Every now and then there's a game that changes the way you look at all types of games in the same genre. Take Witcher 3 for example, good RPGs are now bad because we now know that is possible to do better, MUCH better. For many of you this game will fly under your radar, many of you might even ended up here by mistake. Whatever the reason i don't care just BUY this game. This is a masterpiece, this is the Witcher 3 of metroidvania 2D plataformers. The story is beyond good, is beautiful, it'll break your heart and make you smile, it wont bore you and it has enough to keep you engaged. The MUSIC? The music in this game has life, it tells a story in it self, without a word you can understand the world around you, it whispers in your ear, never yells, it tells you a secret for you to keep. The art style is stuff of dreams, the color palette is vybrant but also dull when it needs to be. The hand drawn vistas and landscapes are worth the games price, just so you can bathe in how good this games looks. The controls are just good, and they have to be, because this game is HARD, it rewards acuracy and quick reflexes, have you got those? I died 422 times on my first playthrough and let me tell you, i'd die 422 more just hoping this game would be bigger This IS the 2D plataformer to beat, this is more than a game is an EXPERIENCE EDIT: Replayed it with my best friend, still as good, still as heatwarming still as awesome

Full Review -- Curator Site I’ve tried to start this review a few times, and the fact is I haven’t come up with an opening line. I’m looking at Ori and the Blind Forest today and the fact is, I don’t know if I have the words that are properly worthy of the game. Ori and the Blind Forest is just an amazing game, and worthy of praise, probably far more praise than it’s received. I’m going to try to do it justice. So I heard about how gorgeous Ori and the Blind Forest was. I’ve heard similar words on other games like Owlboy and didn’t like it that much. At the same time, I’ve seen pictures of Ori and I was curious about it. I’m not a huge fan of graphics though, as I feel a lot of times graphics allows games to ignore gameplay. However, when a game is great, graphics can enhance it. If you look at The Witcher 3, it’s a great game, but the graphics in it are fantastic and really add to the experience. But how great can graphics be in a 2D platformer? I feel there is a limitation to the graphics accomplishments to the point where they can fall into an over-engineered category pretty quickly. Less than five minutes into Ori I understood the graphical hype, I was blown away by the graphics. The opening is very cinematic and well crafted. Ori is a child or a pet of Naru, a strange character who lives in the forest. We see quickly their lives together and what happens to them. This entire prologue section is just a visual feast. It’s wordless and yet it shows time passing, emotion, and character growth. It’s incredible and just looks amazing while doing it. In fact, the game looks so good, I played half of my 15 hours with the game at 1280×720 resolution. I didn’t even realize I was playing the game at less than 1080p, because the game’s graphics are that solid. I then switched it to the proper resolution and was impressed yet again. I can’t even explain how good this game looks especially in motion. Sadly I believe those techniques don’t translate well to screenshots, so I didn’t get many screenshots while moving but the game is impressive in the visual department. So while that opening is very impactful, it’s one of the only points in the game to really have a strong focus on the story. The rest of the game steps back and develops into a Metroidvania style game. Which means you run around and get items that unlock new areas of the world and allow you to explore more, as well as backtracking and getting items a second time. There is an ethereal voice similar to Bastion that delivers minor exposition as the “Spirit Tree”. Where Bastion was heavy with its dialog, Ori and the Blind Forest rarely uses the effect, but when it does appear it’s executed perfectly to drive the story in a minimalist narrative. There is also the character of Sein, who is played similar to Navi from Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time. Sein is a disembodied spirit who guides Ori through the game and helps him and the player know what to tackle next. The narrative though does appear during some levels and tells a little more of the story as the game plays, and it’s always done well in the main game, but after playing the whole game it never rose to the level of the opening segment. Instead, it gave mere flashes of brilliance versus a solid narrative. Yet, the look and feel of the delivery of the story is amazing. Even the villain looks unbelievably good every time they are on the screen. He’s on the screen enough, but I wanted to see more of him because he’s so vibrant. The experience of the story makes me love the game because while it’s not always the cleanest in its storytelling, it’s gorgeous as it does it, and is done with such style. If the story is that good, the question is, does the gameplay rise to the same level. Well that question evolves into what type of game the player wants, Ori and the Blind Forest is a