OUR STUDIO'S NEW GAME IN STEAM EARLY ACCESS

About the Game

This is an intense strategy board game in a steampunk world of corrupt capitalist gremlins who compete for money, political power and prestige. Save and invest, steal and extort, arrest and get arrested – in single-player and multiplayer, with ranks and ladders, team mode and spectator mode. Featuring seasonal content updates, regular tournaments, item drops, full support of Steam Community Market – and more!

HOW DO YOU PLAY THIS GAME?

Gremlins, Inc. is designed for up to 6 players, in multiplayer or in single-player mode (with AI bots). Each player has 6 cards on their hand (replenished from the same deck) and uses them either to move around the playing field or to perform different game actions. There is a lot of interaction with other players, and duels are significantly different from 3-player or 4-player games. You can play until a certain score limit, or until agreed number of rounds, or for time limit. The game offers both custom and ranked sessions (with matchmaking by rating).

CAN YOU PLAY IN TEAMS OR JUST WATCH?

Yes, you can! In addition to custom sessions (where you define the parameters of the session and may optionally set filters for those who can join you) and password-protected private sessions (so that you and your friends can play undisturbed), the game offers team mode (2x2, 3x3, or 2x2x2) with teams of human players and/or AI bots. Gremlins, Inc. also supports a built-in spectator mode, which allows you to watch sessions of other players right from inside of the game, sharing your emotions with players and other spectators through messages and emoticons.

CAN YOU PLAY THIS GAME OFFLINE?

Certainly! When you buy this game, you get 2 products in your Steam Library: Gremlins, Inc. – the edition that is playable online in single-player and multiplayer modes, with full support of item drops and Steam Workshop; and Gremlins vs Automatons – the edition that is playable offline in single-player mode, without any connection to our server whatsoever.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO PLAY ONE SESSION?

The game offers different session settings to make them fit your available time, and single-player mode offers automatic SAVE / LOAD function at every turn so that you can take a break whenever you want (while multiplayer mode offers re-connect functionality as long as the session is still in progress). A quick duel for 20 score points with a fast timer can finish in under 20 minutes, while a 4-player session for 60 rounds can last for 2 hours or more.

SHORT-TERM AND LONG-TERM STRATEGIES?

There are different types of cards in the game (permanent, regular, secret and criminal) and as each card can be used either to move or for action, you will develop both short-term and long-term strategies for making the most out of where you are, and what you currently have in your hand. Normally, you spend half of your game time accumulating resources and building the foundation for the end-game, and the other half trying to control the progress of your opponents (stealing, arresting, initiating player conflicts, and so on). The more you play, the more new strategies you will discover – especially when combining the effects of several cards played in a combination.

MAKE DECISIONS, PLAN YOUR MOVES

  • This is an intense strategy game: make decisions at every round! Plan your moves, then adjust to the actions of the other players and new cards drawn.
  • The design of the playing field and the multiple layers of optional features (that you can turn on or off, as you wish) allow for a variety of strategies. The more you play, the more roads to victory you discover, using a combination of features based on the particular setup of the session.
  • The game offers a diverse resource system that allows for many comeback chances even after you're robbed or arrested (or both). With score, money, votes, malice, income and bribes, the tension often remains until the very last round.
  • The multilayer mode of the game features a system of ratings, ladders and ranked sessions: compete in a specific league, and take part in the regularly organised tournaments with over 1 000 participants. A system of anonymous masks allows everyone to compete on equal terms in a ranked session.
  • Every season since its release in 2016, the game receives FREE content and feature updates (balancing changes, new cards, new in-game items, new music). We are committed to continue developing this product – based on player feedback!
  • Additionally, the game offers over 10 single-player challenges plus the option to create custom single-player sessions with different settings and a different mix of AI bots.
  • Finally, there's the team mode where victory is determined not only by strategic skill, but also by communication and coordination of each team, which is an entirely different layer of game mechanics.

