About the Game

In the Kingdom of Viktor, a group of cadets is finishing their training to become knights. Not many make their way through the grueling training the school demands, but Clacier and Annette are among the top of the graduating class, ready to make their mark on the world!

However, fate has something different in store for these two friends. Mysterious beasts have been appearing throughout the land, and with many young knights falling in battle against these unimaginable horrors, it doesn't take long for them to start losing their friends from the Royal Knight Academy as well.

Even worse, while monsters roam the lands, mankind can't help but fight among themselves. Soon enough, Clacier and Annette find themselves driven to separate paths that place them on different sides of the growing conflict. How will their story end?

Your choices shape the story in this JRPG! Depending on your actions, victories, and defeats, Clacier can end up on entirely different paths. Will you be a noble knight or adopt more cunning methods to reach your goals?

Ideology in Friction is based around one-on-one encounters and features animated combat. While traveling the world, you can either take on enemies directly or avoid them by dashing past them, so there are no bothersome random encounters to worry about!

What's more, you can take on all kinds of different quests from a wide variety of NPCs. Be they townsfolk or your friends from the Royal Knight Academy, you can get to know everyone. Who knows what you'll learn during your time in Viktor?

Voiced Main Characters

The main characters are voiced in Japanese, both during story sequences and in combat!

Rich Cast

There's a huge cast of NPCs to get to know, from noble knight cadets to scheming superiors.

Huge World to Explore

Experience a fantastical world, take on quests, and fight incredible beasts!

Masterful Art

With a staggering amount of art for different events as well as animated combat, this RPG really is a sight to behold.

I bought this game just for the LOLs and porn, but ended up experiencing a wonderful RPG with great characters, story, romance, fights, art and music that just so happens to have porn in it. 11/10 never been so glad to be bamboozled.

This is probably one of the top-tier H-RPG that have been translated to English and available on Steam. Not only the gameplay is satisfying, the story is amazing, and the visual arts and illustrations are great! Usually a "H" games left out other aspects except the CGs, they often have a bland and forgettable story, but this title have a massive and well written story in it, it also not just a typical light-hearted story, to be specific and simple the story is dark. Though, I have to tell you that this game has long Visual Novel-like cutscenes/story, I personally have no problem with it as I really like the story, but some people might not like a lot of reading.
Positive Points:

Massive, deep, and well written story with many lore & events. Dark theme and has many plot twists.
6 Chapters, 2 main routes (each with different stories), 3 main endings, with several ending variations depending on stats.
2 playable characters(*).
Great CGs, has animated battle sprites and anime-like battle cut scenes.
Voiced female main characters. Even though no male CV, having a CV in H-RPG is always a plus.
Good soundtracks.
Wide range of skills and magics, unlockable with leveling up.
Good classic turn based battle, with H-content in mid-battle.
Good enemy difficulty balance.
Great maps/dungeons design.
Have New Game+

Neutral Points:

No party system, only 1 vs 1 turn based battle.
(*)The playable characters are locked to the story, and can't be changed freely.
Decent amount of customizations.
Small number of side quests, and it only available in first 3 chapters.
Still use traditional VGA resolution (not really bothering me, just remember to use alt+enter for full screen instead of maximizing the window).

Negative Points:

A few graphical glitch.
There are a couple parts where the translations is noticeably not as good as the rests of the story.
For "how much I like this game score" I will give 5/5 (I love it) - This game is awesome!

