My name is You and it's the only unusual thing in my life 機能

This is a novel with multiple plot lines, in which you only get to witness only a couple of days of a character who’s name is You. It may seem that except for his name, his life is nothing exceptional. That is if it wasn’t for a chain of events that fluctuate between his daily routine and an existential terror of reiteration. What is the most important part? It’s you and You facing inevitability.

This is you, and this – is You. Both of you have something in common – exceptionality in a monotonous moment of time, when meaningless decisions have to be made. Or meaningful, to such an extent, that there is nothing left once they are made. Who knows what awaits you around the corner – will you go to work in a continuous, 'almost-holiday' fever or wander in a labyrinth of crooked mirrors? Except for his name, it seems our character’s life is nothing more than unexceptional – there’s no room for miracles or cobwebs. The room is filled with office papers, some vaguely familiar family members, an ailing story of sensation, a couple of dropped lines and a sharp drop – a circle, inside and outside of which you and You wander. Open the letter, pick up the phone, speak up or step aside – and this story will gain new fractures and reflections.

Features:

  • Unique atmosphere and visual art that fully convey the gloomy mood of the novel

  • More than 10 alternative endings

  • Special soundtrack for each finale

  • Offbeat structure of the plot: the full story can be put together, only if a player lives through every possible situation

I like short games with many achievements. I left it open for an hour so it took about 1 hour to discover all endings. It would be better if they had summarized the story when we played a chapter again. A little bit more backstory would be great but the story gets interesting as you try to choose different paths. Tbh ending musics were really good, now it's time to find them.

This has nothing to do with the review but... Is anyone else having a weird glitch where you definitely own the game, played it in its entirety but Steam says you don't own it when you go to the store page and buy it AGAIN just so you can leave a review? It's really bizarre but honestly, fits the motif of this game. It's a visual novel very literally. You are read to about a dude named You and you get to make choices that dictate how the game will play out. It was a nice little break from my own humdrum and definitely give it a thumbs up even if I apparently don't own in. XD

I really want to recommend this game, but I can't. There's too much unexplained content and most of the endings do not make sense. There is also a complete lack of skipping features or saving features, although saving isn't that big of a deal since it saves each chapter. However it gets really tedious to manually click through every line of text to get back to the choice in order to choose something else. The game is fine for the first few runs but really gets stale after that and feels more like a grind than an actual story. 4/10

My Name is You and it's the only unusual thing in my life is an interactive visual novel where you "read" about the life of a person named You and the things that happen in his life depending on which choices you make, There are several ways to get a "The End" depending on the choices you make. I think this is a very interesting story, I really recommend giving it a try!

An interesting little experiment of a game. It reminds me in narration and story of the animated feature What a Beautiful day, which is one of my favourite movies of all time. If you want a deep dive into the mind of a suffering man then check this one out. It was quite entertaining.

Well, it's not free, it's not really good, it's not really impressive. Try it if you really love narrative adventure (just text, a few choices with different endings). I bought it on sale and did a few run, but the story really never gets nowhere. It's just trying hard to look mysterious but in a cringey way. It's like memento + kafka written by an high-schooler tryhard. The worst thing is that to try see all the endings, you have to play it many times but there is no fast forward or skip options for sections you have already see. You can barely choose the chapter from which to start. It's not my jam, I wouldn't recommend it if it costed more, but it's cheap and you might like it.

Good art style and interesting storytelling, I recommend it.

There are two kinds of non-linear stories: those where you choose your walkthrough among a number of similarly valid ones and those where your goal is to stumble upon a "true" story while exploring narrative dead ends. Both are fine. "My Name is You" is the second type — but the usability, unfortunately, belongs to the first type. It has no fast forward, and you have to click every slide to continue the story. Want to see a different path? Reach it again manually by replaying the chapter. QoL features are not the most important aspect in games, but in text-based stories they kind of are, since the game has very little apart from text, music, and choices. And you are not meant to play it once — there is imagery hidden in mutually exclusive parts (a la "Dear Esther"), and the game expects you to explore them all... while tediously re-clicking slides. As for the story itself, I liked both the plot and the writing (in Russian). The detached, half-surreal story of a terminally (?) ill, suicidal man who is unsure if he's dying from his dreams and sees and/or kills his possible nonexistent double reads like a mixture of Alexander Grin, Kafka, and Camus, and I mean it in a good way. There are oddities here and there, but the non-linear nature of the story makes it even more fractured, which fits the genre. So I do recommend it, at least in Russian. But for crying out loud, next time please make a fast forward button. P. S. My playtime is low because I played a different version of the game that no longer seems to be available on Steam.

if you ever asked yourself what would it be like if kafka would have developed an interactive story, here is your answer.