FACTS & FIGURES

  • 201 cards in the main deck (171 of them – unique): permanent, regular, secret and criminal, each with a hand-drawn steampunk illustration; with each Season update, we keep adding several new cards to the deck.
  • 40 events in the Misfortune deck: these are the special events triggered at certain moments in the game, and may affect the current standing of all players to a significant degree, especially when used on a specific opponent.
  • 6 special Chaos Cards: this is an optional set of cards available to every player in the game; turn them on or off to change the dynamics of the session.
  • 12 sets of Character Abilities: another optional feature that brings to the game special game mechanics unique to each character type; playing with these makes different competing strategies even more pronounced.
  • 11 original locations: the Office, the Plant, the Dump, the Marketplace, the Inferno, the Jail, the Casino, the Court, the Treasure, the Bank and the Astral Plane; and 7 original spot types: Risk, Gamble, Police, Income, Bribe, Misfortune and Tribune.
  • 2 distinctly different playing fields: The Clockwork Town and The Clockwork Colony, each offering strategic challenges of their own.
  • Finally, the game took us three years to develop from concept to full release, and we're still committed to continue supporting the community through development of new content. There are currently over 150 000 players of Gremlins, Inc. on Steam from all over the world, including USA, Russia, China, Japan, UK and France. Collectively, players already launched several millions game sessions!

FINALLY, WHO ARE THE GREMLINS?

You think that’s just a pocket watch in your hand, a watch that’s a bit late because you keep forgetting to wind it up? No, no and no – you couldn’t be further from the truth! What you carry around is a whole gremlin town packed into this tiny mechanism: a town with its own bank, its own casino… and even its own jail! Gremlins are the microscopic creatures that inhabit any mechanism that they can possibly infiltrate. If a watch or a telescope malfunctions, then it’s probably due to gremlins who took up a residence there.

More than anything in life, gremlins value money, political power and prestige: prestige that one can claim after completing some sort of a grandiose engineering project. Aside from working on their own projects, gremlins mostly spend their time preventing other gremlins from building something even more grandiose. This they achieve through bribing officials and lying to the electorate, as well through stealing from their competitors - and outright arresting them.

A DISCLAIMER (JUST IN CASE)

We felt it important to note that Gremlins, Inc. is not a free-to-play game. Also, this is not a CCG or TCG: you do not need to buy boosters or packs; in every session the game offers the same deck to every player, and everyone's chances are equal.

OUR DLC POLICY

We released Gremlins, Inc. on Steam in Early Access at the end of 2015. Since then, we released over 100 game updates as we continue to add more content and more features as well as improve the overall player experience.

This is what we typically add to the game with the regular free updates of the game:

* new features and new mechanics

* new cards and new Misfortunes

* new music tracks and new game themes (for special occasions such as Lunar New Year)

These seasonal updates are available to every owner of the game for FREE, regardless of DLC ownership.

And this is what we release as paid DLC:

* new character portraits and player tokens

* new music tracks and new game themes

* new trails, frames and emoticons

* new single-player content

If you enjoy Gremlins, Inc., you can support our development efforts by purchasing its DLC. However, there is absolutely no pressure to own any of the extra content in order to play the game or compete in the tournaments.

STEAM COMMUNITY MARKET, CRAFTING AND ITEM STORE

Gremlins, Inc. features in-game items and fully supports Steam Community Market. While playing the game, certain actions will trigger random chest drops with items of varying rarity: it could be a new emoticon, a new profile background, a new music track, or one of the dozens of other cosmetic items. These items are FREE, yours to use or trade on Steam Community Market. We, the developer, do not engage in the direct sales of any drop items; only players can trade them.

The game also supports crafting: once you find a blueprint of a specific item, you can create as many such items as you wish, as long as you have the required number of charges (you get charges when you convert other in-game items that you do not want, or have multiple copies of). Finally, the game has its own Steam Item Store where we sell a very small number of unique items that influence the item meta-game (but they have no effect on the game mechanics).

ONLINE & OFFLINE VERSIONS

Gremlins, Inc. was designed as a digital board game with the multiplayer mode at its heart. However, this is not to say that we don't like single-player – we do, and there's a separate section with the single-player challenges as well as the mode where you can create any custom single-player session that you like! One of the products that you receive with this game, Gremlins, Inc., features both single-player and multiplayer modes, and requires that your game client is connected to both Steam and the game's server at all times – in order to support item drops, Steam Community Market and Steam Workshop. The other product that is included with the game, Gremlins vs Automatons, features single-player mode and is designed specifically to be played offline.

