Just going to say it, this series of games is SCARY. They ground themselves in realistic situations that are more tense and creepy than full on scary, but they are REALLY well done. It's the kind of game that you are going to play and then you're going to check that your windows and your doors are locked. Want to watch a video rather than read a review? You can do that here, I played both of the Fears to Fathom games: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5kefQPulo7M So Episode 2 in Fears to Fathom has you take on the role of a 19 year old who is traveling to a convention and runs into a bit of some car trouble. This leads you to have to stay in a motel overnight while your car gets fixed. I know it sounds like it's not particularly action packed or anything but dang does it do a great job of storytelling. I really think the most important thing in horror games is that they are grounded in reality. The strong the game is rooted in REALISTIC situations the more scary they can be. It's not aliens or centaurs or trolls that are the scariest... it's the guy at the motel that just give you that bad feeling in the pit of your stomach when you walked past in the lobby. It's the person you saw walking around the neighborhood that you had never seen before that just makes you wonder what that was all about. It's realistic horror situations that just don't sit right and you know something is wrong. This game does this PERFECTLY. I should say, before getting too deep into it that you should play the first episode on Steam... well first. It's called Home Alone and it's FREE. It'll take you about 20 minutes to complete and I think it has one of the best scares in horror games. Just a moment of tension and realization where it made the hair on my arms stand up it was just so uncomfortable. I hated it. For a horror game that's great. Norwood Hitchhike doesn't use many jumpscares... in fact I think there's really only one or two depending on your choices in the game it seems like. It's really impressive how much they do with so little. Most of the game you're just working yourself up due to things you DON'T see or things you THINK are going to happen. They have little things happen in the background that when you catch just make you suspicious and on edge. These games are really good at that. I don't want to spoil it if you are thinking about playing it, but just know this series of games is one of those that you want to keep your eyes on going forward. This developer obviously has a great grasp of horror and I highly recommend watching them in the future for what they do next. I'd be terrified of seeing what this developer could do with a huge AAA studio budget.

