Canabalt is a simple game to describe so this won’t be a terribly long review (I can hear some of you cheer). It was first released on iOS and was ported to the PC years later. Very unfortunate timing as the market was then already flooded with clones and even games that added more ideas to the concept. It never stood a chance. Known as an autorunner or infinite runner Canabalt is one of the games to popularize the genre. Released in 2009 for iPhone and iPad users it was immensely popular among the mobile gamer crowd. It’s a simple concept that ended up being really addicting. As you may have guessed the game will automatically run for you. The only user input that is required is the press of one button, and one button only, and that is to jump. When the game starts your character will run forward, to the right, while always being shown from a 2D perspective. The game will generate a random city for you every time you start the game, or (retry) a level. Since you’re running across rooftops expect to see skyscrapers, cranes, open floors and girders, among other stuff with random gaps between them that can always be crossed. As long as you have enough speed, that is. You see, there will also be obstacles on top of these buildings, like crates and chairs. Run into them and you’ll stumble, losing speed. And this can be critical as you might not make a specific jump without having enough speed. Eventually it is inevitable and you’ll drop in between two buildings or smack into a building, or something else. The game will keep track of the distance you have traveled. The goal of the game is to stay alive for as far as you can get, i.e. earning a high score. If that’s not what you want from a game then you might as well find something different to play as that’s all there is to this game really. The graphics and animations are kind of awesome. It uses different kinds of grey in order to create a unique, but somber world. And although you only see your character, glass and birds - maybe a few other things I can’t remember - these are all animated in a convincing manner. The sounds effects are quite limited, but the glass shattering immediately jumps out and comes to mind whenever I think of this game. There’s naturally no voice acting since there’s no story and the music is okay-ish, but becomes a little repetitive a little while into the game. It makes sense though, as the game is only meant to be played for maybe an hour (and that’s pushing it; most of us will play for 30 minutes or so and then call it quits again until the next day). Canabalt is one of the games that introduced infinite runners to the general public. It’s also the reason why I wanted to review it, because it’s a title that therefore belongs on my list of unique and refreshing games. I don’t think it’s a title that truly belongs on PC; for that it’s just too shallow gameplay-wise. But play it on a mobile device and you’ll have a good time for sure, even if it’s just for a few hours. One of the earliest examples of an indie classic--and an under- appreciated one at that! It's a bit like the mine cart levels from DKC1, but streamlined and cranked up to 11. The presentation (music, sound design, art direction) is near-perfect. It's amazing what designers can accomplish when limiting themselves to the input of only a single button!
The best browser flash game I've ever played.
6 years since the original flash release 'Canabalt' gets a full steam release. With a 3D, a flurry of new game modes and a 2 Player mode, this is the best version of the best flash game ever made. If you would like a sort of "trial" for this game then you can check out the original flash game here: www.adamatomic.com/canabalt/ Would fall to my death again. 10/10

This was the first mobile game I ever played. It basically invented the (now cloned to death) "endless runner". I saw this on Steam and was pleasantly surprised! This is a fantastic port. Nothing fundamentally new was added. However, the frame rate is silky smooth, key re-binding and mouse support has been built in (more than you can say for most mobile ports), crisp and clean 1080p graphics, achievements, leaderboards, and even trading cards and backgrounds! The soundtrack by "Danny Baranowsky" is a perfect mix of psuedo-retro adrenaline pumping beeps and boops. I highly recommend it, and for 2.99 it's a no brainer :) If you are still on the fence about it, here is the original bare bones flash game that started it all: www.adamatomic.com/canabalt/

I loved the flash version and i'm really happy to see it on steam. I am loving the new 3D mode and all the different kind of runs make it a game with a good variety. But, I would like something to be changed. Instead of having randomized characters to play as, you should be able to unlock a new character once you pass a certain amount of meters on a level. But anyway, buy this game.

So I've got the gale today (24/05/15) and I like it, Its fun and challenging. For a £1.99 game, its worth it, however.... This game (for me anyway) isn't too challenging. Its very repetitive and is not easy on the eyes. The graphic style is great, but not that great for this game, as you can't really see what is going on very well, especially when you are going fast. I managed to get 23/31 (74%) of the achievements, in 1.2 hours of playing. I also managed to get into 3 of the top 100 scores in the same time-span (Challenges): 60th http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=448702484 82nd http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=448702591 99th http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=448702547 Ether I'm good or the 'community' is really tiny... 23/31 Achievements
7/10 -
Good, but not great (needs more work)
Worth the money
Jumped out the window of the office building, ran across rooftop, and ran into a bomb. Well, at least we won't have to worry about TPS reports once the invasion is complete... Absolute fun.

A game that is as much about watching yourself as it is about avoiding obstacles. Heavily recommended if you can muster the attention span necessary for longer runs.

Fancy a game that's as casual as it is insanely hard? Well, you've come to the right Store page! You won't find an easier game to "learn" how to play: it literally has one button, and we can all guess what happens if your little man fails to JUMP in time and falls down a gap between two skyscrapers. But if all that sounds dead easy to you, get ready to be proven wrong, time and time again (unless your reflexes and hand-eye coordination are borderline supernatural)! Sure, it's a tiny bit repetitive. But there's plenty of game modes to choose from, each with mild variations, as well as the ability to select between a more "retro" 2D and slightly spiffier 2.5D version. Last but not least, there's the option to switch between different jump buttons mid-game, should you need to preserve your wrist for a date with mother thumb and her four children later that evening. And if that ain't argument enough, it's three bucks at full price, for fuck's sake. Sheesh, you people are a pack of frickin' tightwads. Simple, yet maddeningly difficult. Fun for all the family. Recommended to just about every boy, girl, man, woman, and probably even the family dog (he CAN manage to hit one single, solitary button, surely?)! Verdict: 9/10.
