  Making*lovers… You are Kazuma, a hardline hopeless romantic who believes there is always a process to falling in love. He denies everything besides what he considers to be pure love. That means anyone that has a dating history is a no-go to him. Granted, due to his somewhat twisted sense of romance, he has been single all his life and will probably stay that way in years to come if not for Asahina Kakeru, his best friend, stepping in and playing cupid despite his rebuttal. As a person with a playful personality, Kakeru decides to set up a mixer and somehow manages to guilt-trip Kazuma into joining. Little did Kazuma know that the event would lead him to his so-called fateful encounter. Honestly, I think his best friend did not get enough credit for doing him this life-changing favor. Smee, the developer, has written some of the most adorable romance stories; however, they share one common issue. The protagonist is very, and I mean, very unlikeable, and out of every Smee’s VN in Steam, this one takes the cake. The thing that I’m not a big fan of is his flippant personality. At one point, he can be stubborn about his belief, and yet he’s willing to abandon it at a snap of his finger if he finds a good girl. So much for his so-called unshakeable resolve. On the other hand, Smee did an excellent job illustrating the eccentric personality of each heroine. As you clear the prologue, you'll notice why all of them had trouble finding the right partner – that's where the MC hops in. Alone, he was a pure annoyance, but when paired with a heroine, they made this cute chemistry that was just adorable to read. Plus, the VN made the progression crystal clear by separating the story into three parts, and in each phase, the couples grew closer as they started opening up and tackling their issues one step at a time. That part is what I love about this VN. As far as VN go, Making*lovers is something I consider pretty straightforward, as it has no bad endings and focuses entirely on the day-to-day interaction between each couple. In addition, there is no need to worry about making the wrong choice; in the first place, the only time you need to make a call is picking date spots to hang out – even then, whichever option you choose won't affect the story progression. However, Depending on how she reacts on your first date, you might see a different CG during your second date, alongside a few additional lines. And no, it still doesn't affect the story, but there is a personal sense of satisfaction in picking the right place – it's your call. Now, as for the restoration patch. There is some good news and bad news. The good news is that it’s free and only requires simple installation. The bad news is that it sometimes causes an incomprehensible error window to pop out, but that’s not all! There are cases where parts of the character sprite disappear, which causes softlocking of the VN. Thankfully, resetting the game fixes this issue; however, they still pop out occasionally, so make sure to keep plenty of saves. Despite its bumpy start with the MC personality and patch errors, Making*lovers was a nice, light read and the very definition of forthright.   One year and 11 months ago, Neko Nyan released Fureraba, another VN by Smee. It has since become my favorite VN and I've read it three times. In less than 2 years yes. I'll update this review when I'm done, but it looks like both Smee and Neko Nyan have outdone themselves once again with that same magic that made Fureraba so amazing. I think a lot of that has to do with the protagonist actually having an entertaining personality instead of being some self-insert doormat/brick. And with a translation quality well above average in the industry. If you like moege, or just want all to be happy and right in the world for 30 hours or so, just buy it. ======================================================================= Update ======================================================================= Having finished the novel, I can now offer a more in depth review. Route scores: Karen, solid 9/10 Reina, 8/10 Mashiro, 7/10 (barely) Ako, 8/10 Saki, weak 9/10 Wholistic score: weak 9/10 About my scale: The scale I use is bound on both ends by the extremes. For reference, a 2 is a burning garbage fire, and 10 is literal perfection. I only allow integer and half integer scores, but need some gradation for 9's. You can think of a weak 9 as 8.75. Yes, I realize my labeling is arbitrary. Karen's route was like the best parts of Himari and Yuzuyu's routes from Fureraba combined. You got the fantastic dynamic between the characters that Himari had, and the diabetic sweetness of Yuzuyu. At this point, I believe that Smee writes the best tsunderes. Bar