  It is more of a neutral/mixed review, but only for returning players. If you hadn't played the original Cat Quest, you'll love this, it's a great concept with A LOT to do. If you're returning to the franchise, I have to ask: Did you like the first game? Would you enjoy playing it again? If so, then yes, buy Cat Quest 2 by all means, because it's exactly the same game as the previous. Issues: The assets/map in general are not new, it truly feels and plays as a copy pasted environment from the previous game. I can't recall a single enemy type that wasn't used in the original game, I'm sure even their spawn camps on the map are the same. At least from how I remember level progression working, the enemies are still tied in the same way (early level enemies from game 1 are still early level enemies in game 2). There were no updates to the magic system or combat system in general. The only "new" mechanic is that now you have a secondary character you control, who is incapable of taking damage while not in use, so imo it just effectively nerfed any complexities to the game. Reused secrets/jokes. If you played previously, you might remember the highest optional cave in the game, with a typically level one enemy that had maxed up abilities/levels in it. Well, that joke/secret is here as well, exactly the same as it was before. You might remember gaining the water-walking ability and walking towards the endless sea, testing how big the game was, and finding a location with the devs as a secret location. Well, it's here as well, and gives you the same rewards that it did previously. I think even the jokes they say were the same. Weak story in general. I remember screenshotting the finale/reveal of the first game, it was genuinely emotional and well paced! It was a concept that was easier to relate to (human and pet relationships and the loss of that), and was really well implemented. This game's story is less relatable (goofball dog vs cat jokes and them realizing they are better as friends in the end), and lacked any emotional depth imo. It relied too heavily on "dad" like jokes/puns, corny goofball humor. This is a petty issue, but achievements in this game are real achievements, in that it's for completing every dungeon, gaining max level, completing every quest, etc etc. However, they removed the achievements that the previous game featured, which were tied to replaying the game with difficulty modes on. And honestly, that was a lost of a good concept, and the only thing they didn't copy paste lmao. I would leave a negative review, but this game isn't necessarily bad. I loved the first one, this game is the first one reused, but with coop options added. I think if you want to buy a game from the series, and have a friend, this game is superior for that reason alone. If you like singleplayer experiences, get the original game for the story. If the devs release a Cat Quest 3 and these issues are the same, however, I'll absolutely update the game to a negative---at that point they're just shilling the same assets for profit.

  Let’s be honest; there’s a disappointing shortage of great couch co-op games out there. Back in 2020, when the world shut down and both of our jobs shifted to work-from-home formats, my partner and I had a hell of a time finding games we could play together at home. And while we did come across some great titles (Overcooked, Castle Crashers, It Takes Two, and Lovers In A Dangerous Spacetime, to name a few) it sometimes felt as though the gaming industry didn’t believe there was much, if any, crossover between “gamers” and “people who have real life friends and loved ones they want to spend time with”. That’s what made finding a gem like Cat Quest II such a treat. From start to finish, Cat Quest II was pretty much everything we were looking for in a couch co-op. Engaging enough to play for an hour or two, but still casual enough that it’s easy to walk away. Gameplay that’s challenging, but not so much that you end up raging out (I’m looking at you, Overcooked...) And it’s frikkin’ adorable to boot, with more dog and cat puns than you can shake a stick at.

  WHAT’S GREAT ABOUT IT

  (1) The difficulty scaling is fantastic! As long as you don’t try anything too ambitious (like diving into a level 50 dungeon with a level 20 character), you’ll find them to be fun and challenging without tipping over into being frustrating. (2) The story is fun and engaging without overcomplicating things. The mechanics are straightforward & approachable, too. Altogether, the perfect game for a couple of people who just want to pick up a controller at the end of the day and button-mash for a little while. (3) Lots of character customization options. Do you want to rain fire down on your enemies from a distance, or would you rather grab and axe and throw yourself into the thick of things? Whichever way you play it, there are dozens of upgradable armor pieces, weapons, and spells for you to mix-and-match however you choose. (4) Hours and hours of potential gameplay. In addition to the main story, there are a ton of side missions that range from harrowing to ridiculous. There are also secret treasures and hidden dungeons tucked away all over the place, and hundreds of roving enemies wandering about if you’re just looking for a fight.

  GRIPES & NITPICKS

  (1) There should really be a ‘favorite loadout’ option in the equipment menu. Because different pieces of gear offer you different bonuses (more health or armor / specific damage resistances / increased XP gain / etc) when you’re using them, we often found ourselves wanting to temporarily change up whatever we using to match the situation. That said, we still had our go-to equipment – the stuff we’d spent tens of thousands of gold pieces upgrading that we used 90% of the time – and it would have been nice to be able to save those preferred setups as a quick-select option, rather than having to go through the armor, weapon, and spell menus individually every time. (2) The world map menu unfortunately lacks a zoom function. And there were plenty of times it would’ve been pretty handy to see the whole thing at once. Also, unlike a lot of open-world games, there’s no way to drop waypoint makers on the map to guide you in-game. (3) The ‘King’s Marker’ fast-travel system is really hard to navigate. Like...really hard. We couldn’t make heads or tails of it and just ended up running everywhere. (4) It would have been nice to be able to select your character when you start. Instead, the game auto-assigns the Player 1 slot (Cat) to whichever controller hits ‘Start Game’ first. If that’s the wrong person, you either have to swap controllers or restart the game.

  Pawsome, purrfect, meowverlous. Very cute game, an a-rpg but lite. Everything made simple from quest, dungeon, leveling to battle. Not really complex but have some depth in it. There is endgame content but not overstay its welcome. Got all achievements too.
