About the Game

You’re a nobody. An outcast in your own vampiric sect. A political prisoner of no particular value. An immigrant who never found her roots in a city of immigrants. A chainsmoker whose favorite pastime is staring blankly at the streets through the windows of a fast food joint at 4AM. The sinking feeling in the pit of your stomach tells you that you’re doomed, and distorted voices from the shadows seem to agree. The curse of your clan makes interacting with everyday technology difficult. Dissociation is your natural state.

But when New York’s Anarch leader meets a gruesome end, out of all the bloodsuckers in the metropolis, you’re the one picked to investigate. Make no mistake: this is obviously a trap, yet another move in the horrible game of Jyhad, the eternal struggle for power between warring vampire generations. But you’re Lasombra, and if there’s one thing you know, it’s this: if the Ventrue Prince and her followers underestimate you, they’re going to deeply regret it.

Vampire: The Masquerade – Shadows of New York is a visual novel set in the rich universe of Vampire: The Masquerade. It's a continuation of our previous title, Coteries of New York. While Coteries was a general introduction to the world depicted in the 5th Edition of the hit tabletop role-playing game, Shadows presents a more personal and unique tale.

  • A visual novel tackling themes of personal and political horror, suitable for both Vampire: The Masquerade veterans, and fans of narrative-driven games who are newcomers to the setting.

  • A continuation of Coteries of New York. See the familiar metropolis through entirely different eyes. Expect new characters, new locations and a fresh original soundtrack.

  • Play as a member of the Lasombra clan. Formerly vicious foes of the Camarilla, the Magisters decided to search for safety in the ranks of their former enemies. Master the shadows and communicate with the inhabitants of the Other Side, but beware – Oblivion is always lurking out there, ready to devour you whole.

  • Explore the streets of the Big Apple. While you search for ways to satiate your bloodthirst, catch glimpses of various fascinating vignettes and forge connections with the eccentric inhabitants of the city. One playthrough won’t be enough to see it all.

  • Shape your mind, shape your fate. You used to avoid defining yourself and tried to stay neutral, but given your situation, you can no longer afford to do so. The choices you make will alter the way you think, and your thinking will alter the paths you take.

If it’s called Vampire: The Masquerade, does that mean you have something in common with World of Darkness, Bloodlines 2, Redemption, the cult tabletop RPG system, or...?

Yes. Shadows of New York is set in the same shared universe, but offers independent experiences and stories. You may spot some connections with the other titles, but Shadows is not a sequel to any existing products. The World of Darkness is a media franchise and shared universe, shaped by various creators and participants, meaning: all stand-alone stories play into a greater whole. Berlin falling to the Anarchs during an official LARP, the Lasombra clan joining forces with the Camarilla in the Vampire: The Masquerade - Chicago By Night 5th Edition sourcebook, Sophie Langley’s plot to take control of New York in Coteries of New York – all of these events subtly influence and interact with each other.

Do I need to play Coteries of New York to understand and enjoy the story of Shadows of New York?

Not at all. Shadows of New York is a continuation of Coteries of New York, which means it shares the New York City setting and a large part of the supporting cast with our previous title, but is designed to offer a different experience. Coteries served as an introduction to the basics of Vampire: The Masquerade 5th Edition – it was focused on showcasing different vampire Clans and core concepts of the setting through the point of view of a newly-fledged vampire, a character who did have a defined backstory, but by and large meant to serve as a player avatar.

Shadows of New York is a more personal story, told from the perspective of a well-defined character who’s already integrated into the Kindred society and has a developed inner monologue of her own (which means you influence her personality instead of shaping it). Those who are familiar with Coteries will already know a large part of the cast and catch some references that would otherwise go unnoticed, but those who decide to start with Shadows and get back to Coteries later should be able to enjoy both experiences just as much as they would if they played them in their release order. The two stories are essentially separate, different both tonally and thematically.

Which platforms is Shadows of New York available on?

Shadows of New York launched simultaneously on PC (Windows/Mac OS/Linux), PS4, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch in September 2020.

Does the game support controllers?

Yes. You’re able to play both with mouse and keyboard, as well as with a controller.