TL;DR - Another pair of pants ruined. A confident second instalment in the Fears to Fathom anthology series which takes everything that was enjoyable about the free first episode and transposes it to a larger more fully realised game. The series' conceit is that we are playing through true stories as recounted by "those who survived". It feels a little like the developer trawled through FOAF stories and creepy pastas then distilled the essence of what makes the best of these work so well. These are not games about shambling monstrosities made from eyeballs and razor blades. There are no omnipresent killers, there are no portals to demon dimensions and there are no haunted houses or ancient curses. Instead we have everyday locations, mundane situations and perfectly normal protagonists. The developer takes these elements and then makes them unsettling by playing with our perceptions and expectations through a mix of believable narrative, impressive sound design, and creepy visual aesthetics. The first game detailed the exploits of a 14 year old boy left home alone for the first time in his life, who then had to deal with a terrifyingly real situation without the safety net of his parents. (It's free to play, go try it out!) This second title uses a similar narrative, only now we play as a young woman who is completing her first interstate drive. She soon experiences car troubles and must choose who to trust when she finds herself stranded in an unfamiliar locale. The first game took place in a single location. An average all American house in an average all American neighborhood. There was a great feeling of claustrophobia and a terrible sense of being surrounded by people who could not help you. This second title begins in an average all American automobile on an average all American road in an... well you get the idea. We start somewhere in the middle of Holly Gardner's 12 hour drive home from an out of state gaming convention. The moon is low in the sky, pine trees loom ominously from both sides of the road, barbed wire fences run the length of the highway, and the lights of the car are just bright enough to illuminate the way without revealing peripheral details. Coupled with a pitch black car interior lit only by the dashboard and radio, the atmosphere is instantly oppressive and unwelcoming. As the journey continues Holly's inner monologue appears onscreen, recounting events as she remembers them. We also receive text messages on her phone from a few NPCs, and these two elements combined push the narrative forward. It's a little contrived and a little on the nose, but it's a pretty decent way of explaining to the player what they should be doing. Naturally things don't go as planned, and eventually you are left resenting your choice to drive home via the back roads. Your night takes a turn for the worse when you arrive at a local motel and must resign yourself to staying the night against your better judgement. You're a young woman travelling alone, you are in the middle of nowhere, you have no phone signal, your car won't start, you are at the behest of Joe the owner and operator of the Norwood Valley Motel. What could possibly go wrong? Oh you know it's a lot. I will say no more about the plot or the gameplay. What I will say is that I genuinely jumped at least twice, complete with a racing heart which took a few minutes to calm down again. The visuals are great, calling to mind PSX era graphics. Everything is recognisable, but given that grainy grime filter to make it just a little unreal. Object models are nicely lo-fi while remaining realistic. Character models are a little unnatural, and there is a certain jankiness on display which rather than detracting from the enjoyment, somehow enhances the creepiness and unsettling nature of things. An observant player will be rewarded with a much richer story than the narrative alone dictates. The player is free to stop the car at any stage and get out to have a look around. The sense of isolation and helplessness on the open road is immense and palpable. You are an insignificant speck lost in an ineffable darkness. Yes, just like real life. I can only assume that the developer is a fan of John Carpenter's Halloween. The first game had a great scene which recalled one of Mister Myers' early appearances in that movie. This second title has an audio cue which called to mind Ms Strode and her unenviable position as the object of Michael's fascinations. Or maybe I'm imagining things. But probably not. There are problems with the game, but they are mostly of the spelling and grammar variety. And the aforementioned jankiness. For the most part the jank adds to the fun and the retro aesthetic, but sometimes it means you get stuck inside a door or an event fails to trigger. They are easily overlooked, but I would suggest that the developer gets himself a proof reader, especially when designing assets with writing on them. All in, this was a great horror experience. It will last you about an hour and will cost you around the price of a small cup of coffee from a motel vending machine. If like me, you enjoy achievement hunting and trying out all possible actions and interactions, you may get another hour of play time and that's a darn fine deal. I already look forward to the next instalment of this series and wish the developer every success. I hope that people discover this game and will support an indie developer who clearly has a good instinct for horror.

Fears to Fathom is an episodic title where the emphasis is on presenting a horror story. This is a story of an individual who is stalked and while first and foremost this is a walking sim there are sections where you can actually die if you are not very careful. The first episode is free so before paying for this feel free to try that one as the atmosphere remains identical in this second story. Norwood Hitchhike takes around an hour to complete and we follow the story of Holly who is driving back home and rents a room in a motel along the way. There are some NPCs we can interact with and a relatively long driving sequence, too. The tasks we have to do are pretty straightforward as the protagonist reminds us of them - we also receive regular text messages from friends and family members to see the story progress. I don't usually review new games as they tend to have bugs and several updates are released to remedy this. While episode 2 allows the change of graphics I couldn't manage to turn on the AA (the slider didn't work) and while having a VHS filter definitely creates a better atmosphere it would also be nice to see the option to turn it off (and to apply some other filters instead). Because you can get out of your car anytime some people already started uploading screenshots to show where the edge of the playable area is. Overall, I like these short walking sims. They present us with a story of loneliness and put us into the shoes of youngsters finding themselves in desperate situations. The use of microphone I find a great addition to the gameplay! With some more upgrades and a little more text proofreading this (and subsequent) episodes can be much better. Highly recommended if you like horror and walking sims.

The first episode was a quick scare but still well done, I didn't expect anything crazy from the second one yet was still looking forward to it. But it knocked all my expectations out the park, the build up was much longer than the first, it had characters you could interact with, 2 different environments and items that give benefits (speed boost). Some people may complain about the graphics however I think they fit perfectly to the short story aesthetic. Great price and I can't wait for the next one!

if you get out of the car on the bridge and throw all the stuff in your trunk over the side of the bridge you cannot get back into your car and then if you just walk instead eventually the road disappears and nothing happens ever