none. Reina's route was sitting at a 7.5 before the ending, which elevated it into 8 (i.e. great) territory. It's good, really good, but not particularly game changing. Mashiro's route was the low point of the novel for me. The way the relationship started was just weird, and she was just weird. Not quirky, weird. It had to fight tooth and nail to get a 7, and I start every route at 7 before adjusting up and down. The last 30 minutes or so really saved it though. Ako's route was frankly the best done "sibling" route I've seen. It's used way too much in my opinion, and can get pretty weird. Her route didn't feel weird because it was believable given the circumstances, they have no blood relation and the guy was adopted into the family around the age of 10, so their attraction was fairly innocent rather than incestuous. Her route would have gotten an 8.5, except the literally 2 minute epilogue incurred a penalty. Epilogue's matter a lot. They're what you get left with when it's over. Saki's route was the only one that gave me the the same vibes as Fureraba, it was hilarious, sweet and overall excellent. The only problem was that the ending was just "good" and nothing to really cinch the route. Wholistically, I think the novel does some things very well, and the fact that for once we have a moege that ISN'T set in a school. And a main character that is an actual working adult (I would say ~ 23-24 years old). The characters are all adults, and they actually start dating before you know, that tearful declaration of undying love that is somehow obligatory in most romance VN's. Similar to Fureraba, I would consider M*L a "pure" moege. Meaning that it has no drama, no real conflict, just straight romance and comedy. To me, this is actually a plus because: A). It means it's more replayable. There's basically nothing to be spoiled on. and B). It's always better for a novel to just know what it is and not try to be something it isn't. So many VN's have incredibly contrived plots and forced drama that really just aren't necessary. Coincidentally, the ONLY moege I would consider "pure" are Fureraba and M*L... In this novel the common route is essentially non-existent. Which makes sense given that the MC's lifestyle and job changes in each route, but also means it loses something that made Fureraba truly special. The other major flaw is that unlike Fureraba, the cast of side characters aren't nearly as colorful or important. The *routes* in Making Lovers (M*L) are generally better than in Fureraba, ( I gave Fureraba's a 9 ,8.5, 7.5, 7.5). However I think Fureraba was a better *experience*. While the MC of M*L does have an actual personality, he isn't nearly as gutbustingly hilarious as Fureraba's Kyousuke. It's not that the MC of M*L isn't interesting or well written, in fact he's probably better written as a character. He just isn't as funny. Second, Fureraba had essentially the perfect common route, the conversation minigame was frankly a lot better than the date decision game. Largely because while you couldn't "fail" exactly, you could make wrong choices. The common route was also fucking hilarious, and really set the game up well with a good cast of characters. This game though, taking a girl to a love hotel on the first date? Why not? Was it the trainwreck you'd expect? No. Honestly it was fairly cute/funny. But nobody would seriously go through the options and think "Yeah, this is obviously the best spot to take her." Yet you can, and as far as I could tell the date ends exactly the same way. There are certainly "right" choices but no wrong ones. Somehow or another, there was just something about Fureraba that made it better overall, the characters, the humor the whole package. M*L is still an excellent novel. I bought it once on Steam to leave a review and once from Neko Nyan's website directly to put more money in their pockets. I regret nothing. It was amazing, just not enough to dethrone my favorite novel. I think many people would actually prefer this one to Fureraba. (They do on VNDB). It is certainly a breath of fresh air setting and age wise compared to 90% of VN's out there. And yes, the routes are generally better, with the best route in Making Lovers being better than the best route in Fureraba. Also, Smee seems to be the only non-nukige developer that doesn't feel obligated to make one of the characters a loli. Thank you Smee. Thank you. I know most of my review seems like I'm just dumping on it, but a weak 9 actually puts it at rank 7 on my list of all-time best novels. I do not give out 9's of any sort easily. It IS an excellent novel, just not AS excellent as Fureraba in my opinion. NekoNyan did a fantastic job with the translation, and my wallet is ready for the next Smee game they release. TLDR: I liked Fureraba better, though that's largely a personal preference. The majority of people will probably like this more as it has better routes, except Mashiro's. Overall an Excellent novel, that I give a weak 9/10 and has now entered into my top 10 novels at rank 7 out of 10. Also, no lolis. this is a plus for most people but could be a deal breaker for some. For route order, I would start on either Karen or Saki's route and end on the one you didn't pick. There are no bad routes. Mashiro was still *just* barely in good territory.   [h1] Decent VN For First Timers [/h1] As the title suggests, I view this is a pretty good intro to the VN genre. The problem with a lot of VNs that alienate beginners are the plethora of endings, bad endings, middle ground endings, pregnant endings and whatever the fuck BS that all takes 100 hours to finish with minimal to 0 voice acting. Another problem is that usually the choices you make do not logically produce the results you seek which basically forces players to fill out the 900 save states that they are given for every choice. Albeit with some flaws, this is a very decent, light and beginner friendly VN that can get you into the genre pretty easily. The prologue consisting of 3 chapters is where your decisions actually matter in what heroines route you go to. The nice part for beginners is that you don't need any game guides or walkthroughs, it's pretty obvious which choices lead to which routs. 2. There are 5 chapters of Getting Closer, where you get to know the heroines a bit better. 3. Finally there are 9 chapters of Going Steady, where you go through your daily life together, [b] BOINK [/b], and reach the conclusion. [h1] Characters [/h1] The meat of any VN, the heroines. But, firstly let's not forget about our main duder Kazuma. While he has some dumb quirks and tastes, you can pretty easily self-insert yourself as the cocky one-liner throwing anime-lad you always wanted to be when you were 12. In all honesty though, while the Japanese style of humor is not always entertaining to me, there are a good chunk of jokes here that honestly made me laugh as [b] some [/b] characters are quite entertaining to listen to. For me there were only 3 good routes in the game, one was meh and one was absolute trash, if you feel like after the first couple of chapters you are not interested in the heroine you chose, consider restarting as the quality does vary quite a bit from route to route in my opinion. So, if you don't want to get spoiled on the characters, skip to the CGs section. 1. Ako (The loving sister) Um.....step-sister I mean. Honestly the trope is overused at this point, however I do have to say that the dialogue between the MC and Ako, especially in the beginning parts, is probably the most amusing and interesting in the whole game. They really do have great chemistry and their story feels super separated in tone and pacing than the other 4 girls. All in all, this was my third favorite route in the whole game. 2. Reina (The Model) Probably the least interesting girl out of all them (not the worst though, we will get to that one later). Yea she has some quirks and cute moments but honestly, compared to the others, there is just nothing interesting in her story or character at all. She is firmly in the fourth place. 3. Saki (The Weather Lady) Second best route in the game. I don't know man, something about those mature vibes ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°). Jokes aside, she is quite an enjoyable character to watch. She has a nice personality, [b] vibes [/b] and is overall interesting both when watching her career and when dating. 4. Karen (College Clubmate) We degenerates know that the true winner in these types of things are the Tsunderes. Karen's personality does not just end with being a tsundere, she has goals and aspirations, she is sometimes dumb and sometimes super cool and supportive. Not going into to much detail, but without a doubt she is the best. 5. Mashiro (The Shitshow) Listen, this one is the worst and I am not gonna go into too much details. "Oh look how quirky I am", "I am not like other girls", "Aaaaaaaaah". If it's your thing, go for it, I don't judge ([b] I do [/b]). [h1] CGs [/h1] Did I mention that most of this is voice acted? It super helps, especially in the more interesting scenes ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°). Speaking of those, they are quite decent. Not on the level of stuff like Evenicle or HuneyPop but they still do the [b] job [/b]. [h1] Conclusion [/h1] Overall a pretty good meme. Expect to spend about 4-5 hours on each route if you want to read everything. Would recommend, especially to those new to the genre.
