Vermillion - VR Painting Funciones

If you've ever watched a painter at work, you've undoubtedly felt the urge to try it for yourself. But getting an easel and expensive supplies is a serious commitment. Vermillion gives you professional oil painting equipment with all the tools you need to create beauty on the canvas, without the messy living room.

You can paint seated, standing, or even lying down. Use the floating web browser to learn to paint with the full length step-by-step tutorials, alongside your favorite artists on YouTube, or project reference photos on the canvas.

Vermillion features realistic wet-on-wet color mixing, undo, layers, and a wide range of simulated brushes. Developed with the feedback of both traditional and digital artists, you're sure to get the fun of oil painting without any of the frustration.

Once done, share your masterpiece as an image in up to 8K. Or, create a beautifully varnished 3D model export for your VR home, Sketchfab, or VR social applications.

Vermillion is a VR painting simulator, bringing the full analogue joy of oil painting into the digital world. Get the unrivaled sense of accomplishment from creating something beautiful on the canvas, without the messy living room. With the same ease-of-use as real life, it is accessible to both complete novices as well as seasoned (digital) artists. Mix up your desired color on the palette, make your mark on the canvas with the wide range of unique brushes, and get going on your first (or next) masterpiece.

Note to Cosmos owners: Please follow the instructions on the support page to get your controllers working.

FEATURES:

Analogue color mixing

Vermillion allows you to blend colors as you would with real paints. Dip your brush into multiple colors, and mix a new color by whisking the brush on the palette - and yes, yellow and blue make green!

Integrated web browser with canvas projector

Never painted before? No problem! The easel has a web browser right next to it, allowing you to paint along with your favorite artists on YouTube for the first time without needing physical equipment, and giving you convenient access to the internet's vast library of learning resources and reference material.

Vermillion comes with an hour long in-game paint-along teaching you how to paint a cute robin - you'll hardly believe what you are capable of!

The browser can even be projected onto the canvas, so you can easily trace your reference. You can also display local images on the browser.

Designed for wet-on-wet painting

Vermillion is made for wet-on-wet painting. It mixes color not only on the palette, but also on the canvas, allowing you to create perfectly smooth gradients with just a few strokes. Use a dry brush to blend colors further, or to move paint around to create a variety of effects from reflections to grass.

Layers

While Vermillion is made to be the ultimate wet-on-wet experience, sometimes you just need to paint on another layer for detail work. Which is why it's fortunate that there is currently support for four separate layers!

Fine control over every mark

Exert fine-grained control over your brushwork through the pressure with which you press the brush into the surface. Use the hand steadying tool to compensate for the lack of a physical canvas to rest your hand against.

Distinct brushes

From the two inch brush all the way down to the rigger, there's a brush for every occasion.

Sharable

You can export your finished painting as a 3D model to use in your VR home, share through Sketchfab, or use in social VR applications. Vermillion also offers up to 8k image export of your finished piece, which can be used for canvas prints!

Made for streamers

With a controllable spectator camera to offer great views of the process while streaming or recording, as well as full LIV support, you'll be sure to create amazing content.

When you can paint and export in 8k, it makes sense to have this. I spent 30 minutes learning how to paint and went at the canvas with all I got! I smashed the brush on it and violently created a beautiful masterpiece. It is mine. I then exported it to 8k jpeg and printed it. It is now framed and hanging on my wall.

This is just... literally everything you could want it to be. Want to just treat it like a pure oil painting simulator? No problem. As long as you know how to pick up an object, everything just works as you would expect it to in real life. Mix colours, paint in layers, blend, dry brush, wipe your brushes clean on a nearby cloth... everything behaves the way it should, so there is literally no learning curve. A total VR novice will be painting in minutes. Prefer to take advantage of the digital artifice? Undo/Redo, clean brush with a button press, save palettes for future use, paint in four digitally separate layers, project images and video from the internet onto the canvas, reduce on-canvas paint mixing with an slider. All optional functions, but there if you need them. Seriously, if you've ever wanted to get into oil painting but been limited by cost, space, tools, or just frightened of making a mess: this is about as close to the real deal as you are gonna get. This is such an incredible application that it feels like it justifies the entire medium of virtual reality in a way that few others do.

VR has the uncanny ability to provide "The Next Best Thing". Take something like Eleven. Sure, it is not real table tennis, but it's really close and you need neither a table, nor someone right next to you to play. Many of us will never get to drive high powered race cars on circuit, but VR simracing gets us one step closer to that. Blueplanet and other similar apps allowed us to visit places that we would never otherwise visit. In the midst of the pandemic, apps like VRChat, Neos, Altspace has provided surprisingly earnest social interactions to all of us. Everyone seems focused on when the next Alyx for VR would be. But in this wait for the next traditional game, perhaps they forget that what makes VR special is not the virtual, but the real. And those several paintings I've made in the last two weeks with no prior experience are very much real. Vermillion is the Next Best Thing to oil painting.

As an oil painter, this has saved me thousands of dollars. As an artist, this has saved my sanity when I have no studio space. As a teacher, I can get people trying to paint without a huge investment. This is a fantastic simulation of oil painting with many computer quality-of-life benefits on top of it all. I enjoyed it so much I made a bunch of tutorial videos to help people get even more out of it. So yeah, Vermillion is a fantastic piece of software. Strongly recommended.

