About the Game

One of these days you finally decide to take out the box with old CDs, mostly old games, covered with 10-year old dust. But you can't outstand the desire to look through all of them and prepare yourself for an hour full of nostalgia.

While browsing them, one of the PC games you found there attracts your attention. You don’t remember this game being here. You neither remember buying or playing it.

It seems really old, something from the early '00s. The title says “No one lives under the lighthouse”.

The game description on the backside of the box seems to be poorly translated from some other language:

"You arrive at the old lighthouse on a small island near the coast of the United States. After the previous keeper has gone missing, you need to take over his duties and watch after the light. The member of the Establishment told you they'll get you an assistant after a week or two, but right now you're on your own.

Featuring:

  • Island exploration

  • Enjoy the loneliness and ultra-modern graphics

  • Look after the lighthouse, light the lamp at the sunset

  • Listen what seagulls speak to you

  • No words said

  • Don't open the door that leads to the basement under the lighthouse

  • No one lives under the lighthouse

This sounds weird and disturbing. Game screenshots on the box look a bit uncanny. If this game wasn't so old you've probably decided it's another pretentious walking sim with horror elements.

You need to check it. The box with other CDs stays in the corridor. You spent at least an hour looking for your old laptop, as your current PC doesn't even have the CD port.

Install wizard completes and closes automatically in less than a minute. A text document named "Instructions.txt" opens immediately after that.

Instructions.txt:

  • The keeper is responsible for the care and management of the light, and for the station in general.

  • The keeper is responsible for the careful management and expenditure of stores and supplies.

  • A lighthouse must never be left wholly unattended.

  • Keepers must be courteous and polite to all visitors who conform to the regulations.

  • The lighthouse basement should be locked up tight and not visited not by the keeper, nor anyone else.

  • Lights must be lighted punctually at sunset and must be kept burning at full intensity until sunrise.

  • All preparations must be made early, that there may be no delay in lightning.

  • The lens and the glass of the lantern must be cleaned daily and always kept in the best possible condition.

  • The keeper and his assistance, if he has any, should live in a house near the lighthouse. No one lives under the lighthouse.

"This doesn't sound like proper instructions for a PC game", you think. So you don't bother closing the document and finally launch the game .exe file.

What could go wrong?

Game features:

  • From 1 to 2 hours of playtime for single walkthrough

  • A slow burn low-jumpscare-rated horror mystery with multiple interpretations

  • Retro aesthetics

  • 3 endings

  • Achievements

  • Full controller support

Director's cut:

Director's cut (also known previously as Isolated Year Update) introduces a remake of most of the late-game content, completely changing the 2nd hour of the game and also adding some new things to the earlier part of the game. Also all of game's endings were remade and some of them became much harder to achieve than the others. Also, many achievements were remade according to the new content.

A short but intriguing venture reminiscent of old PS1 horror games. I've been holding off on buying games recently as my back catalogue is far too vast to justify buying just any old game but this title caught my interest solely based on the graphical theme it uses. Reminiscent of old Resident Evil and Silent Hill games on the original PlayStation console. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2072401308 With expectations set rather low upon launching the game and seeing the Unity logo pop up and the fact I couldn't reconfigure my keybinds (as limited as they may be, I would like to set them to my preference), I was pleasantly surprised by the effort that's went into No one lives under the lighthouse. The opening scene gave a sense of eeriness and unsettling which is hard to capture in this day and age. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2072401498 The gameplay consists of completing simplistic puzzles and being made unnerved by small but infrequent jump scares and the occasional monster chase. All of which are well made and fitting to the games unique theme and accompanied by a terrific soundtrack. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2072401613 Overall, No one lives under the lighthouse captures the essence of old school horror perfectly in my opinion and with various alternative endings and secrets, it's something I'm definitely going to play through again.

