"You have 8 men, now please conquer this entire town full of enemies." -Easy mode Hardcore strategy with the feel of an action game, plus you can do that cool thing where you can take control of a unit personally. If you were disappointed by Company of Heroes 2 or just want a difficult WWII RTS then this is for you.

UPDATE: I'm currently going through a second play-through of this game. Literally the hardest and most frustrating strategy game I have ever played, but I still love it. I see a lot of negative reviews for this game, but if you love Men of War, then you'll love this. Each mission will take you between an hour to three hours to beat. REMEMBER: Save the game as often as you can! You will be redoing many parts of every mission many times! And if you're giving this game a negative review because it is too difficult, then you're not a real Men of War fan. It is actually enjoyable for me that this game is extremely tough.
For The Motherland!
Men of War: Red Tide (MoW: RT) is about stories and campaigns done by an elite group of Soviet soldiers known as ‘Black Coats’. Such events took place during World War II, and you’ll have engagements at Odessa, Sevastopol, Theodosia, and other historic locations. As you encounter the enemy on multiple fronts, players will have a surplus of weaponry, vehicles, aircraft, and self-propelled guns as you fight in an RTS environment.
+Pros+
+A sense of realism +Historical battles +Challenging
-Cons-
-Wonky controls -Spec Ops Bugs (sneaky, sneaky!)
No Retreat!
The campaigns that are displayed in this game are depicted in a theater of war. An example would be Odessa, and how the Soviet forces took back the city from Romanian troops as they attacked in the middle of the night in an amphibious assault. The mission then would continue by taking over the outlying village until finally retaking Odessa itself. There will be times within a mission when a cutscene happens and multiple soldiers will speak to one another. This helps keeping the game realistic, as some of the officers and admirals that are used in the scenario are based on their real-life counterparts. Unlike its predecessor, where you fought as Germans, Allies, and the Soviets; in this title, you’ll only be playing the USSR and the soldiers who helped turn the tide.
Here’s a shovel, Comrade!
A few new items have been added to this game. Your comrades will be equipped with weapons such as the flamethrower. Just as in the predecessor, you’ll be able to use everything that is on the battlefield: self-propelled guns, tanks, anti-aircraft, multiple projectiles such as grenades, and boats. Certain missions will grant you off-the-map artillery support and/or air support. Combat is quite simple, yet challenging. You are given a small number of soldiers – sometimes you get reinforcements, and other times that is all you get. Hiding behind trees, rocks, blown-up debris such as tanks, buildings, or even sandbags can make a difference if your men will die or not. Finding openings in their defensive line, flanking them, and using any weakness they have is the only assurance to victory. When rushing the enemy blindly, the result will be a failure. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2816893452 Running low on ammo or medkits? Scavenge from the dead. Did they abandon their tank because the tracks fell off? Find a repair kit either in the tank or on the dead crewman and repair it yourself! Now, you have yourself a tank! Can’t move this anti-tank battery? Good thing that truck behind the bushes is operational! Because you are limited on the soldiers you get in MoW: RT, you’ll need to utilize all the possibilities. One of the best features that even modern RTS games fail to achieve is consistency. Why, you ask? Because a dead soldier doesn’t magically disappear, like a rainbow when you’re trying to find a pot of gold. Their bodies, weaponry, blown-up debris, and everything war-related tends to stay on the battlefield. I enjoy this aspect because it brings realism to a new level.
Get behind cover!
The audio sounds good for an outdated game, machine guns sound like you’d expect them to, and having a rocket land near your men is terrifyingly close to a real explosion. The graphics are a bit outdated, which is fine since the gameplay is the main factor of the game. The equipment and corpses are all persistent, so you can take your time to cherish the ruins and landscape while engaged in battles. I didn't experience any lag, crashes, or frame drops. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2816893392
The Intel was wrong!
At times, when commanding your soldiers to move, you’ll run into pathfinding issues where your men are confused as to how to obey that order. As an example, I’ll station a squad of men behind cover (cover shows multiple silhouettes before movement), and then if the men don’t care to listen, they will stand in the open and get shot down like a bag of disappointment. It doesn’t happen often, but it does make a difference if you’re on a mission with limited comrades and weaponry. The AI can be wonky at times, by charging their men into your line of fire or your allies deciding the meat grinder is a better option than life. In one of the first missions, you'll see your allies being slaughtered like chickens in a hen house as they run towards the stationary guns and enemy tanks.
Comrade’s Gear
OS: Windows 10 CPU: i9-10900k GPU: GeForce RTX 3070Ti Ram: 32GB Storage: Evo 870 4TB (SSD) https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2816891335
When the Red Tide washes ashore
I enjoyed the realistic aspects of this title. The graphics and audio aren’t anything to write home about, but they do keep up with modern times including the settings. I found this title to be higher in difficulty than the previous title (Men of War) but less so than MoW: Condemned Heroes. It’s a middle ground, but a good one at that. I would have enjoyed playing other factions such as Allies and Germany from the last game, but I do not regret just playing as the Soviets. It was a pleasant experience, if you’re into RTS games with a sense of realism then you should give the MoW series a try!

