The Darkside Detective: A Fumble in the Dark Возможности

Feature List

• 7 unique cases, the likes of which you’ve never seen before (not a guarantee)

• Uses both pointing and clicking technology

• Music from Thomas O'Boyle, a totally-living composer, definitely not undead

• Photo-Realistic* Pixel Rendering (*Depends on your definition of photo-realism)

• 1 mail-in rebate per customer on exorcism services for hauntings resulting from play

• A brief recap of the events of "The Darkside Detective" for anyone who hasn't played it and doesn't want to

About the Game

Delouse your room with sage and pack up your travel-sized ouija board, it’s time to re-enter Twin Lakes - America’s 34th most haunted city. Join Detective McQueen as he puzzles his way through 6 chilling cases, risking life and pixelated limb to solve the macabre mysteries that plague the poor town.

Twin Lakes is a cursed city. Less cursed than say, “Demons are tearing it apart” but more cursed than “always loses its keys” or “often steps in puddles”. It’s roughly in the middle of the cursed scale, is what we’re trying to say.

Cursed enough that it’s a nuisance. Cursed enough that somebody has to deal with it…

That’s where The Darkside Detective comes in. Whenever you hear a bump in the night, feel a tingle up your spine, or smell something fishy, Detective Francis McQueen isn’t far behind.

No, he doesn’t smell of fish - it’s a phrase, come on...

Picking up after the events of The Darkside Detective, McQueen has to save his usually-present (in body, if not mind) sidekick Officer Dooley from the Darkside, so the two can get back to what they do best - investigating the city’s many strange, often paranormal, always paradoxical goings-on.

Join them in this frighteningly funny point-and-click adventure as they investigate six more standalone cases bringing them to a carnival, the local retirement home, an amateur wrestling circuit and even as far away as Ireland as they do what they can to keep the Darkside at bay.

I loved the first game and was more than happy to purchase the second. I loved the entire experience and missed hanging out with da bois! That being said, I noticed the creators ragged on themselves A LOT. I noticed there was always at least 1 self-deprecating comment towards themselves each chapter and it made me sad to see. So because of that, I will be hand typing and personally thanking the makers of this game, because they deserve lots of love and support. (And even if I'm just misunderstanding it all, they still deserve the thanks because what they made was amazing. SO I TAKE BACK NOTHING!!!!!!!!) (I also know that some of these are jokes, but regardless, I appreciate them being added. It adds a little fun.) Thank you, Spooky Doorway, for producing and developing this game. Thank you, Akupara Games, for publishing this game. Thank you, Treasa and Dave McCabe, for your many multiple talents and collaboration in designing this game. Thank you, Paul Conway, for your fantastic art. Thank you, Dr. D Banner, for your amazing Green Screen art (?). Thank you again, Dave McCabe, for your phenomenal writing. Thank you, Non-existent Spelling Wrangler, you were clearly there in spirit. Thank you, DJlakdj The Formless Form, for your consulting. Thank you again, Treasa McCabe, for your programming leadership. Thank you, Ben Marques Keenan, for your help programming. Thank you, Robert Megone, for your help programming. Thank you, Hannah Rose, for your help programming. Thank you, Seán O'Dá laigh-Pulford, for your help programming even as an intern. Thank you, Thomas O'Boyle, for your enamoring music and lyrical genius. Thank you again, Paul Conway for your immersing sound effects. Thank you again, Robert Megone, for your QA leadership. Thank you, Allan Quartermain, for your scouting of locations. Thank you, Dr. P Venkman, for your beautifully wrangled ghosts. Thank you, Kittehface Software, for your help in porting. Thank you again, Spookydoorway, for your aid in porting. Thank you, Akupara Games, for your support in making this game, specifically David Logan, Chris Nguyen, Alyssa Kollgaard, Richard Suchit, Miguel Moran, Joey Rintoul, Buddy Sola, and Justin McGinnis. Thank you, Kittehface Software, for your support in making this game, specifically Joel Burke, Jeremy Statz, and Travis Jones. Thank you, Duke McPrince, for your help in assisting Mr. McQueen. Thank you, Squire Helpington, for your aid in assisting Mr. Dooley. The biggest Thank you is given to Detective McKing, for directing the love scenes that were not present in this game. You truly carried the entire team through it all. Thank you, all you playtesters who helped check the game and aid the creators. And finally, thank you, all you who backed the kickstarter. Another individual thanks is given to Thomas Conway. May he find success in whatever challenges dare to approach him.

