  This game has a lot to recommend it. It can be played solo in only a couple hours. It is sufficiently different from traditional hex games. No hexes. You are the generals, giving orders to units in the front to do various tasks; assault, bombard, infiltrate, go to reserve, refit, air assault, move troops up to the line, etc. The AI handles the results and you are presented with text results and a situation map with arrows indicating drives. Basically a 10,000 foot level look at the war. It is quick, intuitive and fun! When you need an 'East Front' fix, this is a good alternative to the AI games that make you micromanage each unit. Good replay value as well, because you are presented with decision points at various times, like; what front do reserves go to?; Hitler wants to assume command (you can block, with consequences), etc.

  This is a unique and damn good wargame, as a gamer of 45 years and especially WW2 games, I found this game different and very interesting, it does have a learning curve, but rewards you with a very good game, once you understand what your doing, and it's historically accurate, so I definitely recommend this game and the devs are very active. 7/10

  I find this game fascinating. The graphics are simple, but informative. The GUI is not very intuitive at first, but just keep clicking and eventually you get it. There are interesting choices to make but it's not always clear what effect your choice will have on the game. The Wiki is incomplete--as is the manual. I suppose that's what happens with an early access game. This is a cerebral game wrapped up into a simple package. Kudos to the developer for a fascinatingly different look at Operation Barbarossa.

  So i played this game and advanced 3 month 'till Sept.41. Here are some things unclear, and I cannot figure out by using the in-game tooltip; 1. It seems the game has no save/load function, that may means i have to play it through without shutting the game? Also, the absence of saving game made PBEM impossible. 2.minor bugs; isolated units sometimes may still transfer from campaign to campaign, or from campaign to HQ. And I noticed when doing transfer some units' combat status(like isolated,), which should be cleared. When a campaign ends and units automatically assigned to next campaigns they do inheritage them, too, which is also unreasonable. 3. Some times HQ cannot deploy unit to the campaign it commands, but have to go through other lines. I am not sure about this but i will check it out and update this comment. Is there any other way to give feedback? only Discord? XD Brilliant game, it's design is really unique.

  Playing as the Germans (the easier side) or the Soviets (the suffering one), you will have the opportunity to experience Operation Barbarossa. A few decisions between turns (weeks) will pop up, you must choose wisely. However, where you will spend time is on the various operations taking place: see what forces you have, see what is best for destroying or encircling the ennemy. Progress, fail, try again. Cauldrons of War is a nice, small game that has more depth than you may think at first glance. An enjoyable feature? Contrary to HoI4, you do not need to spend 10hours+ to see the end of it! Yes! That alone is a solid good point. But what about replayability, you may ask? Well, try focussing on a different front this time. Achieving even a minor victory will require patience and tenacity! Despite simple appearances, it has a nice level of complexity. You will have to spend some time in the internal wiki to understand which action does what (Oh yes, you do). Definitely a game I would recommend! PS: Do not listen to the chap who negatively compared Cauldrons of War to Decisive Campaign Barbarossa (i.e. pitted a €5 game versus a €45 one). The ambition is clearly not the same. Take Cauldrons of War for what it is and claims to be: a fast-paced, strategic experience with a pleasant level of historical details.

  Really makes you feel like a WW2 Field marshal huddled over a map. While the game is largely text based it truely captures the feeling of the Russian Front. From the elation of the first push to the desperate tooth and nail struggle for the final drive on Moscow.

  Cauldrons of War is brilliantly designed wargame that puts you in total command of either the Axis or Soviet forces from the German Invasion of the Soviet Union in June of 1941 until the Soviet Counter offensive in the Winter of 1942. It is one of the most tightly designed wargames on the market and yet its surprisingly complex. The game worries you primarily about issues that would worry a General In Chief, (Supply, Type of Operations, Force Composition of those Operations, how hard and far to push etc…) without worrying you about things a lot of wargames try to force on you, even if your rank doesn’t make that make much sense (micro-management) and in that sense this might be the closest experience to being a Field Marshall during the Second World War of anything that’s been released as a game. There are only a few things I'd change to make this game even better, 1. I'd like higher resolution maps, the games imagery does what it needs to do but it could be even better with an eye popping military style atlas with a great resolution. 2. The campaign needs to extend a bit further into 1942, playing as the Russian's is nowhere near as fun as playing as the Germans because you're the punching bag for the entire game and only have a few weeks at the very end of the game to counter strike, the game should extend a bit further, in line with the historical Soviet counter offensive in front of Moscow. 3. At times some key information about why certain tactics work and why later those same tactics don't work, feels hidden. The game might benefit from displaying combat modifiers or other items that help inform the player why things are working and why they aren't. Those are minor issues however, overall this is a brilliant game and for only $5, you can't go wrong with it.

  For the historical wargamer interested in Operation Barbarossa there is a LOT to like in this little gem of a game. 1. Clean mechanics - no fussing with small details 2. Tough decisions 3. Nice historical detail - photos used are evocative 4. A challenging AI (only a draw the first time as Germans on normal difficulty) 5. Immersive - it feels like you're immersed in the war in 1941 The game is not polished - it has LOTS of spelling mistakes - some mechanics are not really clear until you try them out! The tutorial is minimal. Small flaws aside, this is a great elegant game system which could be extended to other campaigns (I'm thinking North Africa, 42-45 East Front, or even West Front 1944). The game works fine "as is" in Early Access and will no doubt be improved. It's a steal at $5! Developers of this kind of niche game need our love (and cash). Highly recommended for wargamers who want to play out Barbarossa in a couple of hours.

  I am an old wargamer who has been playing board and computer wargames for 50+ years. I highly recommend CofW. It gives you the feel of playing as the leader of OKH or Stavka, giving orders to fronts and army groups. There is no micromanaging, so that the weekly turns take only a few minutes to process. The AI, at normal level, is competent - surprising me with its moves. Each turn, you are presented with a few to many historical decisions. Based on these decisions, you may change your strategic objectives and open new fronts. The Developer is very active and is currently working on new Campaigns. Buy this game - it so affordable!

  A brilliant indie wargame that leans into the fine art gaming realm, in the footsteps of the emotionally devastating Papers Please with a hint of the operational strategy in Unity of Command. Totally abstract, one of the most interesting and compelling World War 2 games. For all of its rough edges, it transports you to the hellish killing fields of the Eastern Front. A+ strategy game. Hope this developer can get funding to flesh this out into a finished masterpiece. Even in its primordial state, this thing is destined to be a gaming cult classic. Bravo! + The learning curve is steep, but overall approachable and totally worth the effort.
