Sniper Elite is a WWII franchise about marksmanship, stealth, and cunning. The levels are often large and open ended, allowing for different approaches when choosing how to deal with your tasks, whether that be assassination, sabotage, or something else. It's no surprise that this is a franchise ideally suited to VR, and we now finally have an installment exclusive to virtual reality users. Is it any good, though? The graphics of Sniper Elite VR are okay, but it comes across as a game in which some compromises were made in order to make it work on standalone HMDs like the Quest 2. As such, you're nowhere close to the visual fidelity of games like Half Life Alyx, but the graphics get the job done, I suppose. The first thing you might want to do is disable the lens flare option, as it looks hideous in its current implementation. Another low point in the visual department are the character animations, which feel stilted and jerky. The sound design is fine, from what I could tell. Weapons sound good, and the iconic slowed-down clang of the rifle's firing pin hitting the primer from previous Sniper Elite games is also present here. I don't really have much more to say on the matter, since good sound is something to be taken for granted. The most important element to get right in a Sniper Elite game is the gameplay. For context, previous Sniper Elite games have difficulty options that lets players choose how authentic they want the experience to be. On the easiest settings, players don't have to worry about bullet drop or compensating for the wind. These options are present in Sniper Elite VR too, which is good. The X-Ray kill-cam feature is also here, and it feels about the same as any of the other Sniper Elite games (which isn't a bad thing at all!). If the sniping feels good and authentic and you have the same X-Ray kill feature as before, then this is already shaping up to be a pretty good game! Well.. except for the fact that this game has a glaring flaw. Actually manipulating your weapons in this game is comically uncomfortable. On the Index, the fuse pin on the German stick grenade is extremely fiddly to reach, forcing you to bump your controllers together to pull it out (which can only be done with the grip pad, and not with the trigger, which is a trend you'll see with a lot of things in the game.). The Beretta pistol has a similar problem since it has no mag release button, in fact, none of the weapons have any functions bound to any of the buttons. Break-action shotgun? You have to reach down the barrels and pull it down, instead of using the latch that's SUPPOSED to be able to be operated with your thumb, or in the case of a VR shooter, your face button. You also can't grip the pistols with both hands like you can in many other VR shooters. SMGs like the Sten gun have comically high recoil for some reason, likely a remnant from the previous Sniper Elite games. This isn't even touching on the worst aspect of the controls, which is that your guns kind of just do whatever they feel like. If you try shouldering a sniper rifle and aiming down the sights, you'll quickly find that the gun's fighting you at every moment to throw off your aim. This is almost certainly a result of the game's virtual stock being poorly implemented, and yet it feels like there was no difference, regardless of which stock option I selected. What this means is that you have no chance of firing off quick snapshots, which a skilled VR shooter would be able to do in a game with better implementation, like Pavlov, or H3VR (Especially with the latters' newest implementation of rifle smoothing, which allows for accurate standing shooting at extreme ranges.). You're also gonna miss many deliberate shots because your gun jerked itself slightly to the side just before you pulled the trigger. In a game called Sniper Elite VR, having the rifles be this abysmal to handle is unacceptable. Without going into more detail, because I couldn't bear to play this game for more than 30 minutes or so, I'd say that the controls feel so bad that nothing else in this game can compensate for them. I haven't even mentioned things like the jankiness of the telekinesis grab in this game, or that the levels so far seem extremely small and limited (in a franchise that has had some really large levels in previous games.). That's why I can't recommend Sniper Elite VR.

