  Playing as the Germans (the easier side) or the Soviets (the suffering one), you will have the opportunity to experience Operation Barbarossa. A few decisions between turns (weeks) will pop up, you must choose wisely. However, where you will spend time is on the various operations taking place: see what forces you have, see what is best for destroying or encircling the ennemy. Progress, fail, try again. Cauldrons of War is a nice, small game that has more depth than you may think at first glance. An enjoyable feature? Contrary to HoI4, you do not need to spend 10hours+ to see the end of it! Yes! That alone is a solid good point. But what about replayability, you may ask? Well, try focussing on a different front this time. Achieving even a minor victory will require patience and tenacity! Despite simple appearances, it has a nice level of complexity. You will have to spend some time in the internal wiki to understand which action does what (Oh yes, you do). Definitely a game I would recommend! PS: Do not listen to the chap who negatively compared Cauldrons of War to Decisive Campaign Barbarossa (i.e. pitted a €5 game versus a €45 one). The ambition is clearly not the same. Take Cauldrons of War for what it is and claims to be: a fast-paced, strategic experience with a pleasant level of historical details.

  For the historical wargamer interested in Operation Barbarossa there is a LOT to like in this little gem of a game. 1. Clean mechanics - no fussing with small details 2. Tough decisions 3. Nice historical detail - photos used are evocative 4. A challenging AI (only a draw the first time as Germans on normal difficulty) 5. Immersive - it feels like you're immersed in the war in 1941 The game is not polished - it has LOTS of spelling mistakes - some mechanics are not really clear until you try them out! The tutorial is minimal. Small flaws aside, this is a great elegant game system which could be extended to other campaigns (I'm thinking North Africa, 42-45 East Front, or even West Front 1944). The game works fine "as is" in Early Access and will no doubt be improved. It's a steal at $5! Developers of this kind of niche game need our love (and cash). Highly recommended for wargamers who want to play out Barbarossa in a couple of hours.

  I am 0-5 (on easy) in the Barbarossa Campaign as Germany, but I give the game a 8/10. I dock it 1 point because the game is only from June of 41' to January of 42', which leaves you wanting way more since the game is so good. I dock it another point because I think long-term playability seems limited. It's novel, challenging--yet not complex-- and engrossing. The price is also right for this game. A big "well done" to Maestro Cinetik! Can't wait to try the Stalingrad Campaign once I conquer this one. Aside note: I found this game due to a recommendation from a big-time Youtube gamer called Raptor (almost 1 million subscribers). He ranked this game the #1 Wargame of 2020 (and it did not disappoint).

  What a refreshing new type of game. True, it is not focused on wonderful graphics and etc., but the concept and the mechanic proves that there still is intelligent life out there on the wilds of game design. Five stars.

  Lacks the visibility and structure of other ww2 strategic games. 1. lots of strategic decisions to make throughout the game but you have no skilful influence over the outcome 2. lacks visibility of the outcome i.e. what the status is at each front in summary it is as one other user put it " it is basically a dice rolling simulator" Not for me I'm afraid

  Only put a few hours into this so far but it is great value for the price - already feels like there's a ton of depth to the game despite the surface level mechanics being fairly easy to pick up. Decisions feel impactful and there's tons of room to optimize. Definitely could benefit from a few more features on the easy end (maybe project result of actions + a few more tooltips *don't attack with panzers in winter*!), but those are minor complaints just as I'm starting out.

  I am an old wargamer who has been playing board and computer wargames for 50+ years. I highly recommend CofW. It gives you the feel of playing as the leader of OKH or Stavka, giving orders to fronts and army groups. There is no micromanaging, so that the weekly turns take only a few minutes to process. The AI, at normal level, is competent - surprising me with its moves. Each turn, you are presented with a few to many historical decisions. Based on these decisions, you may change your strategic objectives and open new fronts. The Developer is very active and is currently working on new Campaigns. Buy this game - it so affordable!

  A brilliant indie wargame that leans into the fine art gaming realm, in the footsteps of the emotionally devastating Papers Please with a hint of the operational strategy in Unity of Command. Totally abstract, one of the most interesting and compelling World War 2 games. For all of its rough edges, it transports you to the hellish killing fields of the Eastern Front. A+ strategy game. Hope this developer can get funding to flesh this out into a finished masterpiece. Even in its primordial state, this thing is destined to be a gaming cult classic. Bravo! + The learning curve is steep, but overall approachable and totally worth the effort.

  I find this game fascinating. The graphics are simple, but informative. The GUI is not very intuitive at first, but just keep clicking and eventually you get it. There are interesting choices to make but it's not always clear what effect your choice will have on the game. The Wiki is incomplete--as is the manual. I suppose that's what happens with an early access game. This is a cerebral game wrapped up into a simple package. Kudos to the developer for a fascinatingly different look at Operation Barbarossa.

  This is a highly abstract wargame where the abstractions combine elegantly to become more than the sum of its parts. For example, the game has a concept of command points each turn. Each area also has a number representing rail capacity. A rail capacity of 3 means 3 free supply points per turn. When rail capacity decreases in certain area of operations, you are forced to make decisions around prioritizing supply (via truck or horse, which is not always successful) vs. attack/movement. The player is thus forced to tradeoff meeting supply vs. achieving objectives which I think does a good job of conveying a decision that a general would actually need to make. I also like how this game models fog of war. Except for air attacks you can't directly choose which units to attack, nor do you have an exact idea of their strength (unless you recon). You also don't know exactly how tired your men are at any point in time (except for special events). When you attack there isn't an odds prediction or CRT table, but instead must rely on a feel for the situation (which you learn over time). This combines to make the game feel less coldly calculated; you are compelled to play by feel. This can be disorienting at first without concrete numbers to inform you on whether attacking is a good idea or not. Finally, the game is extremely well-researched. Other games might care about the caliber of individual weapon types, but the detail in CoW is more about high-level decision making, political events, relationships between generals, various operations, atrocities, etc. and how they impact the overall direction of the conflict. Don't miss out on this realistic, immersive game with a lot of depth hiding underneath the accessible exterior.
