TLDR: **THIS GAME IS ABANDONNED** Bought this game because it looked super promising. Looked into the dev's history and they have a history of just abandoning games. I thought this game would be the exception because they were very active in the discord server. Nope.

I hate giving this game a bad review. I honestly love/loved it. When it first went early access I paid full price, didn't even wait for a sale. It had its issues but most early access games do. The devs were very social on their discord at the time as well. The last year I've been playing though there is never another soul on and the discord never has any updates,

At the time of this review, this recommendation comes with the caveat you know what you are getting into. The game is still very much being tested and built upon. If you're looking for a full/complete/hassle free experience, then I would Follow or wishlist it and check back up on it in a few months. Things to expect:

bugs
placeholders
incomplete systems
frequent changes/overhauls to systems
If you are still on board after all of that, the game itself is fun, has a nice art style, and has some solid bones to be built on with a Dev team that interacts well with the community. Things of note:

combat has a bit of inertia to it and is more akin to Zelda or similar where you are rolling/dodging and attacking than a system where you are just cleaving through enemies.
there are two or three overworld zones currently with some caves to some underground zones. There are no quests; these are mainly to get a feel for combat and explore a bit right now. The meat of what there is to play right now is the infinite dungeon which is, as you would expect, a dungeon that continues to generate as you go through it.
the camera is a bit wonky right now and is fixed. This has been a point of contention that's pretty well documented at this point and will likely change in the near future
there is no controller support implemented as of yet, however, it is very easy to add that support in yourself using the Steam controller config. I was able to map one out within a few minutes that worked perfectly. Long term they do want this to have native support however. I have included the share link for this profile here as well. Config: steam://controllerconfig/1149400/1989760929
the direction of the game is planned to be less stat/rpg focused and more skill focused. There is not "loot" as much as there are pick-ups you get for gold, xp, etc and weapons which you pickup and drop as needed. Many of these systems will likely be expanded upon in the future and may have more depth added to them but plan doesn't appear to be farming for a sword with +100dps or dealing with gear scores. Think more along the lines of D&D where you might get a +3 great sword.
there is no progression at the moment. You can gain levels but they are largely cosmetic and the leveling curve likely isn't final. "Progression" will likely be more in the line of unlocks to cosmetics/pets/etc than direct power upgrades.
there is character customization. Upon entering the game you can edit various colors and hairstyles as you want whenever you want and you will have some starting gold which can be used to select and unlock a number of cosmetic items that are available for your armor/mask as well. UPDATE: 2/19/2020 So it's been some time and I'm still finding the game pretty enjoyable. Since the initial launch the devs have added some new mimic type enemies, some new room types to the endless dungeon, and have done their first overhaul on the skill/equipment system. Skills are now increased by looting trinkets, which in turn, allow you to wield weapons of higher levels. A teaser of some of the stuff planned for the overworld/non-dungeon areas was also posted to Discord including the first world boss they are working on. The camera system changes are coming, but have not yet been implemented mainly due to manpower and time constraints but are a priority. Last estimate I heard being tossed around was a few weeks. Overall, they have been updating the game at a regular clip and in doing so have kept the relatively short gameplay loop we have for the moment fresh as there's been something new or changed to check out every few days. I highly recommend joining the Discord if you have questions about the game or want to know more about it's status or look over the games roadmap.
Preface
Yes, I know the game is early access, yes I have considered the game is not in a complete final state, no I am not rating off "what the game could be" because it is way to early in development to make assumptions. Early access games are still products and you should expect to enjoy playing them in current state. I am rating based off current state. Also I do not have as many hours shown, there is a bug in game with the leaderboard that allowed steam to continue tracking time while the game was closed. The game was being sold now for funding and their funding has been met. So the game will continue to be developed and won't be swept under the rug as a failure. As far as early access games go, The Yellow King has been put out far behind others while still being playable.
The Good
- Developers are pretty involved with the playerbase and moderately listen to feedback, criticism, and suggestions. - Good premise, the idea of infinite dungeon crawling with a group of 6 or a 20 man guild is entertaining. Delving deeper and fighting bosses. - The game at this point is a simple, mindless, easy to play time waster . Not hard to put hours in even with all the flaws. However it is monotonous due to lack of content and balance. Currently plays as skip the enemies and search for "secret rooms" as that is the fastest way to progress. - Graphics wise its good looking but The Yellow King does not have its own unique style yet. It is nothing special because this is only a Unity3D game using mostly direct or modified assets from the Unity Asset Store. You look at it and you say "ya that is Unity". - The community discord which is what the developers use to connect with the playerbase has some gems of people in there. Mostly nice players that you can hop right in a group with.
The Bad
- The community on the discord is also garbage. There is too much white knighting for the game and sucking the Kool-Aid out of the developers "Johnson" for serious suggestions to be discussed. Too much "WhY dId YoU BuY iT iF yOu ArE gOiNg To CoMpLaInE aBoUt A eArLy aCcEsS gAmE" - The AI is broken, some enemies won't even acknowledge you, they will constantly clip through walls, the pigman boss will just backpedal away from you and some skeletons dodge roll around you better than a troll in PvP Dark Souls. - You can dodge roll, however unlike the skeletons, your dodge roll is useless. The roll does not give invincibility frames and very rarely lets you get out of the way of an attack. - Hitboxes are janked, some objects and enemies can not be hit by certain attacks and some attacks will phase through the enemy. - Camera is flawed. It is in a fixed position and is controlled by keyboard. Very stiff to use. Its suppose to be strategic and more old school but it just makes aiming ranged weapons very difficult as well as aiming with melee. Giving the feeling you have a lack of control over your character. Camera should be controlled by the mouse. - Enemy balance is poor, The developers are still trying to work what damage everything should do and how to scale enemy damage in the infinite dungeon. 20 floors out and a chest mimic can kill you in 6 shots. - The two currencies in the game as well as experience for leveling is random drops. Meaning some enemies will reward you with nothing. An enemy should be rewarding, if it does not drop currency it should give experience as a base value. Experience being a drop is ridiculous. In most games for killing an enemy that dropped nothing you could say "well least I got experience.". Here you can say "well that was a waste of time.". - Even the fundamentals of the game are subject to change. When the game hit the store it used a skill system you put runes into to be able to use higher level weapons. They removed that system and changed to a trinket system where now what weapon levels you can use is determined by the random chance of finding a trinket instead. Not like a looter game where you find something new, higher level you equip examples being Borderlands and Diablo. The trinket system is more "I want this weapon so now I got to spend hours looking for these specific trinkets so I can equip this weapon.". - They claim currently only 20% of mechanics and content are in the game. The other 80% is being planned, worked on and will be released gradually through the coming months. Of course early access games are not finished, but releasing a game at 20% is absurd. Even EA would have trouble doing that.
Conclusion
No, I don't recommend purchasing at current state. Not even to support the game, it has reached its funding goal. It will release and what it will release as will be what it is suppose to be, throwing more funding at it won't make it better. The game will not release F2P. It is B2P and they are still deciding on releasing a subscription model on top of that. Supporters will receive a lifetime subscription if they go that route. If not well you paid for something and will not receive it. Don't jump on that deal until the game is more finished and if they are clear if the subscription model will be implemented. If you don't want to purchase but still really want to try the game, do look on their facebook page "TheYellowKingGame" as giveaways are done there.