I have played until the 5th mission, so I think I'm qualified enough to make the review. I have never played sniper elite (non vr) before so I bought this without any previous expectation. So from what I tried so far, sniper VR is not only a game about sniping, it has variety of other guns too (hand pistol, machine gun/smg, and grenade). And each of the gun type have their own variety too, like u can use the ordinary hand pistol or later u will get the silenced hand pistol (sorry I'm not into gun, so I couldnt remember the exact model/type). The sniping is really2 satisfying, and I really really recommend to turn on the FULL KILL CAM. It's very cool and satisfying to see ur bullets flying and penetrate the enemies. Other guns are not so satisfying, but they have their own purposes. The early missions u could prioritize on sniping, while on later missions, I feel that the game shifts to stealth game. U really2 rewarded if u could keep the stealth, and it would be much harder when the enemy alerted and all come to u. Because of the nature of stealth game, the later missions feel much much longer than the early missions. Oh and prepare to crouch alot in the later missions, because (like I said) it became a stealth game, and u wont be able to keep the stealth if u just stand there advertising ur body to the enemies. So it's good to train ur feet too (or just make ur feet pain). The reload every shot is a bit annoying, but I guess the real life is like that, and I could live with it. My friend said that later missions u could have a rifle that wont require reload every shot, but I havent got it yet. What is hard is when u have to reload the hand pistol or smg. Until now I couldnt get used to to reload it, and if it happened to be out of bullet in front of enemies, I'm dead meat. Some people dont recommend the game for things that I dont really experience/not find it annoying. Let me cover it a bit : - grenades mechanic is bad => yes, it's not immersive. U would be a fool to throw it urself, when the mechanic asked u to pull the trigger to aim the grenades and release the trigger to throw it. it's not immersive but at least we could target the place correctly. I hope the dev could change it that after we target it, maybe we throw it ourselves so there would be a sense of immersive at least - weird ballistics. bullets fly like stones. you have to aim upper even in close ranges lol, wind affects even in buildings. => i dont experience this at all. i think the bullet goes straight to where I aim and not falling at all. I tried to find if there might be an option to turn on that made it like this, but I couldnt find it. So I dont know, maybe the dev have fixed it ? - interaction with objects are bad => yeah this is true. most of time, it's so hard to get a drop gun. u have to aim on it, and then get it to fly to u (like half life alyx but worse). Devs should make us able to just pickup object and no need for the gravity hand like this. - stealth is weird, for some reason you almost blind when you are in cover => this might be the vignette. I turned it off right away when I just play cause I dont like vignette, and I never experienced this, but yeah it's there for other people, I seen it on some videos on youtube. - AI is stupid, enemies don't hear gunshot next room, alarm clears in 3-5 seconds, they dont chase u right away, and after not seeing u for about 5 secs they forget about u => well yeah.. I think this is deliberate ? the stealth is hard enough even with this mechanic. If all the enemies rush to u after they alerted, or if they only forget about u and the alarm only clears after like 10 minutes, then I wouldnt want to play this at all. Because it's very easy for the enemies to spot u, and if they gangbang u, u wouldnt last 5 seconds, not with the reload mechanics of the guns. This is not crisis vrigade, here u put down the enemies 1 by 1 slowly and ASAP (As Stealthily As Possible) not shooting like rambo. - even ladder climbing is done bad. Camera jumps every time you grip next crossbar. => umm nope. climbing is ok enough for me. - easy to get motion sickness => nope. though I have vr legs, but it's not really good. I tend to get motion sickness when playing game with bad motion like rigs, or when riding a car like on thief simulator. But here, I dont feel motion sickness at all. so, all in all, I really recommend this game. It has some flaws like the stupid gravity hand (hard to pickup objects) and weird grenade throw mechanics, but the fun is far more than its flaws. if u want to see the real gameplay, this is me playing the 5th mission : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8UZSPfplmck

TLDR: Fix the gun controls! This game is a complete disappointment. This game has a lot of potential but it falls on its face every time it takes a step.  I have enjoyed the Sniper Elite series and looked forward to this game being fun.  I had read reviews that the game was difficult and didn't control well.  I chalked that up to the reviewers having not spent much time in other VR games.  There are times when I will read about a game and realize that the review has spent all of two hours in VR and are not accustomed to how the games handle. This game handles bad, really bad.  It feels like the people making the game had only seen Half Life Alyx.  The Devs idiotically tried to implement a "Gravity Glove" style pickup mechanic which I bet they thought was "cool" and "added something to the game play".  What would have helped is making it so the player could actually pick up something in the game.  The pickup mechanic just doesn't work well and half the time I end up trying to pick up something on the floor and then I have a grenade in my hand that the game thought I was trying to pick up. What works in games is letting players simply bend down a pick something up with a grip button on the controller. It's simple and lets the players enjoy the game and not get frustrated at it. The game is amazingly strict about the play boundaries.  You would think I mean the guardian system but no.  The game freaks the fuck out every time you get too close to a wall or crate.  You get too close, the game goes black in the headset and says return to the play area.  The odd thing is, I'm in my play area just trying to crouch behind a crate for cover but no the game says I'm not playing it correctly and has to punish the player for it.  It was really annoying when I was not moving at all but the game kept telling me I was not in the play space. Or when your trying to get to cover but your shoulder clips though an invisible wall and now you can't see anything. If your going to do this to your players, allow an option for that to be removed, it breaks immersion and makes the game just about unplayable. The menu is one of the dumbest things I've seen in a VR game.  The main menu comes in the form of a notebook or journal that's grafted to your left hand.  Someone in a conference room must have been like, "You know what's overdone?  Simple, easy to read, and concise menus.  We need to think outside the box and give our users something new and amazingly dumb to use to interact with the game."  Thank little baby Jesus, yes the christmas one, that the only time you have to use that crappy menu is only on the main screen and you can hit pause to use a real menu. What this game needs is to improve its crap controls.  Hey Rebellion, have someone show you a real VR game like Onward or Pavlov and just copy how those guns handle.  Rebellion, also you need to sit down and think about realism vs play-ability.  What is in the game is neither and the game suffers greatly for that.  Onward and Pavlov have bolt action sniper rifles that don't drift out of your hands for no reason.  Too many times I've grabbed the rifle off my shoulder in game and it's sideways in my hand.  This is just so surprising that a well known PC game's entry into VR is done so poorly.  It's so disappointing to find the core of the game doesn't work.

