Hello Charlotte EP3: Childhood's End Возможности

Synopsis

Charlotte's story has ended. Charlotte's story has begun.

A prologue. An epilogue.

An end. A beginning.

All ended well.

There was nothing to grieve about.

Info

Hello Charlotte: Childhood's End is the final story in the Hello Charlotte series, serving as a prologue and an epilogue to the main plot.

A prosumer noise machine, a virulent insect, an obscene revelation — and an earnest thank you.

Hello Charlotte games:

  • Hello Charlotte EP1 (2015) is a story about a memory of long-gone gods and loss of individuality, where your Puppet's new friend goes missing among the static.

It is available for free download as a demo and on itch.io:

    https://etherane.itch.io/hello-charlotte-ep1.

  • Hello Charlotte EP2 (2016) is a story lamenting the impossibility of universal happiness, and idolization of those out of our reach.

As her mind unravels, ink will flow, and blood-red flowers will bloom in the desolate field.

  • Hello Charlotte: Delirium (2017) is a spin-off minigame made to test some of the RPG Maker features. It's a red herring.

This is a review of Hello Charlotte EP1, EP2, and EP3. Play this game after the other two. I played OMORI and LOVED it, and though I probably should not have set my standards to that of OMORI, I still did. This game was recommended by many people who also enjoyed OMORI, so I gave it a shot, and if you have read my OMORI review, you could tell that this one requires a deeper explanation other than 'this game is near perfect please play it now.' I won't spoil any of the plot points, but I feel like I need to explain my experience with the games and their story(ies). First off, the art style. Cute, yet horrific, and possibly a bit too gory at times, is overall very pretty, and for that alone I wish it was more popular. Over the 3 games, there is a clear increase in budget both in art and overall design, and I do not consider this a bad thing. It is nice seeing the progression an indie dev goes through when making a game, and though sometimes the design changes made the game a bit more confusing, I felt that it was worth it. Speaking of confusion; The story is great, but very convoluted and confusing, containing retcons that are still canon due to the way the game's universe functions, fiction within fiction that breaks the fourth wall and references the player while still not being overly meta, and many other narrative discrepancies that I could not appreciate until I completed all three episodes. This is my only major complaint about the game. I felt as if the story wanted to go a certain direction but then completely changed direction between games. This did not clear up any of the confusion that I was experiencing when playing the game. I was not very fond of the first game outside of the art style, but it was still a quirky little RPG Maker game. Excluding the story, the gameplay is pretty much walk > die > go to last save > repeat, as well as solving puzzles along the way. I was expecting more but wasn't entirely disappointed. The last few minutes of the game made the whole experience worth it. I could see exactly where the game was going with the story and was very excited to play EP2, at least, I thought I knew where it was going. As EP2 started, I noticed a clear increase in budget and was very excited about what was to come. However, what came, did not really trail off of the ending of EP1 as I hoped. The story became something else entirely, but it was not something bad. Unlike the first game, there is only 1 'cheesy death/bad ending' compared to the many the first game had (I think), which already made the game a lot more fun to play. Most of the characters are likable in some way, and they are all very cute. I think I like C the best. The ending again was great but did not really lead into EP3. EP3, oh boy. The story starts out like EP2, but there is a slight difference that makes a pretty big impact on the story. I was not a fan of that slight difference. However, the game still had its charm and I did enjoy the story, or at least, what I could attempt to comprehend from it. Eventually, the game introduces a new area that through hardly any explanation changes the plot entirely. After I realized what was happening, the overall story made sooooooo much more sense. So please, if you are playing through the games and are confused as hell, just hold on. The game then continues telling its story, and a good one at that. At this point, I can actually appreciate the story. I am still a bit confused, but glad to have got this far. Eventually, after some more intricate story-telling and puzzles, I come to the climactic ending where my confusion is dissolved and the game makes complete sense. Overall my experience with the game was mixed, and the themes of the game did not hit home to me, but I can with absolute certainty say that it was not a waste of my time. I probably set my standards too high but I do believe that the game has objective flaws in its writing. Though they are hard to overlook, especially at first, once you understand the game's plot and its universe, those flaws become relatively transparent. Highly recommend it to people who enjoyed OMORI or like dark comedies (with a vague and confusing plot at times). I would give it a 9.5/10 but between EP1's gimmicky death mechanics and the hard-as-hell-to-follow story I feel like a slightly lower rating is deserved. 8.5/10

If Charles Eyler has a million fans, then I am one of them. If Charles Eyler has ten fans, then I am one of them. If Charles Eyler has only one fan then that is me. If Charles Eyler has no fans, then that means I am no longer on earth. If the world is against Charles Eyler, then I am against the world.
