  VR has the uncanny ability to provide "The Next Best Thing". Take something like Eleven. Sure, it is not real table tennis, but it's really close and you need neither a table, nor someone right next to you to play. Many of us will never get to drive high powered race cars on circuit, but VR simracing gets us one step closer to that. Blueplanet and other similar apps allowed us to visit places that we would never otherwise visit. In the midst of the pandemic, apps like VRChat, Neos, Altspace has provided surprisingly earnest social interactions to all of us. Everyone seems focused on when the next Alyx for VR would be. But in this wait for the next traditional game, perhaps they forget that what makes VR special is not the virtual, but the real. And those several paintings I've made in the last two weeks with no prior experience are very much real. Vermillion is the Next Best Thing to oil painting.

  Love this VR program! I'm a service disabled Veteran and this VR program even helps with my PTSD. Worth every penny and more! I've just started creating paintings and I'm enjoying every minute of it. Thank you for creating this magical program!

  The one guy who made this game is very cool and his software rules. Not the kind of thing you normally expect from Steam or from VR games, but this oil painting simulator is just so dang NEAT!!! I really only have two issues: I find the behavior of the brushes to be a little unpredictable. This isn't at all helped by me only playing this game on Quest via Virtual Desktop, I'm sure. I don't have the hardware to do a proper Link connection, though. Brushes sometimes just act in ways that I don't really understand. Not holding the brush in your hand also means there's no feeling of bristle resistance, which of course is unreasonable to expect from this software, but even so it does make painting more difficult. The other issue is that I wish there was a little controller map graphic somewhere. I'm not going to go through the tutorial again, but it's cumbersome to pull out my phone and look up the controls when I've been away from the game for a week or two and forget what the buttons do. I also think the web browser is a bit of a strange inclusion. There's all kinds of VR software for free to do a desktop overlay, but whatever, I guess that's more accessible. The only thing is that the browser doesn't have an ad blocker installed, so I never touch it. I just use Desktop+ to put up an overlay.

  I LOVE Vermillion! This is a realistic oil painting simulator for VR. You start off in a classy Victorian room with good lighting and get a tutorial on how everything works. It was very thorough and easy to get started. You have an easel you can adjust and a canvas you can make whatever size and dimensions you wish to a certain extent. You also have a palette for mixing any color you need and a set of brushes with a cleaning rag and thinning solvent. You can also adjust the rotation of the brush and where your hand is placed along the handle. If you have no idea what you are doing or you want to learn more there are videos you can watch to follow along and paint with inside the sim on youtube or whatever other website you wish to use for a reference. It suggests a video of painting a robin or following along and painting a Bob Ross landscape but you can pick whatever you want. I suggest checking out something on how to mix colors. You can find one in the bookmarks tab. The dev is active, super helpful, and has created a masterpiece of software. Vermillion has become one of my favorite VR games. I can easily spend 6 hours painting and totally lose track of time and I don't have to worry about buying supplies, brushes and paint drying out, or cleaning everything every time I want to take a break! Newbies will find it a great space to learn and experiment and seasoned painters will find that although it isn't 100% exactly like real life it's damn near close enough. This will end up being one of the VR titles I spend the most time on for sure. It's something you can play forever.   Edit: The creator has rescinded the EULA changes, and artists are once again able to make money off their own art. This software is now worth a full recommendation. I love Vermillion. It's really a great piece of software. Even as someone with little art background and no experience painting, it's enjoyable to sit and maybe follow a youtube tutorial and make a nice picture. And it's easily the most accessible (financially) form of painting I've found. I had fully intended to give it a glowing review and recommendation. So why the thumbs-down? "The User must not earn or seek to earn money from the User Creations and must not exploit the User Creations for any commercial purpose" That's from the newly updated EULA. It's a line that, per Vermillion's creator's own words, exists solely to sell a to-be-released "pro" version. Artists shouldn't have to jump through legal hoops to make money from their art. Pro versions should sell on the merit of their advanced features, not arbitrary legal restrictions. Stand in solidarity with artists and insist this EULA be changed before giving money to it's creator. When and if this is fixed, I'll update this review to the recommendation the software itself deserves. Until then, just play around with one of the many free painting vr games out there and save your money.

  Very nice, made a bob-ross-like painting in no time, things work as you would expect in real life... + in this virtual world you have undo and 4 layers. You can mess around without worrying about wasting good paint on a tacky mountain with clouds painting, and just have fun until inspiration hits you for real. Brilliant things that could be improved for the future. ( small nitpicks ) Paintbrush sounds... after playing for 3h on a canvas it's quite clear that the brushes have quite a limited set of audio clips, so the repeating sound clip of the brush… brush… brush … can become mildly annoying... would be nice to get a bit more variety the ambience sounds, at some point the audio stops as the clip is about to reboot itself, and you get this weird unsettling 3 seconds of total silence... if you are in the zone painting, that sudden quiet moment takes me out of what I'm doing. Would be nice if the clip was blended so as it loops, the audio track overlaps the mix out and in without a dead silence in the middle.

  I have always wanted to paint like Bob Ross but was unwilling to spend the hundreds of dollars for paints, brushes, canvases, easels, ect, just to prove to myself that I have no artistic abilities whatsoever. Now, for the small sum of $20 I was able to determine that MAYBE, possibly, buried very deep, I might have a tiny kernel of not totally sucking at painting. Thank you. :)

  This has to be the most cerebral VR experience I have had. I dabble in the arts, but as a writer or orator. Audible pleasure being my strong suit, so in no way am I capable of putting together a practice studio. With this, I can explore the visual arts at its core - creation... The blank slate. And I don't have to buy any additional materials, worry about ruining my floor, or dealing with my cat chewing up my brushes. This is VR hotness.
