HOLD ON! Before you go on reading reviews and whatnot, let me tell you something really quickly: ignore pretty much anything that's posted before the may 30th 2019. Why? Because Krita 4.2 came out today and they fixed over 1500 bugs and glitches and so far it's looking super good. On top of that, most of the bad reviews are very old, from a time when the Krita team wasn't able to update Krita through Steam. This has been solved now and updates come out at the same time on Steam than their website. Now, I've been using Krita for a couple of years. Let me tell you, it has come a looong way. It is a labour of love and you have no idea how much work the Krita team and other contributors put into it. I was overwhelmed to see this! I found Krita because I was looking for a software which could do a very varied range of things that I needed for a long, complex project... and after trying a couple of different software... boy was I surprised. Krita had literally everything I needed and more, and they keep on updating it, adding more and more useful features everytime. They listen very closely to their community and respond well to suggestions and criticism. Do I recommend it?? HECK YEAH. If you're not sure, try the free version from their website, which is 100% complete and 100% free (I purchased it on Steam to get automatic updates and show support)... you won't be disappointed! It's very intuitive, but if you're feeling lost there are a TON of tutorials on Youtube on how to use it (careful with the date though, as you may find very outdated stuff). Thank you, Krita team, and keep up the great work!! You guys made my literal dream software and I am ever so thankful for that.

This is a great digital painting software that has a lot to offer. Included is everything you would need to get personal or even professional work done. You can flip and rotate the canvas like in SAI, there are perspective tools to guide scene creation, a plethora of usefull brushes (speedpaint sketch being my favorite), not to mention all the filters and photo manipulation that you would find in photoshop. I love that I can resize the canvas without interfiering with the drawing. I love that every brush can be used as an eraser with just a toggle key. It's as fast and light as SAI with all the functionality of bulky photoshop. I would love to see a more focused direction though. Having all this functionality can sometimes get in the way of whats important in a program like this. Getting straight into the work with clear intuitive controls and minimizing any bumps that get in the way and allowing the user to get a hold of the full functionality with little effort. I find that less clutter and more user control via hotkeys and slidders the better. This is aimed at visual people after all. I would also like them to take advantage of modifier keys. Thankfully they are adding the ability to switch between brushes with hotkeys. No information on when that will be, but it's this kind of functionality that speeds up the painting process. Less time fiddling around in tool windows and more time spent with your eyes on the canvas. The dev's have been very attentive during the entire early access process of this software. I've personally provided lots of feedback that I've already seen results from. A big thumbs up to this dev team and the fact that they do care about the user and want to shape Krita around our needs. Gemini already came in with a good foundation of standard features that you expect to see in a digital painting software. So theres a lot to build on for them going forward now. It still needs a lot of work and I hope people will continue to provide usefull feedback. Krita Gemini has really benifited from the early access.

If you're an ex-photoshop user like me who used photoshop for animation/digital design, then you will love Krita. Buy it here and support the amazing devs, and stop giving your money to a horrible company like Adobe.

DISCLAIMER : Aside from auto-updates, the Steam version has *no* additional features to the free version. This is just a way to support the devs. Best free art software. It's an amazing jump up from GIMP, with way better UI and brushes.

There's a lot that can be said about this software, some good and some bad. So I'm going to list the Pros and Cons of the software as well as a tl;dr at the bottom. Pros: The wrap-around feature which is surprisingly well implemented and easy to use The brushes are well done and almost any brush you'd need for a drawing or painting is already implemented If a brush you need is not implemented you can tweak every brush to your hearts content and save it as a preset The perspective grid is easily created and edited to create near perfect perspective drawings Photoshop-like layers which will make any photoshop user feel right at home Excellent developer response (Read below if you want more information) Don't have enough money to buy Krita Gemini? Go to their site and get the free Krita Desktop, same software almost except no Steam support and a few features aren't there but other than that the same thing but free. (But buy Krita Gemini as soon as you have enough money) Cons: Unable to animate within application Small images sometimes don't work (For example 128x128 px) Too many pros, not enough cons. Developer Response: I'm the only person having the problem in the cons list and they responded and talked to me one on one on steam in order to understand the problem so they can try and fix it ASAP. It's like everyone is having the problem and they want to fix it quickly. GREAT developer response and I think better than what I've ever seen in my entire life. Sure it took a few days for them to actually see my review but I'd rather wait a few days and get this kind of customer service than wait a few days and they do nothing or not even get a response in general. Edit: Figured out how to use pen pressure, I guess my tablet was just screwing up so NOT THE PROGRAMS FAULT. With pen pressure lines are AMAZINGLY smooth and I'm beginning to like this program more than Photoshop as it's MUCH cheaper and just runs better in general. Tldr; Excellent customer service, excellent tools, and professional brushes make this an EXCELLENT buy.