Not sure I have ever played a game as addictive as Gremlins Inc. Since I bought it a year ago, I have spent over 1k hours and have been playing it almost on daily basis. It's even more impressive when you consider that the game itself doesn't get updated that often so it's not reliant on new content. I have seen comments complaining about finding games and the overall game mechanics but personally have not had problems with either. It takes a few minutes to queue, but when you consider the fact that ranked games on Europe usually last more than 30 minutes, it's not a big deal to wait 3 minutes before you join. You can also play against AI and against friends in various formats (duels, teams, FFA). Some matches can feel a bit random and can be blamed on luck but there's a reason why a lot of players have high win-rates. As with most other games, the more you play, the better you become. There are a lot of strategies, combos and scenarios that can help you win. Artwork (especially emotes) and music are easily 10/10 and they become even better with numerous DLC's (every single on of them is purely of cosmetic nature). Game is often heavily discounted so if you're not sure you can wait until it's 75% off but I have zero regrets about paying the full price. 20 EUR for 1k hours (and counting) is more than a fair deal.

This is extremly good and polished game. Must have if you like board games. Even in early access it is 100% complete as far as I am concerned. Yea they have some items they want to finish before release, but this is mainly polishing and make sure that all screens are beautiful. What is important that game communicity is already enough to have constant gaming in EU and US timezones. Pros: - Deep game mechanic, so there are space to get better and better in it - Very polished and nice looking game already (early access) - Big community in EU and US timezone - average wait time 5 min for ranked game, 15 min max. Lots of 3+ players games. - Funny and not repeatable at all due to massive random - each game has it's own fun. Cons: - Game can last for as long as 2 hours and you have limited amount of time on turn, so you need to be able not be fully comitted for this period. P.s. This is small game studiom game is not AAA (will not have millions of sales) and they have done very good job, so they more than deserve the price they are asking for.

(Serious review: forgive my lack of puns and general shenanigans) I havent played multiplayer yet, but I am GREATLY enjoying the single player experience. It's kind of hard to believe this is Early Access, as I've played games that claimed to be in full release that were far less polished than this! Visually, this game is stunning. The style and attention to detail on the cards is incredible, and the game board is beautiful, with little things lighting up and moving in the background, making the board feel 'alive.' There is a prototype card game being produced in limited run, and I'm buying it for the artwork of the cards alone. Gameplay wise, I feel like it accomplishes a good balance of strategy and luck... enough to keep you on your toes and guessing from beginning to end. There is a good variety of types of card with various effects, good and bad, that can be played against others or played against you. I really enjoyed the dual role of cards (you use them to move, plus you need to strategically plan out where you will land on the board in order to play other cards for points). A single player game took me roughly an hour, and this was with me very casually reading every line of every card and getting up to make tea, etc... so really, you could probably move through a game in 30-45 minutes. I highly recommend this game to board game lovers, steampunk enthusiasts, and strategy/card game fans. I bought it for $9.99 in Early Access, and there is some discussion of raising the price by about 50% when it goes live... and I can tell you that this game is easily worth $14.99. So throw some money to an indie developer and pick this up. You wont regret it!!

Pros: -Deep game mechanics -Well done tutorial -Wildly unpredictable games -Awesome lore section -Solid graphics/sound -Casual, relaxed gameplay Cons: -RNG gives, and RNG takes away -Gameplay can be difficult to follow at times Overall: Gremlins Inc. is a board game disguised as a computer game. Get that into your head when you decide on buying this game. Imagine sitting at a table with your friends choosing between this, Monopoly, and Risk. Gremlins isn't like any other board game I've played, though, and it fits being a video game well. Each player has six cards in hand, drawn from the same deck of cards, and when you play a card, you draw a new one. Cards can be played to move across the board, or on certain spots on the board to accomplish certain things. Each spot on the board has a different event, and measuring where you want to land and mapping out paths to different locations is crucial. There is a lot of dice rolling in this game, and oftentimes the rolls can give you massive bonuses or horrifying penalties. The player to accrue the most "Points" by playing cards and activating effects wins the game after either reaching a set milestone, or having a certain number of turns pass. There's a ton more to be said, but that's the basic gameplay. It's simple. It's like rolling the dice to move around the board in monopoly, and then deciding what to do with where you land. Or moving troops around on a Risk board, carefully planning around your opponents. It's simple to learn and yet has a surprising amount of strategy behind what you choose to do. And sometimes the dice just don't go your way, but luck seems to favor superior tactics in the long run. If you don't enjoy the casual tabletop experience, you might not enjoy this game. If you have ever sat back and thought it would be great if you could have that in a game, this game is for you. At $15, it's cheaper than most tabletop board games, and I enjoy it a great deal more. I hope you at least give it a try. Bottom Line: Recommend for the price

