I give the game a thumbs up, but it's got a lot of issue with it's design.
Here is the good: It's got a Rogue-like feel to the dungeon crawling, you don't have any idea what's behind the next door, it might be a mini-boss, it might be a vast empty chamber, or it might be a trapped room with very limited time to figure out how to get out. Some of the room are complete nonsense, some are interesting. There is a progression system, upgrades, and the ability to buy some items, including a pet. There are attributes you can add points to with every level. There is a clever climbing system which adds the third dimension to movement and in some areas/rooms adds to exploring for rewards. In my opinion, the climbing is underutilized. Here are the problems: The lighting and visual range in the dungeons is pretty bad. This was obviously done so that you will walk right into traps and enemies, but it looks terrible and doesn't really add any difficulty to the game in my opinion. In some areas, there is light with no apparent light source and you can see a very long distance. In many rooms, there are light sources where you can't see the light until you get to within 30 feet or so; this also means that you can't see an enemy until you get that close. There isn't sound occlusion, or if there is, it is badly rendered. You can hear enemies immediately when you enter a room most of the time, though some enemies don't seem to make any noise. So even though you can't see more than 30 feet or so, you know that there will be enemies just around a corner. This effectively becomes your 'sight'. Although there is progression; weapon/item upgrades, skill points, etc., the upgrades are nearly meaningless or in some cases present more drawbacks than benefit. In fact, I daresay a player could continuously play dungeon after dungeon with starting gear, ignoring all progression and upgrades indefinitely for 20 levels and not really notice much of anything when they then executed skill upgrades, bought armor, and cashed in all the chests. This cannot be understated, the reward for completing a dungeon leads nowhere. You get chests which give weapon or other item upgrades, but these upgrades amount to a 1% difference. Because all of the damage is flat, it makes no difference if 3 swings of a sword does 300 damage or with the upgrade does 303 damage. It doesn't change the fact that it takes 3 swings. So with 20 upgrades 3 swings could get up to 360 damage, but it will still take 3 swings to bring down the same enemy. You never really make much headway with the weapon upgrades. Some item upgrades appear to literally do nothing at all, the spell books for example; a level 10 spell book appears to me to be the same as level 1, I cannot tell the difference. Some other aspects of weapon damage that need help are things like the arrows and bolts. The hand held crossbow does huge damage for some reason, but has the range of a kid shooting a rubber band and for some reason there is no way to have more than 4 bolts, so it is impractical as a main weapon. The short bow does more damage than a normal bow. A bow that can switch between fire and cold arrows does less damage than a bow than doesn't have any magic capability. The fire and cold arrows don't seem to make any difference between them, the damage against targets is the same. As far as the attribute points go, they give 1% positive effect on something. For example add a point into intelligence, and you get 1% more damage, 1% faster cool down, etc; but it comes with you taking 1% extra damage, you move 1% slower. This is so silly, I cannot imagine why it was put into the game. Strength is even stranger, you get 1% more health, but take 1% more damage? What the heck was the thinking behind this? The various armor sets actually seem to have more impact than skills, but they also come with huge drawback. For example, the caster armor gives extra spell damage and help with movement speed, but also amplifies damage against the player. Considering that the damage system is flat, the armors are likely to be an item that will have the most impact for a player. Combat is hit and miss, some enemies are straight forward easy, others don't mechanically work the same way, like they aren't staggered or stunned by hits. There are a few that appear and disappear, one bounces around like a pinball. There is a mini-boss room with a skull that darts around in the air high above, if you don't have a ranged weapon with plenty of ammo, you're screwed. In combat, when an enemy takes a swing at you the game awkwardly slows time, which completely breaks your rhythm if you're casting a spell. There is no HUD, so there is no visual indicator where you are at in the casting so you're probably just going to end up dead. There is a lack of RNG where it is needed and use of RNG where isn't. Damage is not randomized or target location based. Completing a dungeon always rewards me with the same thing: 6 chests, so you then upgrade 6 random items. By completing dozens of random dungeons you end up with dozens of upgraded items. There is no specialization or skill path. The money and items that are found in a dungeon are limited to wooden boxes that have to be smashed open. Each box will always be empty, arrows, a hand held crossbow, food, or 10 gold. Some rooms types always have many boxes to open, other rooms and areas may be vast areas that never have any boxes in them. Killed enemies never drop anything and there is no looting of corpses. Conclusion: The game has a lot of appeal, you get some sense of crawling around in a dungeon-like setting, though some of the rooms are outdoors and many come across as nonsense (they just don't fit in with the theme or have no purpose for existing). Progression is an afterthought; in fact, it can be ignored. Playing solo you will get killed quite often, usually due to one or two enemy types that exhibit awkward mechanics. Playing in coop, you will normally never have trouble defeating anything. The developer should rethink some of the game combat mechanics, player progression, rewards, and make more use of the vertical in room designs.

