Field of Glory II: Medieval - Rise of the Swiss Возможности

From the late 1300s some Swiss started to carry the long pike, at first as a minority weapon, the bulk of their soldiers still carrying the halberd. In 1422, a small Swiss army was beaten at Arbedo by a Milanese army containing a large number of men-at-arms, who dismounted after their initial mounted charge failed. It was noticed that the pikemen fared better in combat against dismounted men-at-arms than the halberdiers, due to the longer reach of their weapons.

From that time onwards the proportion of pikemen in Swiss armies was steadily increased, so that by the end of the fifteenth century it had become the dominant weapon. The halberd was only retained by a small number of experienced soldiers to defend the banners, and to break up an enemy's formation if the pike advance was halted.

The new Swiss system proved an astounding success on the battlefield: victorious in the Burgundian Wars, defeating the Holy Roman Empire in the Swabian War, and as mercenaries they were a key component of French King Charles VIII's armies in Italy. Soon pike formations were adopted in many western European countries, notably in Germany by the famous 'landsknechts'.

In Bohemia, war had broken out between the followers of Jan Hus, a Proto-Protestant religious reformer, and the Catholic royalists. The Hussites were mainly common people, and they had few nobles to provide heavily armoured men-at-arms. To counter the royalists’ advantage in heavy cavalry, they adapted simple agricultural wagons into the 'Wagenburg', a mobile fortress, from within which the Hussite soldiers could fight. This was mainly a defensive weapon, although at the Battle of Kutna Hora in 1421 it was used to break through a royalist army.

In Spain, the Reconquista was finally completed when the Kingdom of Granada was conquered in 1492. Here, the armies of Castile and Aragon had also adopted the pike, but Castile had in addition revived the use of sword and buckler men, in imitation of the ancient Roman legionaries.

England saw a series of wars between the Lancastrian and Yorkist branches of the Plantagenet royal family. Today these are known as the Wars of the Roses. Here the battlefield was still dominated by the longbow and dismounted men-at-arms, although a few mercenary pikemen were recruited for some campaigns.

Another backwater was Scandinavia, where Sweden fought to break free from the Kalmar Union, which was dominated by Denmark.

  • Additional coverage for the following nations and factions from the introduction of Swiss-style pike tactics or Hussite war wagons by themselves or their opponents until 1500 AD: Aragonese, Berber (Wattasid), Bohemian (Catholic), Burgundian, Castilian, Danish, English (Lancastrian, Yorkist and Tudor), Florentine, French, German (Imperial, Feudal and City armies), Granadine, Hungarian, Hussite (Taborite and Utraquist), Low Countries, Milanese, Neapolitan, Papal, Polish, Rus, Scots, Swiss, Venetian. Each of these has their own historically-based banner. (Several European nations are already covered up to 1500 AD by previous DLC).

  • 22 new units.

  • 60 more army lists allowing historically realistic armies for each of the above factions and their allies at different dates during the period, and bringing the total number of Medieval army lists to 303. In addition armies can include contingents from historical allies. This gives over three hundred thousand permutations. You will never run out of new matchups to try.

Well "Field of Glory" has come a very long way since the pike and shot campaigns back in the ear lies but one thing has been absolutely consistent-- all have been excellent, well made, historically accurate superb games."The Rise of the Swiss" is no exception to that.To see the wee blokes banging away out of their proletarian war wagons is worth the price alone. For a war game it is exceptionally pretty,as one would expect it works well and it adds a raft of new interesting battles in a changing era.Anything that a bona fida nit picker like me could b---- and moan about.Nah,nothing it's very good ,buy it if you can...

I was beta-testing this DLC (I am truly grateful for the opportunity) and I can absolutely recommend Rise of the Swiss - I bought it directly when it was released, just to continue playing - I can not stop - it is worth alone because of the Swiss and the Hussites, because they introduce a complete new playstyle, also Burgund as a new nation is very interesting to play, but the DLC also gives several other/old nations nice additions like German Landsknechte as a Swiss counterpart. The Rise of the Swiss DLC also can be seen as a completion of the Storm of Arrow-DLC up to the timeline 1500. The increased use of artillery and handgunners changes the playstyle a lot in my opinion. While the knights can be made good use from, you will have to use them very carefully in comparison to High Medieval era, because they have not much chances against now not only the longbows of the Storm of Arrows-DLC but also the upcoming Pikeniers (Swiss, German landsknechts, Burgundian mix between longbow and pikeniers and "normal pikeniers of other nations"). I normally do not write reviews of games, but I am a hobby historian and in my opinion Field of Glory and all its DLCs until now (including Rise of the Swiss) are a historical masterpiece (of course it has some small flaws) - by playing this game you will experience historical tactics and battles and finally truly understand why tactics, weapons etc. changed during time and perhaps even develop your own solutions for specific problems of the era. While the Total War series is a mindless gore fest (more for juvenile and action addicts, but sweet graphics - I played almost all the titles of the series) Field of Glory including Rise of the Swiss is like Chess or a table top game for History enthusiasts and players who prefer realism/historical accuracy. It is easy to learn, difficult to master, but so rewarding. PS: This is almost the same comment I already wrote into another "Rice of the Swiss" Dev-Update Discussion but back then (a few days ago) I was beta testing it.

Excellent addition to the game. Usually whilst playing I have a youtube or BBC compilation of chilled out medieval or folky music playing in the background, but this didn't seem to capture the mood whilst playing as the Swiss, and I found it more fitting to play a bit of Motörhead.

Another great DLC adds a'lot of tactical options war wagons swiss pikemen and landsknecht etc. Using these new units along side firearms and cannons just makes everything a'lot more strategic and fun to use. The war of the roses factions are very enjoyable and as someone who has always had an interest in the conflict its much appreciated well done devs the DLC is a great edition to the game Bring on the ottomans!