This game isn't perfect, but no game really is. I find the gameplay a bit slow overall, but it's a complex game with a lot going on each time you play. Right off the start this game grabbed me. The intro music is catchy. The sound design is great. The graphics are good, for what they are and what the game is, but I really like the artistic style even though the graphics aren't what most people would call spectacular. The gameplay can seem simple at first, but it's not. Not at all. It's got style. It's got good gameplay with well thought out mechanics. It's got Gremlins and Gadgets and Goodies and Gold. The alliteration - that's all mine. And so's the gold. FYI folks - though it may seem like it, this is *NOT* a collectable card game, every player draws from the same deck. Everyone has the same options available to them, but it is a random draw. You *ALWAYS* have 6 cards, even after you just played a card to move - you instantly draw back to 6. Discard your whole hand? Sure - but draw back up to 6 right away. Does this affect your game? Yeah, you may have been on the way to a place where you can play one of your cards, but because of the draw you don't need to go there anymore. You may need to backtrack for several turns to get to another location where you can do something beneficial. You may need to go somewhere closer for an even better card than you originally had. You just don't know, but you always have options because you always have 6 cards. The gameplay is rather deep and it takes a while to get used to it. I've played a couple games vs the A.I. and haven't won yet, but I'm getting the hang of it. It may take a couple more games before my plans actually start to pan out a bit better. Yes, this is a board game and yes a 6 sided random number generator is used. Usually, when you play a board game you roll dice to determine a andom distance your token or player or piece moves - then you have to deal with the outcome or consequences of the space where you landed or stopped. Simple and straightforward. This is the method used by a lot of the classic board games and there is often little to no thought or decision making involved once you land on a space. Why did I just explain that? You already know that, right? Well, I explained it because Gremlins, Inc. is pretty much the opposite of that. And that's a very, very good thing. In this game you CHOOSE how far you're moving based on the six cards in your hand. You can use any of them for movement, they all have a move value from 1 to 6, with 2-4 looking like they're the most common. Instead of your movement being random and the outcome of the space you land on being fixed, the movement is chosen by you but the outcome of the spots or places you land on is frequently random, but not always. And sometimes you can play a card or have a permanent effect that cancels or changes the outcome of the spaces where you land. The board also has several options for where you can go and how you can get there, plus some cards bypass normal movement rules completely. There's always choice involved in where you go and what you're trying to do instead of the game forcing you to go somewhere and often giving you no choice over what happens when you get there. Basically - Gremlins, Inc. is the opposite of what I don't like about many traditional board games. Sure, they can pass the time but are you really using your noggin to make decisions? In Gremlins, Inc. you are using your noggin - or you're losing. Big time. There are a variety of ways to play. I thought I had a recent game in the bag. I had a huge income. I got a lot of money when I passed an income square, double if I landed on it and double if I went to the bank, which usually yields zero, I was the governor so didn't have to worry about bribes/police and had a few other things going for me. I had nearly enough of a score to win the game. I was, however, nearly broke. I should have had cash like crazy, but I had the least of all the players. Still, I was in good shape, right? I had some cards that were easy to play and would have given me the game. Did I win? Nope. Some sneaky Gremlin managed to score just enough points to win before I could. Did I pump my income just a bit too much when I should have been doing something else? Should I have passed up the win on that last election to get some more money or move to a different location on the map? Should I have stayed in jail instead of accepting amnesty a couple times to get out early? No idea... but I made those decisions myself. I didn't lose just because of a couple dice rolls. Sure I had a few rolls go the wrong way but I chose to to to those places and those dice rolls were something I chose to let happen. Basically I chose my fate, not the dice. I could have avoided those places or spots but I decided to risk it out. I mentioned jail - you *CAN* go directly to jail in some cases, but you don't just sit there rolling dice or paying a fine to get out. Things happen while you're in there that can change the outcome of the game - and sometimes it's actually in the jailbird's favour! If you haven't figured it out yet, I think everyone should check this one out. And by check it out I mean buy it and play it, or at the absolute least give it a very good look and read up on it, well beyond my review, because it's a pretty solid game and quite fun overall. Although I found the gameplay a bit slow this game deserves at least a solid 8/10. . . so I'm giving it a 9. Why? Because I actually liked it from the first moment the game was fully loaded up. Usually I'm grumpy about something within seconds - whether it's poor music, a terrible tutorial or game manual, or just a craptastic user interface. This game did all of that, and more, very well. What do you do with people who do something well? You give them a good frigging review, that's what. Edited - caveat emptor - the game needs access to the internet and is designed to be played online. Sorry for not adding that in earlier. Single player is possible with AI, but it's meant to be a multiplayer game. There are several "ladders" for players of various skill and rank.