platformer, but it’s also one of the harder platformers I’ve seen in recent years. I played through the Definitive Edition, which I’ll touch on later, but I played on the normal difficulty which should be equal to the original game. I died a lot. The final total was something over 500 deaths, and while some of them were silly, and a few of them were because of poor play, there is a lot of challenge here. I’ve said before that I hate the “Dark Souls” comparison because hard games have been here long before Dark Souls. But it tends to be more towards that difficulty than Limbo or Braid. At the same time, I gave up on Hollow Knight, whereas with Ori and the Blind Forest, I could never put it down, and part of that is due to the style of failure in Ori and the Blind Forest. I never died because a challenge was too hard, or required too much memorization. Instead, the game always had a fair challenge and I constantly was required to build my skill up to the reasonable level the game demanded. There is another important distinction between Ori and the Blind Forest, and other difficult games. Ori has a unique way to allow you to change the difficulty. You’re giving the ability to create save points in the game, and they persist. From there you can move forward and when you die you will always return to that save point. This costs energy which the game gives away often, but never enough that you can save after every challenge. The energy is used for special attacks and save points, so the player has to decide if he wants to save or wants to use a solid (but not overpowered) attack. However, you can always return to a save point to save a second time if you desire. This system can allow players to create no-win situations, but the game doesn’t allow the player to save in “Unstable” areas, or when near a monster so it is difficult to get into a horrible situation. Maybe not impossible, but definitely harder than a save anywhere system. Most of my deaths were caused because I forgot about the Save system, and would play for five to ten minutes to lose and realize I hadn’t saved, and then have to tackle the same hard challenges. However, I could have used the save system a lot more and made the game a little easier. There’d still be the hard challenges I had to overcome, but I wouldn’t have had to tackle them nearly as many times. The level design in Ori and the Blind Forest is as solid as the rest of the game. While there is a lot of challenge and difficulty in the game, the dangers are almost always clearly stated, and there’s a good variety to the areas of the world. There are quite a few areas in the game, with three major sections of the game played on the main map each leading to a dungeon for the player to trek through. My personal favorite was probably the second section which took us through the amazing Misty Woods which had a constantly evolving level, requiring the player to backtrack and find new locations multiple times, this was followed by the Forlorn Ruins, which was gorgeous but had some interesting mechanics, that I’ll avoid spoiling here. Every level was something new and different and I wanted to see what was coming next. However, each dungeon ended with a rather long “escape” section. These were all interesting but they probably are the hardest part of the game, usually requiring a near perfect run for about five minutes. Most of the traps for these runs are unknown so you’re likely going to die a few times just to learn the level. I'm not a platformer fan but this is something else.. Ori and the Blind Forest is what you call a masterpiece. Every essential aspect of this game is perfect or at least close to that. ● The story may put you on the emotional rollercoaster as it has both sad and happy moments. Its writing and pacing along with great narration in a fictional language was astonishing. ● Gameplay was quite challenging, but that's what makes it better. Throughout the game you're being introduced to new abilities and features of the game which later on you have to use simultaneously in order to complete a portion of the map. The game let's you discover hidden areas at any time and unlock new skills by spending ability points. Some of those skills are needed to reach those secret places. Also beware, there is no auto-saving so you always have to create a soul link by holding "E" by default in order to save your progress. These soul links also cost you energy so you can't save after every step. Save them as you'll die a lot. ● Smooth animations, bright and saturated colors combined with beautiful artwork greatly improved the atmosphere. Although, in some cases all those lights and sparkles got in the way and screwed me over but they're too pretty so I can't hate on them too much. ● Music is my favorite thing in this game. It pushed me towards getting this game in the first place. Just look at the trailer and listen to that godly soundtrack! It's uplifting, soothing and tense exactly when it should be. Could say the same about sound effects too. Picking up orbs and shooting light rays never was so satisfying.

In conclusion, this game is amazing and worth paying full price. A must-buy on sale!

    10/10

Also, by buying the definitive edition you receive a free copy of the original game which has trading cards.

