  On first impressions, I think this is how you do an asset flip correctly. There is no thematic reason for the models to look the way they do - mostly like somewhat low-fidelity realistic fish and battleships - unless they were prebought assets intended as flavor for another game. What they've done is taken those assets, added some motherfucking lasers, and turned it into a functional but hilarious sea shooter. I mean, it's not a great game on its technical merits; The shooting itself is fiddly and doesn't always feel impactful and the sequence of progression is murky. There's very little clear strategy except that you just kind of throw your units at their units and hope they're bigger, then use genetic material from those units to make something bigger, rinse and repeat. If a mecha combat game or space shooter had mechanics like this it would rightly be panned. But it is a laugh. It's a surreal, eye-crossing laugh, worthy of more giggles than most comedy games in the past year. It is the kind of laugh that can only be had across a cultural gap; the kind Japan provides on a regular basis, as you snipe with salmon, order your school to Engage Reef and Commence Operations, then suddenly come across historical battleships for no goddamn reason. Basically: I would buy it on any sale if you're a fan of having your brain bent by cross-cultural humor. Oh yeah, and the music's actually pretty rockin', too.

  Breed a custom frutti di marre army. Turn the seas red. Give it at least an hour; it'll reward you. It takes some time to get to the meat of this thing. It's a very japanese affair. The translation is the best kind of bad, but it is bad nonetheless. The menu controls eschew a lot of common convention. That said, they do work once you get used to them. Conversely, the controls during the actual game are just fine. Most of the confusion comes from the fact that a squad of aquatic laser food is inherently unintuitive. Once you develop crustacean instincts the controls will click. The squad mechanics are surprisingly elegant. Likewise the AI is better than you might expect. Trust your school. If you're shopping for a squad based, 4X, seafood shooter you could do a lot worse.

  This game is absolutely fabulous. Imagine an ocean Katamari, but instead of rolling things from small size to big huge objects, you slowly pick off small stuff in the sea for xp to breed or strenghthen your army of underwater minions, until you can take on the bigger stuff. Takes a little bit to get what's going on, but once you get the hang of it, it's a perfect chill game to sit back and have some serious oceany fun with. The music is dope too.

  After almost six hours playing this game, my girlfriend asked me if I didn't feel silly playing this game. Whats silly about building a pack of fishes that shoots lasers? Pros: - Interesting gameplay dinamics - Big variety of fishes wiht big variety of strategies building your pack - Satisfactory learning curve once you get the hang of it (which sends me to cons) Cons: - Weirdest camera I've eve seen. - Weirdest targeting system. - Weird maneuverability Summing up, this game is weird and silly, but is great fun.

  Kinda janky in a couple of ways, but strangely fascinating to play. You start out as one of five sea creatures, explore the ocean and battle other animals in underwater dogfights to conquer "reefs", most of which are submerged manmade objects. Defeating other sea creatures earns you both their genes and organic matter which you can use to power up the animals currently in your squad or breed new ones to use. Every animal has different max HP and weapon sets, and all of them can be either played as yourself as the leader of the squad or set as one of your five AI teammates. You could be a speedy-but-frail mackerel zipping around barraging enemies with homing scales and creating decoys to avoid taking damage, or the big and beefy cubera snapper, which boasts an impressive plasma cannon and brutal bite. The progression is interesting, in that the reefs aren't really arranged in-game by order of how strong the enemies you have to fight are, so you can very easily stumble into a reef guarded by a bunch of bluefin tuna or miniature world war 2 battleships early on and get killed immediately. However, the enemies aren't hostile until you either go near their reef or shoot them, so you basically have to explore, choose battles you think you can win, and build your squad up until you can come back and fight the really tough ones. You'll also find creatures roaming outside the reefs you can fight to grind for genes and organic matter, if the need arises. The game is visibly janky sometimes with some of its animations and spawn locations (one reef in particular would consistently spawn me above the water and make you drop awkwardly in before you can get going), and playing as any of the crustaceans is an exercise in frustration due to how cumbersome their movement is compared to the fish, but overall it's a weirdly solid and enjoyable game to play. Definitely worth picking up whenever it goes on sale if you're in the mood for something unique.