*Update* Blackjard has broken radio silence and is no longer working on VRDK, in order to continue working on his own health. I wish him well in his future endeavors. I cannot recommend this game. It has been over 2 years since any new update has come to it. It needs a lot of work still, and as far as I am concerned, it has been abandoned. I literally have't had any reason to play it since I bought it in 2020. I am fully aware it's just one dev, and we've been given the excuses of "covid" and "burnout", but with all due respect that shouldn't last over 2 years if they've actually been taking care of themselves during that time. The game is 5 years old, with almost half of that time having no updates. If things change, I will update my review, but as it stands I simply cannot recommend the game to anyone. I feel bad enough getting some of my friends to buy it because it looked so promising as a VR RPG, but alas it has been dead for far too long at this point. Hopefully the dev, Thomas (Blackjard), starts feeling better. I don't demand they come back and finish their game if their circumstances are that bad. But I also won't lie and say that 2 years without content updates is okay either. Unless things change with VRDK, you're legitimately better off buying Legendary Tales instead. Much better game.

Steam needs to start putting warnings on games in EA where developer activity has been absent for a period of time. Not trying to criticize the one person behind this entire game, but even under the circumstances they have been absent, it has been two years. Wouldn't have bought this game knowing that prior to purchase. Hopefully they get better and come back.

This game is unfinished, and abandoned by the dev, and it is honestly disgusting that they are putting it on sale, let alone leaving it up for purchase, do not buy this, it has officially been abandoned.

VR Dungeon Knight is a fantasy, dungeon crawler with randomly-generated dungeons, that are procedurally generated, contain loot at the end of each dungeon. This is an early access game, so expect some rough edges. Disclaimer: not tested yet: final dungeon and online coop mode (Conclusion/TL;DR at the bottom of the review) Early Access: Feedback and Updates One of the most important thing for me personally in any early access game is how much involved the developer is. Already early on the developer has been responding to feedback and actually has pushed an update to fix a few bugs + changed some stuff after some feedback within LESS than 24 hours after release. This is a very good sign and how early access should be done. Visuals This game has quite nice graphics for a one-man show. The environments look good, the dungeons are very atmospheric. The dungeons are dark and require you to carry a lantern with you which makes you anticipate threats waiting in the dark for you. One of the better looking VR indie games out there. Sound Fantastic sound, finally a game with some background music. The ambient SFX in the dungeons create a creepy atmosphere which helps to keep up the tension. On the other hand, when you get rewarded with chests at the end of each dungeon you get welcomed by cheery music that makes you feel like you deserved that loot. There is also some voice over which is done professionally with good audio quality. Something rarely seen in those 1-man developer games. Gameplay The game currently uses arm-swinger locomotion, however, the developer has already stated that he is going to implement other forms of locomotion as well, including teleportation and trackpad locomotion. You can equip several weapons and other items into your belt before delving into a dungeon. Right now there is a dagger, a sword, a shield, a lanterna and a bow available, with more weapons planned to get added in future updates. The game hints at a future armor and skill system as well. Right now there are 2 dungeon difficulty to choose from: passive and deadly. I recommend to start out with the deadly dungeons right away, as the passive dungeons seemingly lack enemies. Combat is pretty standard, similarly as seen in other non-physics based combat systems (think Karnage Chronicles, Swordmaster VR, Vanishing Realms and the ilk). Right now the combat isn't too exciting, however, the developer has already promised an overhaul. Chests are rewarded for each successful playthrough a dungeon and those upgrade your existing weapons or add a new one if you don't own an item already. There is a boss dungeon that you should only tackle once you're well equipped, though I haven't mustered myself to go into that one yet. Comparison to similar games Let's compare it to other games in the same genre: - Karnage Chronicles: while that game has fancier graphics, the combat system is equally in need of an overhaul which the developers of Karnage Chronicles are not that willing to do from reading their posts. Karnage Chronicles is also much more linear and limited in the amount of levels it has. If you like more impressive visuals, though, Karnage Chronicles may be a better choice. Otherwise Dungeon Knight VR seems to offer more replayability and longevity than Karnage Chronicles. - Vanishing Realms: THE best dungeon crawler for VR out there right now. This game doesn't beat it, though Vanishing Realm's biggest disadvantage is the short duration due to the handcrafted level. If you don't own Vanishing Realms yet, buy it. In the future with the promised combat Overhaul, Dungeon Knight VR may be able to win over Vanishing Realms. Conclusion While it has some aspects that definitely need improvement (e.g. the combat system), the existing framework looks good, feels polished and makes me excited for what comes next. It isn't winning over some other games in a similar genre, but can keep up with plenty of current releases. I recommend this game for anyone interested in fantasy games, dungeon crawlers and who are willing to support an early access game in its early stage. This is the phase where YOU can help to shape the game how you want it to be together with the developer. If anyone has question about the games I've missed to address in this review, please leave a comment!