Men of War: Red Tide is a strategy game developed by Digitalmindsoft and published by 1C Company. This game was released in November 2009 and is a sequel to Men of War. It is set in World War II and features a campaign that recounts history of the Soviet Union and its battles through a 20 mission campaign. I personally really enjoyed its predecessor Men of War, but this game is terrible. Furthermore, I wanted to like this game, but I quit after 90 minutes and on the second mission and uninstalled it after giving up. I want to shed some thoughts on why I think its bad because their are many individuals that enjoy this game. Therefore, this review will discuss the positives and negatives of this game. I am familiar with the gameplay and overall feel of the game due to playing Men of War, which is very similiar. You command your squad and you order them to attack in order for you to complete your objectives. This game is realistic because for instance, tanks destroy infantry, infantry can kill in one shot, and infantry must use tactics to get close to the tank to destroy it. Furthermore, it promotes strategy through tactics and I commend this. There is the micromanagement of supplies aspect in this game, which I adore and was seen in Men of War. The idea coincides with realism as your soldiers need to steal medical supplies and ammo from dead soldiers inventories after using ammo or those supplies. These two positives are standard in the Men of War series, as I did play the later released Men of War: Assault Squad. There are two negatives in this game that annoyed me and/or made me quit. The lighter negative is the voice acting. As this is set in the viewpoint of Russia, I was confused on why American voice actors were recounting battles in the loading screen prior to the battle and why there was mostly American voice actors having dialogue in battles. If this was not confusing enough, the voice acting was bland as it feels overly scripted and not natural. Moving on, the main negative is the AI, which is absolutely awful and made me quit. I am not the only one that has experienced bad AI as many negative reviews for this have reinforced that notion. For instance, your objective is to neutralise the artillery so you need a responsive squad to get around the artilley and machine gun nests. The AI instead runs in circles after I order them to move, wonder whether to be prone, crouched, or standing, and does not automatically shoot the enemy in front of them. These three issues within the AI absolutely make me cringe because the idea of a non-responsive AI and a realistic game where they can easily die, it makes for a terrible playing experience. I feel this game has gone backwards because Men of War featured solid AI that was responsive and tactical and this being the sequel has ruined the series for me. I did not want to downright bombard this game with negative comments because I enjoy the overall gameplay mechanics and atmosphere of the game, hence the positive comments that this game expands upon following the first game. But, the negatives of voice acting and mainly the AI have made me uninstall this game within 90 minutes unfortunately. This is a personal review so as mentioned before, not everyone will agree with this but coming from a strategy fan, its unfortunate I experienced this. I recommend avoiding this game.
Men of War: Red Tide Review - Rating: 8.4/10

General Impression

Men of War: Red Tide is a nice strategy game. The graphics and the textures are pretty nice. The atmosphere mostly happens in areas with water surrounding them, such as islands, coasts, etc. The battles also happen in villages, towns, forests, fields, military bases (pretty rare) and even other environments. The audio is pretty nice, I like the sound of everything. What is pretty noticeable: the guns’ sounds. They are pretty loud. This makes the game more realistic. The music is nice, especially the menu one, it really makes you feel nationalist. The gameplay is complex, in each mission you have to complete a lot of tasks, alike killing specific enemies, destroying specific units, combating all enemies on the map, reaching a certain point, etc. The story focuses on the Russian side, which, in this game, will have various battles with the Germans, Italians and the Romanians. It has 6 campaigns. Some of them are long, some of them are medium and 2 of them are short. The missions, which describe the story, happen in places where in the real-life soldiers also fought, due to the fact that this game is a RTS. The user interface is well-optimized, with no bugs and well-synthetized information. I also like the overall design of it. The controls are pretty good, except with 1 thing: the rotations’ controls of the cameras. I highly recommend you to reset them with the arrow buttons. The engines, just like in every Men of War game, are not perfect. The game has rarely crashes, and when it crashes, you obviously lose the progress of your mission. Try and save the game as often as you can, in order to avoid too much progress lose. You don't want to waste your time by restarting the mission from zero, right? The mechanics are sophisticated, being pretty nice and everything moves well-optimized. I also like how the infantry moves on the hills. Now, I’m going to talk a little about the G.E.M. editor. Just like in every Men of War game, you have a G.E.M. editor. You can create your own battles in it. It is complex and with a various number of functions. What I don’t like in this particular G.E.M. editor: first of all, you can’t drive airplanes. That’s a shame, especially that airplanes feel pretty nice. You drive it in the air, you have the freedom to control it however you want. And secondly, the amount of content is not that extraordinary either. There is pretty much content, but compared to Men of War: Assault Squad (both 1 and 2), isn’t the same content-filled. But, since it was made in 2009, I could say that the content in this G.E.M. editor isn’t really a major problem. Overall, this game is a nice simulation of the Russian side of World War 2.