Good game lot of fun... but with a huge design flaw. This game requires an always online even for a single player. Yes folks you can actually get kicked out of your single player game if the developers servers blinked, it doesn't have to be your connection goes out.

I LOVE board games. I've have now played 15 games in the last two days and NOT finish one. If the server blinks for a second you are kicked out and can not finish the game. EVERY game I've played, I've been kicked out. I'm in the top 10 markets for internet speed and reliability so I'm sure it is not on my end. This problem has only been with this game. If you did not have to stay on the internet to play or there was a save mech to return you to your previous game I would have recommended the game.

Digital Board games are a dime a dozen. Or rather, digital adaptions of real board games are. There are a few that survive the translation well, (Blood Bowl which is on Steam as well, and Diplomacy¹ being the ones that comes to mind). However, an actual digital boardgame in the true sense, a boardgame created WITH digital in mind, is not so common. gremlins is one such game, and a fine example of it. Systems that wouldn't work so well on a physical boardgame are taken full advantage of here, such as 3 didgit resources (Which doens't seem a big deal, but try telling everyone to half their currency in a tabletop game, and watch as everyone has to fuss about with the Bank to get all their paper dollars in order), long term events. The game itself is of course great too, a game of deviousness, misfortune, and constant push and pull between players. The main mechanic that exemplifies how the game takes a unique spin on things is movement. Every player has a hand of 6 cards that are replaced as they spend them. Cards have both an effect that can only be activated on certain types of spaces, and a picture of a dice. That picture is how many movement squares you can move, and thus every turn you must select a card because you either need to move a certain # of spaces, it's the one you'd least like to keep, one you activly want to discard, etc etc. Thus even the act of moving carries decisions and tradeoffs. The developers also take full advantage of the digital nature of the game, such as making serverside updates without pushing a client side patch. ¹ Diplomacy can be played at the website WebDiplomacy, PlayDiplomacy, or on Android client Conspiracy

This game is great. The art and theming is fantastic. The cards are clever and interesting to play. There is some RNG, but when you fail it's way more hilarious than it is enraging. (Usually.) It plays best with friends, but make sure you're good friends before you start to play. You WILL be actively dicking each other over at every turn. It works out, though--it's as entertaining to lose as it is to win! (THERE GOES HALF YOUR MONEY, BITCH!) One of my only problems with it is the game is balanced toward zero-income. By that, I mean that a lot of the cards will steadily drain your income over time unless you combat it, so the game doesn't regularly reach an endgame state where game-winning cards are easy to build. You have to nickel-and-dime (or should I say cog-and-gear?) your way to the top sometimes, and with the prevalence of cards and mechanics that can reduce your victory point total, it can be really rough to secure a point victory. Also, while I enjoy playing this game single-player on occasion, I wouldn't call the current single-player mode great. The AI, in an attempt to be more difficult, will target you with every card it can, which normally results in it just sending you to jail and reducing your point total every chance it gets. Combine this with the fact that gameplay in singleplayer currently consists of you racing to win in a very short amount of time, and you don't have a great situation. Oh well. You don't lose the challenge for going overtime, and the challenges themselves offer new and interesting strategies to play the game by. It makes me excited for the upcoming update where they add character abilties (as free DLC!) All in all, this is a fantastic digital board game. If you like this kind of game, definitely pick it up and swindle the gold right out of those poor sucker's--I mean, start a reputable business today!

Imagine if someone crossed Mario Party and Mario Kart, and turned it into a board game, but took away the karts and added Gremlins, and rampant corruption. That's Gremlins, Inc. 10/10