I liked this game from the start with the dungeon crawling treasure hunting. But with the new city and the new large dungeon the game took a huge step in the right direction of become a fleshed out game. It is fun to play solo or with a group. And with more updates coming soon it will be very interesting to see what this game will become.

I've been watching this game develop since before release, and was really interested. The visual style and action oriented combat is great, however the controls in this game are not great. No turning with your mouse unless you toggle it on but if you open a menu, you have to toggle it off, and then do it all over again. Not to mention the janky turning animation snapping for a second because I moved my mouse less than a millimeter. This wouldn't be a huge problem except the enemies move faster than you can turn, and your attack hit box is oddly small. and there is no crosshair with the bow and since you can't really aim with the mouse it makes it really awkward to use. All in all, I hope they create a more fluid and dynamic control scheme and increase players movement capabilities. From the amount of time I played, I can say that this game could be really fun if you can get over the controls.

I don't usually review games. Do not buy this game. It was not even close to being worth the $6 I paid at a 75% discount. Here is the reason: The controls are SO horrible-- possibly the worst of any game I have ever played. Other reviewers have mentioned the tank controls and their awkwardness, but they are seriously horrible if you have played any other 3D game. Maybe it will get better in the future; there seems to be potential and the devs seem pretty active, but why release content updates when one of the most basic parts of your game is so obviously bad? I can't imagine anybody playtesting this and saying "yeah, this is probably good enough for the general public."
