RPG in a Box lets you easily turn your stories and ideas into games and other interactive experiences! As its name suggests, it contains everything necessary for doing so, all packaged together "in a box". The software is designed with a fun, beginner-friendly approach in mind as to not require any programming or modelling knowledge, while still providing a wide range of customization and openness. You can export your game to a standalone format for Windows, Linux, and MacOS, allowing others to play it without needing to own RPG in a Box!

While RPG in a Box is constantly being expanded with new features and functionality, you can refer to the list below for a general, high-level look at what's currently possible in the engine.

Voxel Editor

Build tiles, objects, and characters from 3D pixel blocks (i.e. voxels) and easily animate them with the editor's frame-based, stop-motion animation system. Importing from MagicaVoxel (.vox) and Qubicle (.qb) is also supported.

Map Editor

Create grid-based worlds with the tiles you've built, then bring them to life by adding interactive NPCs and objects using the editor's intuitive navigation and interaction system.

Scripting

Set up and trigger in-game events with the visual, node-based script editor. Simply drag and drop the desired actions (no programming knowledge required), or manually code "quick scripts" using Bauxite, the custom, Lua-like scripting language.

Dialogue

Write conversations for your NPCs using a visual, flowchart approach similar to that of the script editor. Branching dialogue is supported via player choices and condition checking.

Camera System

Choose from three available camera presets (standard, isometric, and first-person) or tweak the settings to create a custom camera. Stage dynamic cutscenes for your game using the engine’s flexible camera scripting system.

Combat Systems

Choose from tactical turn-based, real-time, or menu-driven turn-based combat, with more options and customization to come in future updates.

UI Editor

Design themes and customize the appearance of many other interface elements such as the inventory, main menu, and credits roll. The powerful widget system allows you to easily create unique mechanics for your game.

Item Editor

Define items for the player to find in containers or earn through the completion of tasks. Attach scripts to trigger effects for potions and other consumable items.

Sound FX Generator

Generate fun, retro-style sound effects using the built-in tool based on Dr. Petter’s SFXR.

I haven't spent too much time with this as of yet, but I'm immediately impressed with how polished and easy to use it is. It really is an all-inclusive system for making some really neat voxel games and it shows as a labor of love. I know this is going to one of my favorite game engines and the price is extremely reasonable for its capabilities. Highly recommended.

This is great software. It is a must for anyone who wants to learn how to make games. Even if you don't use it to make an entire game, it is brilliant for prototyping ideas. You have everything in the one package.

I'm really amateur when it comes to coding, and I've tried plenty of engines and software over the years as a way to learn and explore game design. But RPG in a Box is the first time I've actually been able to dive into this kind of stuff without feeling overwhelmed, lost, or experiencing any real barriers. Because this software has basically everything you need to make a game within it - a voxel editor, sound effects generator, and built-in editors for stuff like items, inventories, shops, dialogues, battles, UI, systems for real time, turn-based, or roguelike gameplay, quality of life like predefined animation names, along with easy-to-read documentation - I can mess around with art and scripting without worrying about other software or spending a long time making the basics. I really can't overstate how great this helps with learning and workflow with everything being self-contained. This is also the first time I've actively wanted to ignore visual scripting and go straight to writing code. Not that the visual code is bad, but the software makes coding super easy. It's got all it's available functions next to the code in a list with helpful icons, so it's extremely easy to read and explore what you can do. The UI in general works super well and is easy to follow, especially compared to some other software like this. I can't comment yet how easy or difficult it is to get the software to do things outside of it's intended use or how nice this software is to work with if you're experienced with engines like Unity or Godot, but I can at least easily recommend it to beginners or people like me who love messing around with this kind of stuff and being creative, regardless of intention to make a commercial product. P.S. The discord is super helpful too!

Coming from somebody who has spent countless hours in unity. RPG in a box feels like a breath of fresh air, the way that it allows you to create your rpg without knowing much about programming. The demo itself is what got me to try out this engine and from then on the rest was history. I look forward to whats to come with this program.

