have mousecontrol in mind at the drawing board) against a retarded ai with small maps barely bigger that your screen and no replayability
