  Most people don't get excited by the sight of tiny trains running to-and-fro on neatly organised lines. For the extreme niche who do, there's NIMBY Rails. And it's an amazing casual time sink with just enough complexity to make it interesting. Open-source map data has given us everything from the sprawling beauty of Flight Simulator 2020 to the gritty realism of 112 Operator. With NIMBY Rails, the developer has taken population and map data for the [i]entire planet Earth[/i] and put a transport simulator on top. So, no matter the shortfalls of your local public transport system, in NIMBY Rails you can reshape it to your heart's content on [i]your[/i] roads and in [i]your[/i] cities. I've always thought there should be a tram line near my house - well, with NIMBY Rails, I can build it, and run it, and show it would be pretty successful. And while the graphics are just simple vectors and shading - you can't even see the trains unless you zoom right in - there is a peculiar thrill to watching your high-speed intercity express rocket through landscapes you can instantly visualise in your mind's eye. (In that way the graphics are better than real-life!) I'm most impressed by how NIMBY Rails finds its niche perfectly. It's not as abstract as Mini Metro, nor as micro-managey as, say, OpenTTD (although those are both excellent games). The interesting stuff - building stations, laying track, picking models of train, and setting prices - is all included. The fluff and tedium is stripped out. A few other reviewers have criticised the interface, but I can only assume the latest versions have fixed this. Drawing stations and tracks is really straightforward, as is placing lines and buying trains. The scheduling system is a bit of an eyesore unfortunately, although the game will happily let you ignore this and schedule trains automatically so it's not a huge issue if you ignore it. The only downside that you will have trains running 24/7 - it would be nice to have a simple "trains run from 0700-2300" slider instead of managing the timetables individually. Hopefully the dev will continue to improve the UI for scheduling. Likewise, if you want to create elaborate signalling networks, you can, but the game lets you ignore it if you don't want and you'll just suffer some financial and efficiency penalties on your network. Or, when building rail, you occasionally have to decide on whether you want a bridge or a tunnel, or if you want to go around the obstacle, which is an interesting choice as it gives you financial and geographical constraints. But, unlike some games, you don't have to spend hours crafting intersections and sculpting terrain - the game works with you in good faith, so you aren't struggling for hours to get a curve over a river pixel-perfect like other building sims. You can play NIMBY Rails on your own terms, in other words. Which is good, because there's no real objectives in this sandbox - just the quiet joy of imagining a world where the trains are all fast, clean and run on time.

  you don't realize it until you play it for yourself but this game is RIDICULOUSLY engrossing. theres a lot of value to be had here; you can make literally anything rail related. if you, like me, are upset at your city/state/country's rail transportation, then this game is absolutely for you. if you're not, it's still for you. you WILL be upset at your city/state/country's rail transportation after a few hours playing. buy this game

  TLDR: A niche game for a specific audience. Game is unpolished in its current state, but recommended because there are no other options on the market. NIMBY Rails allows players to design passenger railroads to their hearts content. However, the game is plagued by some major flaws. First of all, it lacks graphics. The entire download is compromised of 25GB worth of offline map data. Whites are roads; blues are waters; greens are parks. If you have never boarded TGV trains, they will appear to you as plain colored arrows. If you have never been to Tokyo, the roads will look identical to those in Ho Chi Min City. Either the player needs to fantasize everything, or he needs to know the scenery with great details. And sometimes, he needs both. This brings us to the second problem. Although the game map consists of the entire world, for players without much imagination, he is limited to very few options. The third major issue, NIMBY Rails boasts horrendous UI. Youtube videos are a must have to understand the current scheduling interface. The button to toggle double and single track is located in a place as unintuitive as you could have imagined. If you want to make triple tracks, you are out of luck. There are a lot more QOL improvements to be made, especially since the game is in early access. Finally, the AI. Go to the discussion page, and you can read how bad it is for yourself. The only reason I "painfully" recommended this game is for its realistic simulation of rail transport, where major titles like TPF2 fails. A railway station that is 300 meters is at long last not the entire length of a city. A high speed rail finally does not need to cross one half of the map to reach top speed. The amount of realism in NIMBY Rails is heads and shoulders above all other tycoon games. I would NOT suggest buying NIMBY Rails, as it is not for most people. (Instead, TPF2 is a more well-rounded product.) However, once you have experienced enough games in this genre, you will inevitably know whether NIMBY Rails has become a must purchase to fill a hole in your heart.