I just finished my fist playthrough of this game, and I think it's become my favorite ever. I generally play action RPGs or just RPGs (souls series, witcher, elder scrolls, fallout etc.) and I've found some phenominal titles. But I've felt that every game I played up until now has been lacking something, for example, The Witcher 3's story and quests are fantastic, but the combat is sometimes clunky. The mechanics of the souls games are great, but you have to go out of your way and do research to figure out the story, which I've done, and still the stories haven't really grabbed me. Ori and the Blind Forest is as close to a perfect game as I have ever played. It has some really unique mechanics that all work beautifully, the story is bittersweet and wonderful, the music and artstyle are perfect for the game and its environments. In summary, this game is a work of art. I had one problem during the entirety of my 11 hour playthrough, which went through almost 100 percent of the map: I got stuck under a rock and had to quit out. That's it, that's the only thing approaching a glitch or a mistake I found. If this game is on sale, it's criminal not to buy it. If it's not on sale, it's still criminal not to buy it. This is the first game I've written a review for, because these developers deserve more attention for this masterpiece.

This might be my first review i've ever done and i don't even care that nobody will ever get to see it under all the other ones. I just had have to recommend it. There are more indepth reviews on here, but all there is to say about this game is, it's a masterpiece. There are so many reasons to play and like this game, from the amazing sound design, music, artwork, level design, likeable characters, great story. And this is just the things around the game, not the gameplay itself, wich, who would've guess, is also pretty neat, with it's rewarding skillcourve, constant new fun abilities and tight controls. The difficulty can spike at times and i can see some people not enjoing it as much even with the option of easy mode, but this is a game where im honestly kinda bummed i got it with 50% off, since i'd rather have the developers get the money, so they know we as the consumers want games like these to continue being made. You know i could go into more detail for every single point i made and pick favourite usages, but like i said, there's no reason for me to do it this late into the other, way more detailed and easier to read reviews to i'll just stay put. This game is amazing and got itself a spot in my favourite games of all times within the first hour into the game.

    TL;DR

Some games are magical – you play them, and they leave their mark on you in the form of a dreamlike reminiscence. Ori and the Blind Forest is one of these enchanting games you will remember.

    Full Review

If you have read my previous reviews, you already know I absolutely love Hollow Knight and consider it the best Metroidvania ever made. Ori and the Blind Forest is the closest contender, although they shine a little bit differently. Ori does not include such a versatile combat system and a large variety of enemies. Unlike the epic journey of Hollow Knight, it is a chamber experience with a tender story made as a platforming adventure more than anything else. With this obvious comparison out of the way, let’s focus on Ori. The game has a gorgeous art style, an exquisite orchestral score, and a fairytale plot focused on the eternal theme of love, devotion, and fear of losing your dearest ones. It begins bittersweet. Before you know it, you are tricked into playing to the end. You play as a forest’s guardian spirit named Ori that looks like a cat-like bunny (or bunny-like cat?!), and you are on a mission to save the unique Nibel forest from withering. Assisting you is a living orb entity called Sein. They are not only your counselor but also the only weapon you will have throughout the game (not counting a particular way of countering enemy projectiles.) Sadly, there is no co-op in Ori like there is in Child of Light because Ori and Sein function as a single character despite the narrative telling you otherwise. Combat is supplemental here. The main challenge hides behind sections of heavy platforming with spatial puzzles. There are many places where you have to figure out some unusual way to move by using enemies and their projectiles to maintain your kinetic energy. This means the combat is not only unnecessary but even unwanted at times. Some sections require precise timing, some – figuring out how to make it through, and some others – elaborate use of surroundings to combine timing with some particular set of prerequisites. Mobs are strong enough to pose a constant threat, so moving around them and manipulating them into positions without fighting might be a tough challenge in itself. Moreover, Ori and the Blind Forest involves a maze-like world to roam with many hidden areas and secrets to obtain that can be revealed after certain power-ups. If you like this prominent feature of the Metroidvania genre, you will surely enjoy exploring the map. If you are looking for an outstanding game to occupy you for 25 hours with the carefully crafted world and platforming puzzles, look no further. Ori and the Blind Forest is an easy choice to make! I have not played Ori and the Will of the Wisps yet, although gameplay-wise and graphics-wise, the games should be similar, so there is no point in buying the sequel before you would play this one.
