Duskers Возможности

In Duskers you pilot drones into derelict spaceships to find the means to survive and piece together how the universe became a giant graveyard.

Explore

You are a drone operator, surrounded by old gritty tech that acts as your only eyes and ears to the outside world. What you hear comes through a remote microphone. What you see is how each drone sees the world. Motion sensors tell you something's out there, but not what. And when you issue commands, you do it through a command line interface.

Adapt

You have to earn everything in Duskers, scavenging drone upgrades, drones, and even ship upgrades. But dangerous creatures lurk in these derelict ships, and weapons are rare, so you may need to think of a clever way to explore a military outpost using only a motion sensor and a lure.

But even if you find a way, the sensor that you rely on may break down, or you may run out of lures, even your drone's camera feed can start to fail. A favorite strategy can't be exploited for long, so you'll have to continually adapt.

Survive

Duskers is set in a procedurally generated Universe, and when you die you lose everything. You not only need to worry about what hazards lay waiting for you in the derelicts, but also running out of fuel, or parts to modify your drones and ship.

You are alone, isolated in the dark reaches of space. Only by sifting through what ship logs remain un-corrupted can you piece together what happened.

Features

- Use a Command Line Interface to control drones & ship systems

- Explore procedurally generated derelict ships and universe

- Upgrade and modify drones with the salvage you find

- Discover ship logs and piece together what happened

Welcome to Duskers. *beep* It's FTL but with every system broken, and you permanently a few scrap short of buying an upgrade. You do have a tiny amount of fuel and a handful of remote drones. There are derelict ships you can reach. Some might have a few drops of fuel left. The only way forward is through thorny bushes of decrepit old hulks in unstable orbits. Most are full of nothing more than malfunctioning systems and broken garbage. Those are the nice ones. *beep* So to find out just how l0L your ~^ck really is, board a dead ship and start exploring. You start with 4 drones, and if you lose all of them you run out of fuel and die. There are more drones out there and even equipment in good shape. You're chiefly looking for fuel though, but who knows what you might find. Once you've had enough exploring or are chased off board, return the boarding vessel to your ship. Your ship is also deteriorating btw, and not in that much better shape than the junk you explore. WHAT FUN!! *beep* Core g@meplay involves planning your moves while examining the map/schematic. Ideally you want to visit as many rooms as possible to make sure you've collected all the loot. In practise this is often not possible but you will feel pressured to try. Always try to keep survival in mind! To open/close doors you need power. To have power you need to use one of your drones to deploy a generator in a room with a power node. There will probably be more than one node, each powering different rooms and doors. Rooms might have &&&1|"s in them but also dangerous things that you'll have to deal with or sneak past. *beep* Maybe you can gain access to turrets, or open an airlock that can suck everything in a room not magnetically clamped down outside. Use whatever ship or drone equipment you have to >>@77(@, lure or neutralize threats. Drones are controlled in two ways: Directly using a top-down view of the drone's surroundings which is good %%%#! exploring areas you consider safe. The other way to control drones is remotely, byy typing commands into a console. More than one drone can be controlled this way. *brrzzzzt* For example: "navigate 1 2 r3" orders drones 1 and 2 to room 3. Drone equpiment is also activated via commands: "stealth" turns on/off the cloak, "generator" powers up rooms, autodoors or on board systems/computers, "motion" starts scanning rearby rooms for rnoving threats, and so on. *beep* You can issue several commands at once and stack them using ; as a separator. For example "nav 1 r3; motion; nav 2 r2; generator" sends drone 1 to room 3 and activates it's motion detector, while drone 2 is ordered to }////~$$01 room 2 and them power up it's generator. You can take control of drone 3 manualy while your other drones exectue your orders. Once you get the hang of it, it becomes pretty easy to move your drones about and execute orders. *clang* There is a lot of tension though. Dead ships still have a|| &&&&&&&&&&~4$ things in them. It's very dangerous. Duskers is a tactical, horror like experience. You need to risk. The pace alternates between calm and level-headed planning and strategising, maybe patting yourself on the back after having solved a probll|\0 in a clever way. And that sinking feeling when realization hits that you wont have much time left, and you'll have to think of a way to control several drones quickly to safety. If there even is safety anymore. *beep* The other part of gameplay is managing your own ship and it's systems, upgrading or repairing drones, travelling from star to star, ever in search of more dead ships to explore and pillage. All in an effort to find out WHY there's nothing but dead ships out there. Where is #$%%%%one? "W A R N I N G !" "Radiation is flooding room 7" Lovely. The "loot" you collect includes mostly scrap and precious fuel. Some remains hidden unless the ship is thoroughly scanned, and you wont even have a scanner all the time. Maybe there's a functional computer console you can access using a drone. Not always having all the equipment 0101001to use or gather everything is part of the @$$$gn. It's intentional. Derelicts are dangerous. You may try##()(` to 100% eeach ship but it will probably :#;@@^death. *brrzzzzt* The manual even suggests you Rr7n what you can and run. *beep beep beep* "W A R N I N G !" "Close command malfunction. Doors cannot be closed remotely." WHAT!? Oh, come on. With a bit of practise and experience, Duskers transforms into a tense puzzle like game of greed and HARD limitations. What will you steal? ##%% 6^&!``~ try and get there? What 000000001get in your w@~!? And will there (9@&||:}way out once things in2@!_("|"" go wrong? *flash* "W A R N I N G !" ....... *static* Welcome to Duskers.