I LOVE Vermillion! This is a realistic oil painting simulator for VR. You start off in a classy Victorian room with good lighting and get a tutorial on how everything works. It was very thorough and easy to get started. You have an easel you can adjust and a canvas you can make whatever size and dimensions you wish to a certain extent. You also have a palette for mixing any color you need and a set of brushes with a cleaning rag and thinning solvent. You can also adjust the rotation of the brush and where your hand is placed along the handle. If you have no idea what you are doing or you want to learn more there are videos you can watch to follow along and paint with inside the sim on youtube or whatever other website you wish to use for a reference. It suggests a video of painting a robin or following along and painting a Bob Ross landscape but you can pick whatever you want. I suggest checking out something on how to mix colors. You can find one in the bookmarks tab. The dev is active, super helpful, and has created a masterpiece of software. Vermillion has become one of my favorite VR games. I can easily spend 6 hours painting and totally lose track of time and I don't have to worry about buying supplies, brushes and paint drying out, or cleaning everything every time I want to take a break! Newbies will find it a great space to learn and experiment and seasoned painters will find that although it isn't 100% exactly like real life it's damn near close enough. This will end up being one of the VR titles I spend the most time on for sure. It's something you can play forever. This should be in the library of every VR user who enjoys making art. https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2757990937 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2779313514 https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2782093019

Edit: The creator has rescinded the EULA changes, and artists are once again able to make money off their own art. This software is now worth a full recommendation. I love Vermillion. It's really a great piece of software. Even as someone with little art background and no experience painting, it's enjoyable to sit and maybe follow a youtube tutorial and make a nice picture. And it's easily the most accessible (financially) form of painting I've found. I had fully intended to give it a glowing review and recommendation. So why the thumbs-down? "The User must not earn or seek to earn money from the User Creations and must not exploit the User Creations for any commercial purpose" That's from the newly updated EULA. It's a line that, per Vermillion's creator's own words, exists solely to sell a to-be-released "pro" version. Artists shouldn't have to jump through legal hoops to make money from their art. Pro versions should sell on the merit of their advanced features, not arbitrary legal restrictions. Stand in solidarity with artists and insist this EULA be changed before giving money to it's creator. When and if this is fixed, I'll update this review to the recommendation the software itself deserves. Until then, just play around with one of the many free painting vr games out there and save your money.

Having done both actual oil painting IRL, I can say these things: Pros: - Its cheaper than a semester in art school -Its cheaper than having to buy actual oil paints, mediums, brushes, canvases, ventilators and space to house and use all the stuff in. -For those with Asthma or difficulties breathing/sensitive to linseed oil or other chemical mediums, you will only be breathing heavily and feeling winded from your own VR headset and sedimentary lifestyle. -The Platte knife has a nice swishy sound when you wipe on the rag. -You can "technically" learn painting basics if you never plan on touching an actual brush after this. Cons: -Lack of turpentine smell and brain damage will limit your creativity and improve your respiratory health. -The painting studio feels too decadent and spiffy, Feels like its never got used much after post impressionism, even with the rent subsidized. -All the brushes paint like cheap synthetic...which I guess is actually good with those whom only work in digital?....So its a perfect union of annoying me or people whom need tactile sensations. Conclusion: I am recommending this game because I -think- there is going to be additions later in the future for this. Also numerically the pros outweigh the cons regardless of personal/subjective weight.
Experienced on the Oculus Quest 2
You can view my initial impressions review & gameplay here: https://youtu.be/kMom5Wb0Y_8 This is a great oil painting simulator. You really get the joy of oil painting on canvas with none of the inconvenience. The app is simple enough that you can start painting right away, but it will definitely take a long time to master. You have your canvas which you can move around and re-size, along with a brush stand, color palette, and a YouTube / menu stand which you can move each stand around for your perfect setup. Your creations are automatically saved and you can even create layers. You can export your masterpiece afterwards and upload them to Steam (like I did). You can watch YouTube painting tutorials or you can search for photo stills to draw inspiration from within the app. Game is running on the Unity Engine. On my RTX 3080, I was getting a steady 90 frames per second. There is no locomotion or turning. The only graphical setting was turning on paint anti-aliasing. There is a left handed-option. I only experienced one bug where I was automatically moved away from my painting spot. I really enjoyed using this app. It does bring the joy of oil painting to VR and it is the best app at doing so currently. I do hope more environments & brushes are added. I would also like to see some templates. And the ability to draw first on the canvas. Lastly, I hope they add more in-depth tutorials, the current one is good for learning the basics, but not for much else. Rate 8/10. I bought this on the release sale and it's worth every penny IMO.
Please consider joining my Steam Curator Group. You can join here: https://steamcommunity.com/groups/Oculus_WMR
As someone with absolutely zero artistic skill and having never painted before irl, I still absolutely love vermillion. You ever want to paint along with bob ross without buying loads of shit and making lots of mess? Vermillion is absolutely for you. Also the dev is fantastic, incredibly active on discord and takes lots of feedback from the community.
