About the Game

Features:

  • Unique visuals inspired by medieval manuscripts and medical books.

  • Hyper satisfying physical interactions with ingredients and equipment.

  • Sandbox style gameplay where you have many different avenues available, and it’s up to you to figure out the best way to complete each task.

  • Sell your potions to the townsfolk while roleplaying as a noble artisan, a greedy weasel, an occult dark master, or whomever else you may wish to be!

Work with all sorts of ingredients

Leaves, flowers, berries, roots, fruits, minerals, and a plethora of mushrooms are at the ready for your mortar and pestle. Just like espresso, the fineness of the grind matters!

Learn the art of potion making

Concoct your potion plan. Grind ingredients and carefully mix them in your cauldron. Heat the coals. Boil and stir. Add the base: water, oil, or… something else. Congrats on your first potion! Was it easy to learn? Now try mastering it!

Experiment and invent new recipes

Carefully plan your route via the Alchemy Map to combine different effects. Be mindful of common sense: you won’t find a market for a poisonous healing potion… right? Or would you?

Sell potions

Every day customers will come to your store looking for solutions to their problems. You will face consequences depending on what you decide to sell them. Attract guilds, befriend notable figures (or feud with them), gain riches and influence - and one day, you may even decide the fate of the whole town.

Buy ingredients or grow your own

Every alchemist needs ingredients. You can buy them from traveling merchants: it can be pricey, but successful haggling may save you some coin. Or you can just grow your own!

Get creative with customizing

Want to give a special appearance to your best potions? Go ahead! Change bottle shape, label type, icon, and colors. You can even give it a custom name and label description. Carefully arrange your unique potions to showcase them on your shop’s shelves and tables… or carelessly throw them around - we’re not gonna tell you what to do, just have fun!

I was initially going to write a long review but I know barely anyone reads those and I really want to reccomend this game. What few problems I have with this game are planned to be fixed in the up-coming patches. It's worth purchasing in its current state, and I have great hopes for the future. 10/10

The game is relaxing and enjoyable. It gets difficult when merchants don't sell the one ingredient you need, four times in a row, so you have to make substitutions that actually work better than the ingredient I wanted anyway, so you end up buying all you can of that and have to redo all the recipes that you now realize are very costly of the previously used ingredient. Improvements that could be made would be: * Instead of waiting for merchants to come to you, they should be available all the time (with more expensive/less wares as to not remove the challenge) * People need more reasons, preferably with varying words and personalities if possible, to purchase potions so they seem more human-like rather than not. * I have noticed that customers don't request multi-effect potions at all. I think it's a great mechanic of the game to be able to mix potions around. And obviously these potions would be much more rewarding than regular single-effect potions, seeing as they are much harder to make and need more specific recipes. * A quest system would be nice. I know there is the "Alchemists path" but I mean one that goes through customers for larger requests. Like 10 potions of healing. Then you get time to make whatever is requested which increases/decreases depending on difficulty and materials cost of what was requested. * Larger requests. This would not use the quest system if implemented, but rather just be a few potions to get right away. This would also require balancing but it becomes a little boring to know they only want one potion. That's about it for the feedback. Overall the game is nice. Would like some different songs as it gets kind of repetitive to listen to the same track again and again. Also, the game should warn you when clicking the "new game" button.

It's a good game, for a few hours. For now, the game is too empty to be really enjoyable. At first, the game is exciting, you learn to make potions, discover new potions by exploring the map, new paths to move through the map... But at the 3-4 hour mark, you get to a point where you are just making the same potions for the same clients all over again. And then alchemy comes, i consider it could be a refreshing and fun mechanic, but for now it has huge design flaws. The first recipes you make are pretty simple and easy, the same potions you made before, but with interesting and different combinations, the problem comes with later recipes. The late game recipes are obtained in the point where you have already done everything else, and don't offer anything new to the game. Each recipe can take about 11 potions, each one of them increasingly harder to make, taking up to four hours to make all the recipes. It really feels like WORKING to progress, as you are still doing the same thing you have been doing since the beginning, but without anything new, and a much higher difficulty (difficulty here meaning more tedious work and more time consuming). Gameplay really needs something new at midgame, get another way to make potions different from moving on a map, other way to process ingredients, but not the same over and over. And the potions you make at the alchemy table doesn't work for anything else, are potions designed just to be hard to make (or easy, depending on the difficulty). They could be potions that you could save for certain clients, for example: 1.- The guy that wants to have creative dreams wants a sleepy potion or a hallucination potion, a 3+2 combination of the two is more valuable, if the alchemy table asked you for that potion, you could save it for that client. 2.- The guy that wants to bypass or fly from an enemy needs a invisibility potion or a flying potion, same thing before, the progress could help your gameplay insted of making it tedious. To end, i must say this bad rating is temporary, i enjoyed the game, but i got really burned out at the end. It was way too early to release the game, i want to see what it ends up becoming. It looks ASTONISHING tho, the art and the way you interact with everything is unique, but it feels like they had put too much time on the artistic part, and very little on the game design and gameplay part.

