This game is SeGa: Sexy Garbage. It sucks, but I love it. If you come to this game expecting a 3D platformer, you're going to hate it. If you expected a Colors 2 or Generations 2, like the trailers implied, you're going to hate it. Sonic Forces is Sonic Forces, and should be treated like its own game instead of an imitation of previous titles. As such, it does plenty of interesting things, but languishes in many others. The story is crap – don't bother. It's incoherent, poorly-paced, and poorly-acted. What does the central plot device do? Whatever the plot demands. What is the motive of the big bad wolf? Who cares? Both are only explained in supplementary comics that weren't advertised and that hardly anyone has read. It tries being both a comedy and drama and fails at both. There are some good lines that establish or break up the tension, but they are far overshadowed by the abundance of needlessly melodramatic war talk and completely inappropriate quips. The best course of action is to just laugh with and at the absurdity of it all. Thankfully, there's an option to disable the frankly obnoxious in-game dialogue. Don't bother with Classic Sonic, either. The stages are surprisingly strong, but the physics model is neither particularly fun nor accurately replicates the momentum physics of the Genesis games. The developers seemed to have realized this, and Classic is the smallest part of the game. Overall, it's no worse than Generations, with both being awkward, broken, and half-baked. It's difficult for me to decide which I dislike less, but who really comes to this game for the classic stages, especially within the same year as a Classic-style game? As something to blow through to play something better, these stages are acceptable. What this game does well at, it's OK at. It's an easy game for children, casuals, and, oddly, speedrunners. The best way to play the game is as a high-score-oriented arcade platformer. The scoring system fabulously rewards players for swift gameplay, enemy destruction, and ring collecting alike. It's surprisingly enticing if you let it be. Something I haven't seen anyone comment on is how tight and responsive the controls are compared to previous 3D entries of the series. It's the one unequivocal improvement over Generations, and something that goes a long way towards the replay value. There is almost no input lag, and 2D effects trigger much quicker. Homing attacks, ranged attacks, and spin attacks just work and feel great to use. The Modern stages are a mixed bag. The 2D segments are the same as ever – if you oppose side-scrolling segments, these won't change your mind – and the rail-grinding is solid, being much more central to the gameplay, but the 3D segments are almost nonexistent. But if you get it out of your head that the camera must always follow the player character from behind, it's surprisingly fun. Due to the restricted way boost is obtained, now only through enemy destruction and designated power-ups, you'll be spending much of your time trying to maximize the boost available to use. It's an interesting and fun challenge, but only when there is a way to obtain it while staying on the move – which often isn't the case. The main issue with the level design is not so much difficulty, length, or linearity as it is pacing – scenes, sections, and setpieces pass by before they can be appreciated. The game as a whole seems to be in a rush to get itself over with. Where this game shines is with your custom character ("Avatar"). There is, of course, the joy of playing dress-up with your fursona, but there's more. The game also offers a surprising variety of abilities to choose from, those being seven different weapons ("Wispons"), each offering different methods of destroying enemies and unique mobility bonuses acquired by obtaining Wisp capsules, and each Avatar species offering a different ability (for a skilled player, the benefits are negligible). All the solo stages have interesting setpieces, quirky, but usually fun, level design, and at least one opportunity for clever use of the weapons. Combined with the tag team ("rental avatar") feature, some interesting pathways can be created with the different weapon abilities. The duo (called "tag team", though much more resemblant of tornado tag team) stages with Modern are the highlight of the entire game, and are rich with shortcuts and hidden pathways. They are of a reasonable length, balance all weapons reasonably, provide challenge-by-choice alternate routes, and encourage the player to think outside the box to maintain a pace. I don't know why the rest of the game wasn't up to the standards of these stages. Make your own opinions about the graphics. Technically, the Hedgehog Engine 2 is a sound, robust modern lighting engine with some limitations that are hidden quite well by the set design. Of the seven locales, I would say six demonstrate the engine effectively, with the game unfortunately ending on a drab, gray whimper in the Eggman Empire Fortress. I hope you like Green Hill and Chemical Plant, because they're back. Again. This is the fifth Sonic game in a row where Green Hill, or some undeniable expy, has appeared.<1><2> The Death Egg, modernized to go all-out on the Star Wars homage, also returns for some reason. The art direction is an odd mix of Lost World and Generations influences, essentially merging both Classic and Modern elements. It's not uncommon to see Classic-style and Modern-style springs in the same frame. There's a lot of misplaced geometric shapes, but also semi-realistic architecture and strong science-fiction inspiration. It's a coin toss if you'll like it or not. The music is subject to personal preference, though most agree that it's the best part of the game. I find the Modern tracks to be quite weak and uninspired, merging the series' trademark hard rock with a single blaring sawtooth synth. The Avatar's vocal drum 'n' bass is quite listenable, both inside the game and as an album to listen to by itself. Sure, the lyrics are corny beyond belief, but that's part of the fun. Something tells me they spent more money on the featured artists for these songs than the rest of the game – combined – but it shows. I also like the Classic stages' jazzy, fast-paced chiptune, clearly paying homage to the roots of the series' music, but the instrumentation is bizarre. To this day, Sega/Sonic Team have still not figured out how to program the Genesis' soundchips on modern hardware despite the abundance of free VSTs and trackers available on everything from iPods to Unix/Linux workstations.<3> Most of the bugs in the PC port seem to be patched by this point (June 2022). You have to be either particularly unlucky or doing something really weird to trigger one. I have not seen any since I first tried the PC port in 2018. Denuvo is still haunting the game, so let the buyer beware. This game is worth $10 on a sale and no more. It leaves you wanting more, but not in a good way. As a simple anthology of 30 fast-paced action stages with a polished dress-up minigame, it's an experience worth playing through at least once if you're new to the series or want to try something different. <1> Sonic 4, Sonic Generations, Sonic Lost World, Sonic Mania, Sonic Forces. <2> Sonic Frontiers will be the sixth. <3> Good news: Jun Senoue has recovered his Sega Genesis sound-programming capabilities to compose new music for Origins! Bad news: it's specifically designed to replicate the Windows GS soundfont.

Get Sonic Frontiers instead. Sonic Forces gameplay is mediocre, has terrible character writing, and can be beaten in 3 hours or less.