If you enjoyed the first Darkside Detective game, you'll be likely to enjoy this one. If you didn't enjoy the first Darkside Detective game, you probably won't. It really is as simple as that. The game starts out a bit slower than the first in terms of easily relatable jokes, but it picks up nicely as you go through the cases. Silly, irreverent, weird- just what I expected from this game. The puzzles are a bit more complicated in terms of steps needed to be taken (more back & forth), but none of them are terribly difficult. None of them are exceptionally easy easy either- you will need to think about things- but none of them are going to break your brain. Much. Some achievements are unmissable story-related achievements. Some are missable and require things to be done in a specific order or a specific number of times. Click everything, talk to everyone- repeatedly. hover over the entire scene to make sure you did not miss any interactable items- some of which may not appear until you visit a location again or again again. Some dialogue options and jokes only show up if you go back and talk to people every time you see them. Expect a lot of cheese. And politics- the devs do not hide their views, just like in the first game. But it is all very tongue-in-cheek. I recommend playing through without using a guide first- you may get some achievements without understanding what you did and how you got them. I found this enjoyable. There are guides to help if you missed achievements, or want a step-by-step walkthrough. I did need a guide to get the one achievement I had missed during my first playthrough. You can play each case separately- they are all stand-alones. You choose- step-by-step walkthrough if you only want to play each case once,or just playthrough and replay any cases that you missed an achievement in. 2 cases are shown on the case list that are not available to play yet,so there will either be an update or 2, or the devs enjoy trolling players, hard. Probably both. Good, silly game when you need some laughs. worth full price, for sure, IMHO.

A true successor to the first game. The stories are way way longer and puzzles are more complicated than before. Sometimes I was really stuck and needed hints. Just like the first game it has lots of dry humor in it.

If you're looking at A Fumble in the Dark, then you've likely already played the first game in the series. The second one, delivers on the promises of a sequel with an astonishing amount of cases and the same amazing humor. Get this game if it's cheap or better yet, gift it to a friend. Neither of you will regret it. PS: Don't feel bad for using walkthroughs for the game. Have the experience you want with it and don't let anyone else tell you differently

Overall, this is one of the games that made me wish steam had a more neutral option for reviews. That said, I definitely didn't enjoy this game as much as the first one. I'd suggest playing the original Darkside Detective if you have any interest. And honestly, frankly, skipping this one. I enjoyed it, but the puzzles in this game were a lot more of a pain in the ass than the original. In the first game, I wouldn't say I hit any major stumbling blocks in solving any of the cases. Most of the logic made sense, things were well foreshadowed in their use, and the layout of puzzles did a good job making sure you didn't have to backtrack too much. This game definitely is a step down in puzzle design. Several steps down in my eyes, honestly. There were multiple points in this game where I ended up completely stuck with no idea how to progress. Multiple times where I felt like I was pixel hunting for something that wasn't properly signposted, or a lack of context clues left me with zero idea how to proceed. I had to look up guides at points for over half the mainline cases. I don't like referring to guides if I can avoid it, I'd much rather solve puzzles in games from, well, within the game. Generally when I'm looking at a guide it's because I feel the game has failed in guiding me or signposting what it expects from me. For that reason, I can't really say this succeeds as a sequel to the original, which I never ran into that issue with. As for the actual story in the cases, it was nice. Good follow up to the original darkside detective. Good continued building of the setting. Jokes still quite amusing, and the tone of the game bang on to the original, props for all that. All that said, be warned the puzzles in this game are a step down from the first if you are going to get it.