As of 5/29: If there's one thing that Potion Craft absolutely nails; it's the weird 'fuzziness' of cooking. There's this really lovely push and pull with trying to nail a particular potion where you'll timidly add dashes of water, or throw in a handful of extra ingredients just so you can tap the marker into the right spot. For those of us who look at others in bewilderment when they smack their lips after tasting anything and go 'Needs just a pinch of rosemary' or 'Hmm, little too much thyme'; I think this game really does a great job of providing that experience. Beyond this, there's definitely a really interesting core to the game. You pick up random ingredients from your backyard, and then use them solve the various requests from the townsfolk who come to bother you about solving their problems. Something I particularly enjoyed was the hint of a story system, wherein you could make good vs. evil decisions about helping some of the townsfolk, and I'd love to see more and more of how this impacts the game. It's early days yet so I can't say I saw a real impact to my choices to help two farmers wage a war of poison and fire on each other, but there's promise here. There are some tiny critiques I would add however. So much of the system of discovering new recipes is from just wandering around the cauldron map, throwing random things in until you chance upon a recipe. Experimentation like that can be great, but I think a limiter of some sort (Cauldron can only take X ingredients) would be neat. It'd make some of the more expensive ingredients more valuable for clearing more of the map, and could be another money sink in the game's economy for upgrading your cauldron size/ flask stability. To go back to the cooking analogy, at some point throwing more ingredients in isn't going to teach you anything more, nor is it going to miraculously result in something that anyone will want. The game's also a little thin on content. While there's a game of legendary recipes to play against in the background, for the most part you'll be doing the same thing of creating potions and haggling with people to give you more money to get more ingredients so you can create more potions... That's not to say the engine isn't solid, but I feel like there's room to grow. For instance, I'd love to see more client requests be answerable with multiple solutions. In some rare cases, I was able to answer the client request with either potion A or potion B, but the majority of the game are clients coming in and saying 'I want potion A, and I'm giving you a bad review if you don't have it'. It'd be even more interesting still to let players just answer requests however they want to, with the ramifications being far deeper. Examples include: * Someone wanted to drug their husband with a deep sleep so they could have an affair; why not give them poison instead? * Someone wanted a potion of light to explore a cave, but all I had was an explosive potion. * Someone wanted a potion to help with date night, so I handed them a berserker potion. I realise at this point, some may be pointing out that I should just go play VA11-HALL-A or the board game 'Bargain Quest' (which is fantastic by the way), but I think there's some interesting spaces that could be explored here. All in all, potion craft is a great sleepy game for a rainy weekend. If the game didn't deepen any more than it's present state, I'd still recommend it but I'm keen to see if the dev's take this concept further still. Personally, this is my window into a world of culinary/ alchemical expertise where I get to pretend that I can tell if the pot needs to be a little more diluted, or that a splash of dried mushrooms would push things to greatness; and I'm here for it.

This game used to be wonderful, honestly, it's still great. Problems with the game arise when the dev team adds new content. Their development philosophy is "chill instead of min/maxing" – when they say this it means “Progression doesn’t matter, and things will be just as difficult and tedious in the end game as they are early game.” This is easy to see when looking at ingredients. Simple recipes used to be easy to make and, there was a method to the madness. Now anything you want to do is costly and time consuming. You can’t just save up money and resources then mess around and discover things. If you wanted to play a game that gives a good sense of progression (Doesn’t make you do tedious things constantly / Allows you to experiment and have a good time) you won’t find that once they leave early access.