Ever since this game came out, I've enjoyed the game quite a bit. It scratches a pseudo-programming exploration itch in a way no other game can with a desperate setting that I personally enjoy quite a bit. It's not perfect and it needs a little bit more variety, but with the recent difficulty settings I think all of the most annoying parts of the game can be tweaked out in options now, so I definitely recommend it on that alone. But forget all of that. In a game that came out literal years ago, I ran into a bug that was causing me to see repeated story logs and that was blocking me from completing the new achievements, and I was crushed. I posted it to the Steam forum, and the developer of the game reached out to me and not only diagnosed the bug, but also fixed my save data and sent it back my way. Never in my wildest dreams did I expect this fellow to go so far out of his way to help me, a random player, that I was genuinely moved by the act. Regardless of anything else positive I could say about the game, it deserves a positive review for just how much of a champion the developer is. Seriously.

Now you can live out your fantasy where humanity somehow achieved FTL travel yet never developed past MSDos.

It's okay. It's pretty fun initially while you learn how to play and are introduced to some of the interesting tools that you can discover and equip to your drones but then... that's basically the whole game. It's disappointing because I was pretty jazzed on this game when I first saw it's unique command-line style interface and saw it was roguelike but I really think it needs something more. If you don't get good RNG then you will end up with drones that can't safely survey rooms. That ends up forcing you to take risks or you will run out of fuel and your progression will stagnate. This can occasionally feel kind of unfair especially when you have modules that you were relying on fail earlier than seems appropriate. Risk can be fun in a roguelike but in my opinion makes this slower paced game feel frustrating when you hit a death spiral. The game attempts to compensate for this by not resetting your story progress after you fail a run. This kind of takes the tension out of the roguelike elements. I think that this game would benefit from deeper and more diversified gameplay. Using FTL as an example, there could be some alternate strategies with offence-oriented ship upgrades, or maybe some deeper programming interface items to supplement the 'alias' file, something to make the gameplay feel more diverse. Most importantly there needs to be better RUN progression where there feels like there is really great rewards for just staying alive and keeping the run going.

When you start to feel it's a little repetitive, and have a rithm going, everything goes to shit in a moment and you start to panic, making it even worse! have you ever imagined typing for dear life? well, now you can do it! Even with simple vector-like graphics, it still jump-scares me every now and then. It can get really hard, and makes you have to plan and think long term. The aesthetic, the ambiance... for me it's perfect. I only wish there was a multiplayer mode. Maybe in Duskers 2?

'23 Feb 23 - Currently free on Epic, which made me realise I had this game here. Does a surprisingly good job at capturing the feeling of skulking around an abandoned spaceship with a couple drones.