PS1 styled, short, but very, very well made cosmic horror game taking a stab at channeling Lovecraft and succeeding admirably with just one minor hitch. A simple premise, you're a lighthouse keeper on an almost barren, remote island somewhere off the coast of US and your job is to keep the light alive. The first half of the game is incredibly well made. The details are astounding. When you step foot on the island, dread slowly begins creeping in. The atmosphere, the gloom, the grind of the sand beneath your feet, the howling of the wind, the screeches of sea gulls, the creaking and slamming of doors in that howling silence surrounding you and the complete feeling of desolation around you are so impeccably done that I had chills going for the entire first part of the game. For the most part, it's pretty obvious what the game wants from you and it shows you with cutscenes and zoom ins on important things. When you get near something you can pick up, a white highlight appears around the item. Some items can only be picked up on certain days when you need to use them. Overall, it's intuitive and I was never stuck in the first part. Now comes the hitch. The second part of the game involves a maze and due to visuals it's a bit hard to orient yourself and figure out what you need to do. It took me around 20 minutes to figure out how and where to go to proceed. It's slightly confusing, but it doesn't break the flow of dread the game has going from the start. The final part can only be described as cosmic since it feels like the imaginary, lost city of R'lyeh or at least an incarnation of it dreamt up by Sowoke Entertainment Bureau after a few sleepless nights working on the immense dread of the first part of the game and getting visited by a shoggoth. I can not state enough how dread inducing the first part of the game is. It so gradually increases the tension and your chills with it that it almost becomes slightly unbearable at one point. "I have seen the dark universe yawning, Where the black planets roll without aim, Where they roll in their horror unheeded, Without knowledge, or lustre, or name.” It's a very atmospheric, experimental horror game well worth your time for the price it's asking. P.S. Read the About this Game on the store page. It's worth a minute of your attention. Take a peek inside the newly opened Cabinet of Curiosities if you like to walk off the beaten path and only sometimes return to the main roads. You might find something worth exploring. And if you do, thank you for the visit. Follow the Average Achievement Hunter Curator for reviews and useful information on Steam achievements: A slight annoyance for achievement hunters. There are 2 achievements for not dying during certain sequences and if you die, reloading a checkpoint or reset level as it says in-game does not get you the achievement. It seems you need to start a new game from the beginning. I ended the first playthrough with 13/23 achievements. The game has multiple endings depending on things you do in your playthrough and lots of missables. But, it's short and easily replayable and there's a good guide on Steam for getting all the achievements.

[insert The Lighthouse (2019) quote here, haha hehe] I would recommend obtaining and playing the non-Director's Cut version of this game. It was short, effective and impactful. The game made you spend boring, slow time, before breaking it up with a few spicy scary scenes, before launching you off to an imperfect yet solid Lovecraftian ramp. There was buildup and a proper payoff. The cryptic story made sense in whatever ending you got, explaining enough but leaving aside the stuff that honestly does not matter in a game like this. The original version was very solid, and to repeat myself, definitely one that merited one or a few playthroughs. Then came the Director's Cut. I don't know what prompted the devs to make the changes that went into the DC in-betwen its release and the completion of the original version. However, the spirit of these changes is actually well conveyed by the new store image for the game. The original showed the lighthouse, dark, set against a dark sky and completely tinted dark blue. The new image shows a seagull and a barely visible lighthouse, spoils what the big scary monster looks like for some reason, and is tinted sepia. In a similar way, whereas the original version of the game was a compact horror experience with a slow buildup and tense finales, the Director's Cut stretches the slow buildup through the entire game, even after we've flown off the ramp. This results in an incredibly tedious experience where the game simply doesn't want to end but drags on, and on, and on, and on. Everything that was subtle in the later parts of the original version is thrown out of the window for story elements such as flashbacks which absolutely make no sense and try to inflate every part of the story that precisely did not matter to the experience of the original. Instead of a tense and almost nightmarish chase sequence in a small, dark underground maze, there's now a sequence where you need to navigate a very complex, bright labyrinth while being chased by the stinky monster which you can see clearly, and to which you're probably going to die a lot. This is an incredibly amateurish mistake and I can't figure out why something like this would be inserted into a game that had wisely avoided it. Even worse, whereas the original game let you find and use a gun in one sequence in a way that made sense, in one of the updated ending paths you have to play through a full OBJECTIVE: KILL THE MOTHER FUCKER sequence and fight the spooky monster using a shotgun. The monster itself, in turn, etamorphosed from a bizarre, creepy mothman-thing (and other, somehow less easily describable things) to some ridiculous amalgam that looks like the Bat/Rat/Spider monster from The Angry Red Planet (1959). The incredible convolution of the story is another curious. Perhaps because of the endless comparisons and references made to 2019's The Lighthouse since the game's release, the devs felt that they needed to go big. If that was the case, they went beyond big and landed straight into bloat territory. Not only there is bloat, but at the end of incessant jumps back and forth between sequences where nothing happens and more "action-y" sequences, you're left with absolutely nothing. Incredibly enough, the story is now pretentious and cryptic, where it was adequately cryptic and properly Lovecraftian before. What a shame. Previous quality disappeared.
