Garlic Возможности

Dive into this addictive hardcore platformer,

You are Garlic, an onion-headed boy and you want to climb the Sacred Tower to meet the Cyber Goddess that grants a wish to the heroes who reach the top..

But this time it seems that things are not going to go as planned, (wow what an unexpected story)

Don't wanna spoil you all the game but there seems to be something with the Cyber Goddess

Why not talking a bit about gameplay..?

Wall jump, dash, tons of traps and some enemies too, with lot of moving backgrounds,

one screen stages and large stages, many checkpoints to not get frustrated in a simple n fun mechanics, with possibility of advanced gameplay performing amazing combo dashes (just try it out by spamming the dash button into walls, floors and even ceilings!)

inspired by Super Meatboy, Celeste, Gato Roboto....

The developer says this is inspired by Celeste and I can see the influences but this is proof you need more than love for a game to nail its style properly. I adore precision platformers but this game has a few incredibly fatal flaws that go against the entire idea behind the genre. The biggest and most frustrating is unpredictability. In precision platformers you die over and over again until you learn the layout and timing of the entire section, so by the time you complete it, you end up doing it flawlessly. In Garlic many of the enemies and hazards (like fire in pipes) have timing that is slightly different each time you die. I truly cannot understand the logic in doing this. The same goes for how you sometimes run around uncontrollably when fire hits you and other times it's just a normal hit. Not knowing how your character will react in a precision platformer goes against everything you want in this genre. It shows a fundamental lack of understanding of the draw of this type of game. The developer also CONSTANTLY slows the pace of the game down. Every respawn spot has a fireball or some obstacle that you have to wait for and dodge before going forward again. WHY?! When you die you want to hold forward and go to try again. Instead he puts something that you cannot dodge and makes you wait and sit there while the hazards compelte their cycle before you can time your jump around it. Incredibly poor design. Another way he ruins the pacing is by having small enemies appear in the most inconvenient spot during fun fast paced platforming sections. You have to stop and avoid them, slowing down the action. I get he's trying to make it hard, but again, this genre is not about being hard for the sake of being hard. It's about the flow and speed at which you go. It's like all those bad developers that made really hard dark souls rip offs cause they thought people just liked hard games. Difficulty is part of the draw, but its not the main draw of why people like Dark Souls. Celeste is hard, but that's not the reason most people play. The maker of Garlic needs to learn that. Final point, why do you give me bonus hearts for one life?! What is the point? Just make them stay until you reach the next screen. If someone is picking an option for help, its obvious they need it. Why only let them stay active for one life? Absolutely ridiculously stupid design. Positives? The little custscnes and Garlics anime inspired facial expressions are really funny. The controls are mostly solid. Animations and music are decent. That's really about it?

An intense, unwholesomely addictive ragegame whose barely beatable Mario Maker levels will have you in tears by the end. The goofy charm and variety of the non-platforming levels just might keep you going, like they did me (I also couldn't bear to let the game "win"), but boy, when I snagged that rose at last, I was finished. No woman, even a sextuple-pigtailed cybergoddess, is worth that much damned trouble. Garlic himself is as slippery as vegetable oil; his slam-against-the-wall charge power hinders more than it helps. It actually feels like you beat half the levels by accident. The humor, visuals, and nifty side-games (Garlic and his Shyguy pal picking up their room before the Goddess gets there, etc.) are really just too good, I think, for inclusion in what amounts to a digital self-torture device. Difficulty is a tricky thing. NES hard -- Castlevania, Ninja Gaiden in its better, less glitchy moments, Mega Man -- is a fine standard for neoretro indies to shoot for, and difficulty selection is a garbage feature that never serves game design well. This however, ain't NES hard. This . . . now this is something else . . .

Underrated gem of a game. It's a challenging 2D platformer with neat ideas and creativity sprinkled into the mix. - Schmovement is great - OST is nonstop bangers - Humor is weird but it's right up my alley Go give it a try, it's totally worth it.

Criminally underrated that is flying under too many radars. The precision platforming in here is rock solid and fair, with only one little section having any kaizo madness. The pixel art in the cutscenes is so well done and funny, and the mini games that break up the tough as nails levels are very welcome. I highly recommend this game and really hope the dev gets the attention they deserve.

The trailer made me hit the buy button - seeing the protagonist dancing on a perfect route and landing precisely, made me think Garlic is an easy game... I was so wrong. There should be a "Difficult" tag in the store page. I find it harder than The Messenger. Garlic is a challenging 2D side-scrolling game, player climb up all the way, avoiding saws, flames, enemies and jump precisely and in time. Intense, I find myself feeling tired in half an hour. One mistake usually leads to an instant death, or a near death period player cannot do the essential double jump. It is not always about 2D scrolling, occasionally an arcade and 2.5D mini game cut in, and various maps make it fun to play. As of August, 2022 Garlic does not support a keyboard, I am not used to the controller and usually find the dashing direction is not what I intended. I might pick it up again when keyboard support is added. I rate Garlic positive, fun to play and a good way to test skill.

If you enjoy precision platformers with fun movement, this game is for you! Somewhat unconventional level design and movement options but as you stick with it, you start to understand what they were going for and it's a ton of fun. If you don't use advanced dash techniques, certain sections get significantly more difficult but they're never impossible even if you only do standard platforming. I wish there was a bit more visual differentiation between some of the hazards. For instance, in 3-9 the pipes that shoot 1-hit-kill flames and ones that shoot regular fireballs look the same until you see what comes out of them so you can't tell at a glance how you'll have to approach them. In any case, I want to clock hundreds of hours in this game so I hope we'll have steamdeck support soon!

World 1 was OK, I liked world 2 a lot but I got past world 3 kicking and screaming about the experience and while I'm not hard blocked by the game, I don't have it in me to go further. There's just something about the movement that irks me, I'm constantly overshooting or undershooting platforms, either because the dash has two possible distances depending on how long you press it and make me constantly mess up, or because the character has too much / not enough inertia and I can't for the life of me make quick adjustment to my jumps to get them right. While all of this didn't stop me to make steady progress, it just felt like I was struggling with my character the whole time and it completely broke the vibe for me. That being said, I liked the game art, its cutscenes where dumb just the way I like and the few minigames I got while progressing were pretty cool. I don't think Garlic is necessarily a bad game, but I certainly didn't enjoy my time with it enough to try and go further, and my dislike for its controls made the gameplay much more frustrating and going further didn't felt rewarding enough to offset that.