Ideology in Friction definitely has the best presentation of any RPGMaker game I've ever played. However, looks can be deceiving. Does this game live up to it's hype? Find out! (Scroll to the bottom for my summary if tl:dr) Positives: 1. Excellent art and animation. It's probably the best work I've seen in a RPGMaker game. I highly enjoyed seeing all the different characters and scenes the game offered, of which there are many. It even offered intricate animations for certain attacks in combat. These were on the levels I'd expect from an action anime, let alone a RPGMaker game. Well done on that front! 2. Enjoyable Characters. The characters were definitely the strongest part of the game's story for me. You'll find yourself quickly gravitating towards them and their banter. 3. Exquisite custom soundtrack. The soundtrack for this game is fantastic, especially it's voiced tracks. They're a treat to listen to and I could definitely see myself doing so outside of playing the game (With the exception of one Rap track, which I found to be oddly out of place). 4. Voice Acting. The game features optional voice acting for the female main cast. I don't speak Japanese, so I can't tell if it's "good" or not but it's there if you're into that sort of thing 5. H - Content. Plenty of that type of content (All of which is optional) that is well complimented by the game's art and sound effects, with a plethora of stills and animations. Lots of variety with them as well 6. Branching paths. Depending on whether you lose certain boss fights (Or choose to lose them), a myriad of branching paths will open up. This eventually comes down to two main paths you can take that offer completely different scenes and multiple endings. Mixed: 1. Mixed Story. I feel the game's actual plot starts out strong, really hooking you into the world, each individual character's situation, and sets up for things that could've made for some interesting devices later. However, as the plot goes on, it progressively gets weaker. There are plenty of twists and turns, but I found most of them missing rather than hitting. Once I came upon the 11 or 12 hour mark, I honestly stopped caring. 2. The Writing. The writing is definitely on the weaker side. As a plus, it is very well polished and the game's comedy does stick for the most part. However, the game does try to beat you over the head with "We're dark and mature". It does this very immaturely IMO. The game tries so hard to be "disturbing" that it only ends up coming off as ridiculous and unbelievable (Not in a good way). This is further reprimanded with the overuse of the "Profanity = Dark" law (Which, it in fact, does not). Don't get me wrong, I have no problem with cursing but this game must uses "F*ck" more than a teenager in public high school (Which I would know all about, being a former teenager who went to a public high school). 3. Eh Sprites. Despite the game's fantastic busts and stills, the sprite art pales in comparison. It does feature some well done custom sprites for the major characters, but the rest of the NPCs and tiles are made from stock assets. Not necessarily a bad thing but an unimaginative one. Negatives: 1. Visual Novel or RPG? I get that this game is going for being story-heavy but it honestly gets ridiculous with how long dialogue and cut scenes go on for. It's tolerable at first but you will find yourself not even reading it as you get into the later points. The kicker for me is that a lot of these cutscenes are actual fights between characters! This game has a combat system, why not break-up these long drawn out scenes with a fight? Madness. Also, speaking of the combat system... 2. Snoozefest Combat. To put it simply, it's just too easy (Which is even more funny, since the game has an "easy" mode. Can't imagine what that's like). Early on, combat basically boils down to finding out which element the enemy is weak to and then spamming it. However, after a few measly hours, you won't even need to do that much. The damage enemies do is so insignificant that using any of the game's dozens of skills is pointless. Simply spam "Attack" and you'll win without issue. Boss damage can be as low as 0, which is hilarious. There are no strategies utilized by any enemies, no special states or mechanics that you'll need to manage around. No, this combat is honestly the worst I've played in a RPGMaker game and that is saying A LOT. In conclusion, I wish steam had a neutral option for reviews since there were definitely parts of this game that I enjoyed and I can even see myself possibly coming back to it. And if you're here just for the H - Content, you'll get exactly what you paid for. However, as a game, I cannot recommend it. The combination of subpar story, weak writing, and god awful combat made this game a very shallow experience that I could not bring myself to even finish.

A relatively polished reboot of Dark Elf that borders on self-plagiarism. If you've played that game, you're getting "the same, but less amateurish". There's three distinct "routes" through the game, about 4 hrs of mediocre RPGMaker JRPG combat each. Uncensor patch available on the publisher's website; but does require e-mail registration to login as per usual.

If you've played Dark Elf you know exactly what to expect

The premise, setup, gameplay, etc, etc is pretty much identical. This game has far more polished graphics - featuring some decent animated vignettes - and a load more going on, but nothing interesting in the way of depth.

The game's plot routing system works to its detriment

The "throw fights to see H-scenes" gameplay is particularly cumbersome in this game, with it expecting you to throw a certain number of boss fights to choose between the main routes, combined with a totally opaque "corruption" mechanic. It means you need to check a guide to have even a vague idea of why some obvious content seems inexplicably unavailable.

The game's content isn't particularly good

There's a load of extreme fetish content included, which you'd think would appeal to the target audiences; but there's so many deficiencies with the game experience itself that it totally fails to hit the target for any of them. As is typical for the genre, it falls into the ludonarrative pitfalls of dull JRPG combat having nothing to do with sex or eroticism. It involves walking the female protagonist into obvious moral hazards just to trigger h-scenes. There's pretty much no narrative connection between the various events in the game, so all the sex scenes are largely divorced from wider story-telling and thus any emotional context or significance. It's got the same issue with crappy under-developed sex-combat mechanics that are totally incongruous with the rest of the game experience, and feel thrown-in and bolted-on for no real reason.

