  I'd say that there's a good reason why (as of writing) Ato has only 5 public negative reviews, all of which come from people with under an hour of playtime. It's an excellent game that has tight controls, brilliant combat, atmospheric sound, and an emotive soundtrack. The most significant downside it has that I can think of is how short it is. I've beaten it twice, both times taking roughly 6 hours, in both of which I got all talismans and coins, along with beating most of the optional bosses (and I think I would have done all of them if I knew how to get the third mask piece to fight the vagrant). I think it's a good length for replayability, which is nice since you unlock three extra difficulties after your first completion, but I wouldn't complain if it was a bit longer. The final boss fight is absolutely excellent and creates an enthralling challenge that builds off of what Ato has done before very well. However, while it's a satisfying peak for the game to end on, I think that the combat could go further, creating more intense challenges and building even higher. I'll note that I haven't beaten Hell difficulty yet, so that might have what I'm looking for. Gameplay aside, Ato tells its story sophisticatedly & without words. This is made easier by it being a simple story, but doing it so well without language is still impressive. I found a certain endgame moment to be quite poignant, and before then a certain boss fight's circumstances are shown very effectively through character actions. These show how well the game expresses characters with no language despite the limitations of a pixel art artstyle. The story is overall quite light though, and is almost always in the back seat to the gameplay, which I think is effective when no words are used as it allows a more fluid transition between dedicated cutscenes and gameplay sections. The artstyle, as I mentioned earlier, is pixel art, and is quite simple. Characters have a fair bit of detail, but the foreground art is usually flat. I'm not particularly interested in graphics, and I didn't find it ugly, so I don't think it matters much in the end. The soundtrack varies greatly between tones, swinging from subdued and atmospheric for the environment, to energetic and intense for the fights, to ominous and foreboding for certain imposing areas. It manages to captures all of these settings very well, and while I wouldn't call it a masterpiece, it is an excellent compliment to the game and still quite strong on its own. Ultimately, Ato is a great game, which hasn't gotten the attention that it should, and that I think deserves DLC (even if I doubt any will release).

  an incredibly fun metroidvania with a lot of heart and charm, the movement and combat is simple enough but allows for really creative levels and boss fights i loved the soundtrack and art also