Want a good, immersive VR sniper game? don't buy this, the controls are awful, no hiding places if you want to go in stealth, the guns have more drop than the grenades (not a joke) and the fact rebellion didn't fix this in 9 months makes it worse also good luck trying to aim having to re-adjust your sniper grip every time you re-chamber a bullet, if your looking for an immersive campaign VR shooter, don't buy this.

you can literally throw a pistol further than it will fire, reloading is a pain because the ammo pouch is on the opposite side to your hand and moves if you turn, rifles have no range and either the bullets are made of feathers or the game takes place during a hurricane because on realistic settings the bullets veer off to the side almost immediately after leaving the barrel, levels are too short and are way too linear for a sniper elite game overall just not a good sniper elite game.

I bought this game at -50% and I felt like I had thrown my money towards a student made alpha of a game they abandoned because they passed the class already. The developers of this game clearly don't understand VR. It is like the Wii version of any decent FPS years ago. Dumbed down both graphically and in the sense of level design. VR feels like a gimmick in this game. Look at the previous Sniper Elite games. They allow you to sneak around and decide when to attack. This time the levels are linear, graphics are very bad and the handling of your equipment is awful. You want to enable trigger to use the bolt? Okay, you now use the bolt with trigger. Except you still use grip as well so grabbing the gun is harder because the hand grabs the bolt instead. You're allowed to cycle the bolt half way for no reason or to empty your guns magazine if you want to but the game locks the bolt back when the gun is empty to make it extra stupid/confusing. Your hand passes through everything, audio mixing between narration and backround audio could use some work and the main voice actor is used in such a clumsy manner. Tutorial messages don't orient to where you're looking either. Game suddenly pauses and blurs everything around you but you need to start doing pirouettes to find where the actual tutorial message is at. It is crazy to see big publishers and experienced studios get body slammed by indie studios with maybe a handful of developers when it comes to VR games.

I'm not going to lie, shooting someone's testes in half in VR is both uncomfortable and oddly satisfying. It was an accident, but the slow-motion replay made it clear that one ball after another was pierced with the same bullet, just as you would imagine. I believe you can find that specific moment somewhere in the introduction level in this gameplay: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fUJkGsby7cM Anyway, now my review for the game, The gameplay of Sniper Elite VR largely resembles that of the nonVR versions. You play as a sniper who has enemies innumerable enemies around him with spears with long sniper bullets and at the same time must cover a route, albeit in one piece. Oh, before I forget again, during my first session in the game I didn't realize that you had to use, or can use the focus. I looked directly through the scope without using the focus, the first level then went so smoothly that I just didn't think of a tool. Now I noticed later that in recorded gameplay you don't get to see an image through the scope when you don't use the focus, in the game you see everything clearly through the scope. Check out some more shots here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CthFSs2KZpI The controls in Sniper Elite VR are in any case very good, even without using the focus you could in principle shoot down a lot of enemies and you still feel a certain stability with the weapon while aiming. You can easily read about this game that players experience motion sickness, but I didn't notice that at all. Apart from the sniper rifles, the other weapons are still useful despite the fact that the enemies are usually quite far away, but take into account possible strong recoil from the machine guns. Sniper Elite VR offers the same beautiful experience that we know from the series, but in virtual reality. Using the sniper rifles and the accompanying killcam is very satisfying, the missions are interesting enough to do more often and the story is interesting and also very entertainingly informed.

In all the VR games I have played, I believe this game has the worst controls ever. Playing with the Index controllers, I was constantly dropping every gun I touched. In order to pick up weapons, you must grab and magically flip the weapon towards you. You cannot remap the grab function and trying to do this with the Index controllers made the game almost unplayable for me. I spent the majority of this game standing around trying to flip guns into my hands and then trying to place both hands on the guns, only to keep dropping them over and over. The reloading process is also very awkward. The rifle scope also drifts a lot and holding it steady is pretty difficult. Enemies inside the scope are also blurry and hard to see. There are also constant black screen warnings if you step outside the play area. Overall, this is a very poor VR experience. I'll just stick to playing the non-VR Sniper Elite games.

Not going to recommend for now because there are a few issues with the game that ruin the experience. The first thing I noticed was that my vr hands were about four centimetres higher than my actual hands in real life (im using a rift s), which obviously was very distracting especially when trying to aim a sniper... this is Sniper Elite yanow.... Also there is a constant weapon smoothing to help while aiming but it is way too much there needs to be an option that allows you to lower it or disable it when you are not aiming because when I shifted my aim with a pistol or any other weapon it took the game like half a second to keep up because of the smoothing, this make it very hard to shoot things. When using the weapons it was very challenging because it didn't even feel like I was holding them because of the hand offset and the smoothing, it was like they were floating above my hands, i would have to constantly let go and regrip the weapon to get comfy and then it would just start shifting again floating out of my hands really weird. Weapon scopes are very dark and its very hard to see through them, i have to have my hands jammed in my face to be able to make the scope bigger because of the hand offset and the weapon floatyness. Also reloading and bolting the weapons is a bit jank and needs to be smoothed out. Im sure there will be a path but i just cant recommend when my weapons are floating around the place.