Right now this software is for those that have a story in mind that they want to tell, or create voxel assets. I am more then willing to change my review after some features have been added to this software. There is no Skill/Spell Editor, something as simple as creating a skill that damages an enemy and reduces it's defense is not possible without programming in a script to do so. You can not easily create your own spells. There is no Status Editor Currently any states such as Blinded, Poisoned, Stunned and so on have to be programmed into the game by yourself. Something like a Status Editor to streamline this would go a long way. The Combat Editor is as bare-bones as you could imagine, there is currently only one damage type and one defense type. There is no magic damage, or even mana points to spend. There is no healing over time or damage over time options available to you out of the box. If you want to create any sort of combat beyond "I use my weapon to attack one creature" without writing your own lines of code I would wait until there are more options available. I understand this is an indie project, and I look forward to the day I can leave a more positive review.

RPG in a Box has superficially cool tools. The voxel editors and tile maps are genuinely neat, and it was slick being able to make my own animations by following the tutorial. But basic RPG staples, such as defining your own stats and implementing skills and spells are totally opaque, and seem entirely absent from the in-game help. There is a "stats" editor, but there's no information at all about how it is used, and disturbingly the stats editor is described as a "WIP" despite this being out of early access. Fumbling around I eventually saw you could attach custom properties through a buried button in the model editor, but this seems to be a really weird place to put stats. Shouldn't you be able to assign character stats through the stats editor? A lot of critical details just seem to be completely missing. You'd expect the "combat editor" to allow you to change how the combat calculations work... but as far as I could see it didn't. How do I change to-hit calculations? It's not documented. The tutorials will teach you how to animate a pickup so that it looks like it floats, but it won't teach you how to make your PC cast a fireball or make cold resistance. What's the point of being able to choose between real time and turn based combat if you can't do anything? Why would anyone want to play an RPG with two stats? Most of the positive reviews I expect come from people who are more engaged with the community and know where to go to find community tutorials and so forth, or maybe they're so focused on presentation (which RPGIAB does well) that they don't really care about about gameplay. While using it, I just wish I could use Godot. The whole thing felt like a skin overlaying Godot and limiting from using that superior set of tools. I don't know if the developer just needed some money quick (I can relate) but the poor state of the documentation the WIP nature of some critical features really show that this is a product still deep in early access.

Severe lack of features. If you want to add skills, magic, armor, or anything more complex than walk forward and hit then this is not the game for you. Some features are still WIP despite the game releasing fully. Also this was made in Godot which is free on Steam and better overall so why not skip the middleman?

You get a fun little idea for a game you would like to make, you download Unity or Godot, you give up after a week or a month because your little idea takes countless hours of effort to even set up. RPG in a Box is a perfect engine which helps bring these fun little ideas to life without having to spend too much time worrying about the backend code, or spending hours on learning a new programming language. It has it's limitations, but these can often be a source of inspiration. As an example, in about 25 hours with the engine I was able to create procedurally generated maps, which is not something that is advertised or built into the engine. The developer is extremely active on various social channels, and clearly a lot of love and effort is being continuously put into this program. If you want to create a RPG in a voxel style, or challenge yourself in a fun engine with it's limitations, this software is a wonderful choice.

I have been following the development of this project on Twitter etc, and have been saying to myself "I should definitely check that out" for some time. I've spent a grand total of 2 hours in the engine/tool, and have made a car drive around a desert, and am very inspired to jump into making an isometric RPG! I'm a Unity developer by trade, and am really, really, really appreciating the love and attention to workflow that's gone into this RPG in a Box. Things like character input, menus, pathfinding, inventory management, animation, asset creation, transparent materials...it's just... there?! It is exactly what it promises, in the box! :) Then we go onto the visual scripting - it looks simple yet powerful - I can follow exactly what things should do in plain English! As a non-coder I could follow that, and it's a fun process for me to think visually again. The workflow of making assets to make a game is new to me, I'm not sat designing system after system, I'm just creating cute 3D models, a map, some logic and pressing go! :) Honestly, when I was a kid, this was what I thought game dev would be like- and this does output a serious game with serious features... just very very intuitively! :) I'm making games in Unity, but I have wanted to make an RPG for some time, knowing fully I'll never realise it due to the complexity - not without dumping my current projects and devoting more time than I have. I think that's changed, and I'm really enjoying the process of creating in RPG in a Box! :)