Positive Points

Pretty nice and well-designed graphics and textures
Nice audio and nice music
Fun and challenging gameplay
Many missions throughout the 6 campaigns available
Infantry, immobile guns, batteries, vehicles, tanks, airplanes, ships and many other units available
3 difficulties available
A nicely designed user interface
Some pretty stable engines
Some pretty nice mechanics

Neutral Points

Trading cards would be a nice feature
The editor should have more content, including being able to drive airplanes
The driving of the ships should be somewhat better

Negative Points

The multiplayer is not alive anymore
There are some rare crashes, like in all the Men of War games

Notice: my steam playtime does not represent total time spent in this game.
Rating: mediocre (5/10)
Introduction Men of War: Red Tide is a real time strategy "Blitzkrieg" type of game, where you get limited amount of troops to finish the mission. Since you do not have the ability to build a base or produce units like in most other strategies, Men of War provides some challenge at higher difficulty settings if you try to finish it quick. Gameplay & Story: 5/10 The story is based on 2nd World War events where after picking a faction you want to fight for, you try to fulfill different objectives to gain some advantage for your fighting side. The campaign is seperated by single missions that do not have any connection to each other, besides some story description. The story is supported by some details about the events that supposed to have occured during WW2. The gameplay consists of only managing your squads and units that you receive to finish the mission. Combat & Challenge : 6/10 The combat itself is simple but some missions require micro-management to use your units in most effective ways. There are some different types of equiptment that units can use, so adjusting to different objectives and situations helps with progression. If taken slowly, the game does not offer much challenge since you can always re-draw units, heal them up and re-capture strategically important positions. Graphic & Interface : 5/10 The graphic look quite aged but the graphical details that most fighting scenes have are fitting the game really well. There are a lot of spots where units can take cover, destroyable surroundings and even the weapons and other gear dropped can be seen and picked up. The interface ingame is a bit overloaded with icons so it takes quite a while to figure all needed actions and commands for managing the squads. Progress & Mini-Games : 4/10 There are no mini-games and the whole progress is done by completing missions for different factions. Since the missions are not connected, it does not feel like you are progressing through the whole game, instead you get focused on single missions losing the big picture of the war. Audio & Immersion : 6/10 The audio gives a nice feedback during the battles where the biggest fire fights happen, where the heavy weapons and tanks are placed. The music provided a nice background sound without being too intrusive. The immersion during the missions was definetely on a high level, but sadly goes lost once a mission is finished and the campaign window is displayed until the next mission is started. Side-Notes

This game is single player only.
This game contains no achievements, nor ingame neither steam.
This game offers none to minimal replayability. If you played it once, you will most likely never touch this game again.
This game is often sold in bundles or being discounted.
Summary Men of War: Red Tide is an enjoyable blitzkrieg type RTS game and will most likely gather your attention for at least few missions. It is quite fun to finish each mission once, but since the game is fairly short and offers only minimal replayability, it is only advised if you enjoy older RTS and especially blitzkrieg and WW2 games. I hope this review helps you making the decision if its worth buying this game. Rate and leave a comment if you enjoyed reading it. ~ForestWolf

My men were advancing on my third try to get off the beach, not in a great way, but they were moving. The enemy barely noticed as long as we didn't shoot. oops, stepped in the wrong spot and triggered a story advace, and now we're surrounded. Ok, the enemy is following a scripted path to somewhere on the other side of the map and running straight past my men. We're shooting well and mowing them down! wait, why is no one shooting? oh, they only came with a handfull of bullets for their automatic weapons? well crap, ok, no problem, we'll scavenge from the dead. Here goes 30 to 40 minutes of micromanaging ammo, grenades, and bandages to each guy... Oh look, I was given re-inforcements. Ok another 30 minutes to get them all squared away with ammo. Got some tanks to blow up, neat. Another 30 minutes to re-organize everyone with decent weapons to move forward. Time to circle around these emplaced machine gunners aaaaand, crap, stepped in the wrong spot and fast forwarded the mission's scripting again. Ok, well, we won at least and my guys are ready for the next stage. Here we go, same map but it opened up a little, nice way of doing it. Lets get the squad with the machine guns and flame throwers up to... wait a sec. Where the hell are the machine guns and flame throwers I maticulously collected from the fallen before the map shifted? And no one has shit for ammo? WTF?!?!?! Aaaaaand I'm out. If you're going to make me organize it all manually after saving my guys from a quick out-matched demise, don't f'ing take it all away to shift the map a few yards north. That's lazy coding and nothing more. I love micromanaging my stuff to achieve a good outcome. I don't love finding out I wasted my time after being forced to do it in the first place.

Good if you enjoy saving and reloading hundreds of times until you win. The game is simply impossible without savescumming. It's not that the AI is very smart or challenging but you are given a squad of eight men and told to clear a massive map full of entrenched enemies supported by artillery and tanks. If you lose a single soldier you might as well reload. It's a pity because the game has many good things like dozens of different vehicles or the possibility of capturing enemy equipment but the extreme difficulty makes it a tedious experience.
