Just a disclaimer I'm aiming this review towards people who aren't mechanics and want to learn about cars and how to fix them up. That was my original intention with getting this game. To start off my car has had recent issues So I got to a point where I wanted to learn how to fix mechanical problems in the car myself without the need for a mechanic who could scam me. So at first last month I stumbled upon Car Mechanic Simulator 2021. I didn't know these types of simulators existed, so I downloaded the demo and played it, and while I liked the idea of learning about all sorts of different cars and I learned a few things about parts names and maybe where they are located..But other than that, something was missing honestly. Fixing up junk cars is cool to me but i just felt it was lacking in teaching me about working on cars in real life. I guess just pointing your mouse at bolts and left clicking to screw them in engines was kind of meh after 2 hours. When I read reviews for CMS after I saw people mention Wrench. So I looked up this game and I felt iffy about it too cause it focused on race cars. While I do love cars and love especially fast ones, I was looking for a educational experience too towards normal cars, and CMS had a mod of my real car for that game. But what caught my eye about Wrench was the reviews noting how much attention to detail this game has. Like ridiculous levels of attention to detail. Plus it's built for VR too. CMS 2021 was not. So I went ahead and bought it. So I started in the tutorial and it explains the controls at different tables you approach as you progress through this tutorial hallway, and then I got to the task of taking apart a braking system, and then needing to put it back together for bonus start up money. Now again I have replaced a tire and added oil to real cars, but nothing like this. Also, while CMS also has brake systems to take apart and put back together, honestly if you're green and genuinely trying to learn, Wrench has the attention to detail at a very high level. But also I realized what was missing from CMS was the VR immersing you INTO the game. I was holding a torque Wrench. Game explained i needed to fasten the bolts back to a perfect notch, including adjusting the pressure gauge on the torque wrench.. As a guy who never held one of these ever, and looked up on YouTube what it does exactly, and WHY it's important, after that 9 min video the difference in learning between CMS and Wrench just in this tutorial to start with clicked immediately. In this moment I learned already something very important with working with bolts and nuts on a car that CMS would've just made me left click with a invisible pointer. Something that honestly can mean the difference between really fixing the car or breaking a bolt, or worse, your wheel just comes flying off.. oh and there are varying bolts and nut sizes with different torque wrenches in the game needed so you don't break them from over pressure. I also spent over 2 hours trying to take apart this brake system and put it back together since I had zero clue what I was doing. But in that time in VR I can peak around the sides and all around it and really GET into the job to try to solve the problem. When I finished and got to the career mode, I ended the game to go to sleep and I thought I saved, but I didn't...it was my fault though I was tired. So the next day I had to click on New Game again and I breezed through the tutorial. But that was only possible because I had already learned alot about a brake system the night before that I never knew about. From being able to poke my face around the thing and get real close. Being immersed and fastening the bolts (correctly this time) and studying it up close. CMS has zoom options but it's just not the same at all. Not to mention the lack of detail to things all the way down to different bolt sizes. I said that already but all of that is extremely important. Ignore the thousands of parts CMS boasts. Having your full and undivded up close virtual attention working on a car project versus floating around a car with a mouse and keyboard is no comparison. Plus you'd feel more confident when tackling a real life car problem with training from this game versus a mouse and keyboard game. So that's my serious take. I wish you can mod in or theyd have a dlc to add normal cars into the fold but they probably will. Either way it doesn't matter cause cars pretty much all contain the same needed components. So if you're genuinely trying to learn about car repairs and get as close to hands on experience that you can get without doing it on a real car first that you could mess up, this is the game to get. Granted nothing beats real life experience, but for 20 to 30 dollars for the wealth of car knowledge I already got, I'm a lot more positive now that I could at the very least replace my brake pads from virtual hands on work lol. Very well done game.

I have now realized that ADHD, a passion for cars, some weed, and a VR headset will make you do oil changes on strangers cars for no real life monetary gain. I love it.

due to the current pandemic the college i study level 3 automotive has been closed and i am now only getting online theory lessons as we have to work from home. i looked at wrench as it was a program installed on the college VR steam library. i play this game using mouse and keyboard and i am amazed by the accuracy of procedures in this game. there is a wide range of tasks to perform and constant Maintenance to carry out. It's as close as you can get to working in a real garage while at home. Thanks to everyone involved in developing and creating this game.

I followed a real life youtube video instead of a ingame tutorial and it was completely accurate down to the number of bottles of fluid I would need. Devs are super responsive on discord and great with updates. However in its current state, it will require some outside knowledge or a fair bit of googling to figure things out.

I love the Car Mechanic Simulator series, but wanted something more challenging and more realistic, so this game came up. It's like the difference between Ace Combat and DCS World. The "best" part is when you get done doing a major job, look around and go "Huh, where did these washers come from...?"

Best educational game for our high school Fab Lab/Makerspace we have EVER seen!! We are a small school and don’t have a lot of room to be taking apart engines. Plus, it is fun for kids to make a mess the first time they take apart the engine, which we can let them do in VR. This game is extremely accurate and fun for students.

Giving it a no due to developer/community/EA breakdown. The game as stands is at best a demo. They acknowledge that the game needs a complete rewriting of code. No updates on steam requiring one to sign into the discord to see progress. Progress as of August 2023 is a never released "major beta update" and the only other things shown is some work on impact wrenches and wheels. Given the development speed has slowed down significantly and the developers have run into challenges I recommend not investing into this game until they bring some substantial updates to this store platform, release a general bug, optimization, or qol update why the work on the rewrite or in someway show this is not an abandoned project on the road to a Wrench 2 EA announcement. Early Access storefront Post and response. WHAT THE DEVELOPERS HAVE TO SAY: Why Early Access? “We are choosing early access to involve the community in developing Wrench. Early access will also help us better understand our audience and adjust Wrench's content and game mechanics to fit the players.” FAIL: The development has gone radio silent except in their private discord where dissent is blocked. Approximately how long will this game be in Early Access? “We expect early access to last six to eight months.” FAIL The last update was over a year ago and even being generous with the unreleased upcoming major beta from discord it has been 6 months since they announced a delay. How is the full version planned to differ from the Early Access version? “The early access phase will be used to tune user experience and expand the available content. The full version will feature more content, more sub systems of the car will be serviceable, and the library of aftermarket content will be much larger. Players can also expect more interaction polish as Wrench progresses from early access to full release. The full release will mark the baseline for the game where we feel there is enough content for the game to stand on it's own. Post release, expect continuous updates with more content.” FAIL game development is months for single models and will realistically never be content rich and the devlopers have abandoned communication and updates before 1.0 so post release is not likely. What is the current state of the Early Access version? “The core features and main gameplay loop are in place. The Bauer Catfish and Exomotive Exocet are nearly completed with fully serviceable Engine, suspension, and braking systems.” FAIL The core cars use the same engine and the controls make the game harder than it needs to be. Bugs and optimization are also lacking. Will the game be priced differently during and after Early Access? “Wrench will be discounted during Early Access.” How are you planning on involving the Community in your development process? “The community will drive the direction of UX changes, prioritize development order for new functionality, and help drive decisions about what new content we build.” FAIL the developers are radio silent here and moderate all but fanboys on the discord.