I really wish there was either a “neutral” or a “confused” option when writing reviews. I’ve been using Krita for 5 hours now. This time has left me feeling a mixture of optimism and confusion. I got interested in Krita because at first look it seemed like it would be a perfect replacement for Paint Tool Sai. Sai and I go way back but it’s tool limitations (no easy rulers, no animation options, no proper gradient options, no option for adding text, no diverse pre-set tools etc.) have left me wanting for more. Krita delivers everything that’s missing from Sai. It has a nice simple ruler feature, textures, gradients, the option to add text, complex yet useful layer system, a heap of nice pre-set tools and special brushes that will let you create simple backgrounds in mere minutes. There is a tool for creating simple animations, a multi-brush painting option, bases for multiple types of comics and more. In theory Krita is (or has the potential to be) a perfect tool for a visual novel artist like myself. In practice… Not so much. I love all the tools and features I mentioned above but I have to say that Krita is not a very user friendly software. The program is cluttered with tiny nameless icons and even the layer system looks very complicated when you compare it to Sai. I wish I could easily right-click a brush tool to access it’s settings like pressure, stability, opacity etc. but I can’t. I don’t seem to be able to create and name custom brushes easily, something that’s a core element in Sai and very important for digital drawing in general. All of the above is probably manageable but my biggest problem with Krita surfaced when I attempted to create a piece of smooth, clean lineart. I use two professional drawing tablets, a Wacom Cintiq Pro and a Wacom Intuos Pro. I started out by trying the Intuos and I was somewhat surprised. No matter how high I ramp up the ppi, my lines look slightly pixelated/ragged on the sides and ends. The Cintiq worked even worse. Please note that the Intuos Pro I have is a 500 euro tablet and the Cintiq Pro is a 2100 euro tablet aka this problem is not something that can be blamed on bad equipment. I determined that this has to be due to a line stabilizer issue (or the lack of a stabilizer altogether.) I searched the internet for help on how to adjust brush stabilizer settings and didn’t find much. I searched for possible solutions and applied possible fixes for 2 hours straight and gave up when I wasn’t able to draw clean lines. There is a possibility that this issue is easily fixable and I was just very unlucky to not find the right community page about this. But that does not change the fact that stability is without a doubt the MOST IMPORTANT option when it comes to drawing and creating lineart. Those options should be accessible in the middle of the software, somewhere in the upper toolbar next to the brush size, not hidden under options of options of options. When inking, you have to be able to adjust stability from fast and harsh to smooth and “laggy” in seconds or you will end up losing a lot of work time on useless hassling with the settings and drop menus. It might not seem like a big deal unless you draw professionally but every second wasted is away from something else. For more information, I direct you to Paint Tool Sai that has this down perfectly. I was hesitant to get Krita due to it’s “mixed”- review status. Upon closer examination I found out that most of the negative reviews complained about the lack of user friendliness and how complicated/difficult Krita was to understand. “Haha, young ones! If I survived Windows 3.11 times I’m sure this puny piece of software is no match for me!” I thought to myself. There was even one guy claiming that his entire day was ruined when trying to use Krita. I laughed at his statement, feeling too confident while being blissfully oblivious to how angry and frustrated I would feel only 5 hours later. I would like to give this product a negative review. I won’t because: 1) The developer seems genuinely interested in bettering his software and I’m afraid being blasted with a mountain of negative reviews could take away some of that spirit, robbing Krita of the potential it so obviously has. 2) Krita has a lot of useful features even though it only costs 10 euros. Paint Tool Sai costs 50 euros and it only has about 10% of the features Krita has. If Krita was a proper tool for lineart, Sai would be rendered obsolete. When all is said and done, I feel like Krita is good for painting and background creation but not a very good tool for lineart creation. I sincerely hope that this will change in the future.