You've seen this game before a hundred times

Makina; Tina;Ambrosia; Meltys; etc, etc. All with the same disengaging bland JRPG fantasy setting; the same bland disengaging JRPG combat; the same tropes, characters - even the same scenes. If you're desperate to see yet another iteration of your favourite hardcore fetish content churned out soullessly and by-the-numbers on the mediocre eroge treadmill, this game's exactly what you expect. It offers absolutely nothing above and beyond the basic standard this genre caters to.

This game will be fine for some people, and some call it a classic. It does seem somewhat like a classic, in terms of the melodrama. It is like a melodramatic sword and sorcery anime with sex patched in. If you are into certain things, you will like it. The CG scenes are almost entirely filled with veins, fluids, massively oversized breasts, and sharp muscle outlines, therefore not many actually erotic scenes unless those are turn-ons. If you are not into most of those things, you will likely agree with this review. There is a truly excruciating amount of text in the storyline, much of it filler. After reading through some of it, I decided that I would either stop playing the game entirely, or Control-skip the rest of this text. Sometimes I would be holding down the control key for 5 minutes to skip the frightening amount of story text. Therefore, I recommend getting something heavy enough to hold down your Control key, then fixing a meal or taking a shower, then seeing if the text is fully skipped yet. If you want to see alternative routes, this will come in very handy, once you learn that you have to lose 3 times in the right ways--losing in other ways will still put you in the Knight's route. As I said earlier, this game is mainly a RPG-Maker adventure, with some more or less ugly or gross sex (and a precious few actually erotic scenes) if you have the patch. This does not make it all bad. Annette is actually wonderful, and if the game was only about her and had an expanded sex-combat system, it would have been top-notch. Instead, it focuses on boring Clacier who does not get to do anything fun until the game is almost over, unless you work hard to lose frequently on purpose. I cursed the gods when the adventure switched back to Clacier, even though she is cute if you like breasts half as large as she is. There are some sad missed opportunities with Annette that would have made this a far, far, better game, if only the game had ever been designed with that in mind. The combat is nothing special. With Clacier on normal, it is at best the usual sort of Kagura RPG-Maker combat with nothing to distinguish it, and you are unlikely to lose if you are paying attention. On easy, all combats are trivial. This is where melodrama is not always good: every combat has its own melodramatic flair, but almost all combats are boring and therefore do not earn that flair. There could be more to see in repeat playing, but I truly could not bring myself to replay the boring initial parts of the game just to find out if there was more.

Nope. This game is a waste of time and not worth $25 even with the patch. (This Review Contains Mild Spoilers) (I played the Knight route) Let's get down to brass tacks. You were probably interested in this game because of certain large assets. Unfortunately, they are not the focal point of the game. That alone is a rather big issue, but it gets worse. The actual content of the game isn't good, either. First, the story. It's good... unless you're old enough to be playing this game, then it's not. The story takes a turn for the worse about midway through, where essentially everything becomes an ass-pull (meaning: "when the writers pull a narrative development out of thin-air in a less-than-graceful fashion"). A character's race magically changes, multiple people come back from the dead for no reason, an army of monsters spawns infinitely, there's syringes filled with macguffin, the list goes on. Things aren't much better before that, with writing fit for edgy teenagers and plot devices only ever good for 1 scene only, but the second half of the game takes all the worst aspects and turns them up to 11. The gameplay is even worse than that. There is no challenge. NO challenge. Depending on the game and the person, this could be a good thing, however... this essentially means that Ideology in Friction is actually a visual novel. Not an RPG. This is a visual novel interlaced with annoying RPG Maker segments. Also, almost none of the attacks have special animations. There's a short one for the basic attack if you finish a monster with it, then a short one for a couple of end-game moves. None of them are particularly good or flashy compared to what you would see in virtually any other game, and they don't show off the characters' bodies very well, either. Remember, the price on this game is $25. The visuals are so-so. All moving animations are bad. Flash-animation bad. The still pictures used in various scenes are much better done... but also very few in number. Even "action-packed" cutscenes will frequently only use one or two pictures for the entire scene, and each scene can go on for a while due to the visual-novel pacing. The worst thing about this game, though, is that most of the H scenes are heavily focused on appeasing R fantasies. If you're not into that, you won't be seeing much since you have to go through that if you want to see more of that side of the game. Due to the lack of challenge in this game, you have to force those scenes by losing on purpose. If the ensuing scene makes you feel bad... well, that's too bad for you. Enjoy your below-par visual novel. If you play this, I recommend beating it once and then unlocking the rest of the scenes from the main menu.