It's like... Playing D&d with a DM who won't actually let the players choose anything because it's their platform for venting. They're using it as a tool to monolouge about extistential dread for hours, before you get to choose what kind of way you get to say "hello" to someone, and then there will be another hour of having to read someone chewing the scenery. The character is so set, the illusion of choice is so flimsy, I can't even pretend I wasn't just reading a book.

I enjoyed the first one: 'Coteries of New York', which had great writing and a surprising amount of player choice, but 'Shadows of New York' clearly has different writers and did not come close to the previous writing - which is quite dire since VNs are all about their writing. Reams and reams of trite, rambling monologues that don't progress the story anywhere, with very little player interaction other than clicking 'next'. Scene 1 must have around 50 or more text boxes with occasional player choices limited to saying the same thing using 3 different phrasings. And this was just to learn that you're fired. Eventually the tedium gets too much and you start quick-clicking through just to see something happen. And this is pretty much the same for the rest of the game. Additionally there's no choice to play different characters, and the default 'angry-emo girl' you play is pretty scripted - you don't get to shape your character at all. I think perhaps the writers come from other fields and have never written for games before?

I would recommend this game if you played Coteries of New York, because it's a direct sequel and it's a good book. Notice I said book and not game. Mainly because there aren't any real choices. You play a Camarilla chick who won't actually consider leaving the Camarilla, and she's a former Catholic no matter what you believe or want. Her reactions are automatic and not up to you. It's a good read, but it really isn't much of a game. Exciting story, though. I only wish we could've heard it from a non-Cam perspective.

I blew through Coteries of New York in one sitting--a really engaging game, very well-written and with interesting characters. So I was excited to play this sequel but was bored almost immediately. You don't choose your character--you play as the woman on the cover art of the game. She has a very specific personality (the biting, aggressive, i'm too cool for life kind of privileged hipster perpetually judgmental cynic). She provides plenty of un-enjoyable monologues in this vain, while Coteries had a more neutral approach in it's protagonist's writing. I couldn't bring myself to retry and read more after my first death here. I really just don't like the character or the writing this time around. This game feels like it has an undeserved chip on its shoulder and I only played roughly ten minutes of it :-\ you'll either LOVE this main character or won't at all. I didn't like her at all. Not for everyone I guess.

Like "Coteries of New York" this game excels at atmosphere and lore - and is also too short. I don't really know what else to say about it much except that everyone who wants to experience Vampire: The Masquerade atmosphere like it was meant to be does right in getting this game (and "Coteries" first) but it is also a woefully short experience which is much more on rails, too, as one would think.

Years ago, a group of VTM players had a space in the same old warehouse as me in Chicago. One of them would ride the Green Line, at night, to the warzone that was Garfield Park WEARING A FUZZY TAIL. VTM is no joke. This game's story is amazing. It has surprisingly hilarious pop culture reference jokes, and the "deep" parts are believable and well written. It's beautiful to look at and the soundtrack rips. I was surprised at how much I liked it. I'm off to buy that fuzzy tail now...

The story itself is alright, but you might want to brush up on some knowledge about the World of Darkness universe lore first to understand it. A lot of terms used in game and lots of different factions and sects too to wrap my head around. Not surprisingly I got the "bad ending." I got it on sales though, and with the play time, I'd say it's worth it.

It has potential, but I find the characters lacking at best, and grating at worst. Which really hurts the visual novel given how much we follow the characters throughout. In my opinion, I think the main issue was how unsympathetic the majority of the characters were, which contributed to the story becoming more unengaging the further it went along. There is a way to do morally-skewed characters and have the audience still root for them despite their horrid actions. Shadows of New York manages, instead, to make the audience feel... little. A little irritation. A little excitement. I was hoping for more. But the writing just falls short.

I enjoyed the vampire lore. This was one of the better looking visual novels, and I dont play a lot of these. I will keep my eye open for more short stories like this.

Interesting visual novel of V:TM. Play it *after* Coteries because it is truly a sequel. You encounter all the characters you met in the first one, and it provides a lot of support story-wise.