I've been keeping my eye on this game for a while. Finally bought this game on sale and I'm fully regretting not buying it sooner! If your a fan of Dungeons and Dragons, adventuring through dark creepy dungeons, and killin' stuff, this game is definitely for you. The Good Stuff: - It's super exciting treking through dark dungeons, peaking around corners, sneaking up on a scary monsters and plucking an arrow through them. - I love smashing crates and climbing up on vines into secret rooms to find treasure. - Combat is suprisingly fun, putting gear on your belt is a great way to swap between weapons and items realistically. - The sound effects and music are perfect for the setting. - Being able to purchase different classes and reallocate skill points as much as you want is also a great feature. - Co-op IS AN ABSOLUTE BLAST. Joined a random guy's game my first night playing and we ran through several dungeons, fighting stuff and experimenting with different weapons. This is where the game really shines. The Not-So-Good Stuff: (Developer if you're reading, this part is more for you) - The hands do not align well with the controllers. It makes it difficult to aim spells and arrows. The "model-view" feature is neat but the hand models still have the upper wrist attached which looks silly. The hand model should really just be the hand, not the wrist. - Monster AI seems a bit wonky. Sometimes they just kind of stand in place...I could be wrong about this though since I was doing co-op and my partner was shooting fireballs. Maybe the fireballs have a stun effect? I'm still new so this might be the case. - I'd love to see more coins and health scattered among the props. There are already some coins and such hidden around, behind bookcases, on top of pillars..but I want MORE. even if it's just a couple of coins here and there, I want to feel like I'm really scrounging around for stuff. - I love the darkness of the rooms, really makes it scary at times, and also makes the lantern important to bring. But perhaps the rooms are a little TOO dark, just a touch brighter would be nice.

I love this game. Absolutely love it. Cos i have two vr set ups i have been playing co-op with my kids and they have been playing together. It's incredibly fun, and you get a great sense of comraderie, cooperation and adventure. Its just scary and realistic enough to be atmospheric and exhilarating, but cartoony enough so it's not completely terrifying and unplayable. The locomotion system combined with the graphical style and weapons management is brilliant and amazingly immersive. This is a glimpse of the future of gaming. And it's just great fun, and good exercise too. Please please please keep up the good work and keep adding to this.

This is the future of Virtual Reality that I wanted. I want to feel powerful and adventure with my friends. A huge variety of ways to play between customizing you build. Personally, I love using the pirate like pistol and muskets. The game provides enough content for me to say it is well worth the price. Finding good VR games can be tough, but I promise you, VR Dungeon Knights is one of them. Hopefully in the future we will get some support for 4 players instead of the current 2.
