Emersion galore!
This game, omg this game.. it truly represents everything that was right (and wrong!) with gaming in the 80's. Yes, yes, I know it got out in '95 (I can read, and now I want to speak to your manager! (omg, don't mind me!)), don't bother me with facts: this is about the impressions. All fun put aside here: I am seriousy impressed how well this game managed to uphold itself on Windows 10 thanks to Steam and DOSBOX (in case you don't know: DOSBOX is an open source project trying to keep DOS ("Disk Operating System") alive for all of us.
Gather the planets, defeat the Sun (spoiler!)
I hope I can be forgiven but.. Sometimes games had a better intro than their gameplay and that was honestly almost the case here as well, from my perspective, but ... although it it repeative where corridors and such are concerned this game also manages to irk quite some suspense as well, if you're open to it. Yes, the animations look dumb, I agree, but move yourself past all that and try to absorb this game... I honestly was just as much blown away now as I was 20 or so years ago. Though I cannot deny that part of that was from the realisation that this still runs today ;)
About the game
Ok, ok... you are in a maze of corridors. You need to find the planetary artifacts and then defeat Khul-Khuum (aka: the Sun) and free both Stonekeep and yourself. Sounds shallow? That's because it is! I hope you enjoy walking into tight corridors ;) But at the same time... this game was a classic of its own, I have this on CD somewhere in a movement box but now.. I can actually play it again without digging up my storage compartment in the basement ;) If you feel appealed to the screenshots then this is for you, if the screenshots make you wonder "eew?" then don't bother. OMG, Stonekeep on Steam?! :) Thanks for reading!

I used to play this game all the time with my grandfather. I understand that its seen as a bit lacking compared to other crawlers in its time, but its worth a play. It has some seriously fun and funny moments, and is fairly pleasant on the eyes. I would note that the soundtrack is seriously underrated - it's excellent, and full of dread.

Stonekeep is a game created by Brian Fargo of Wasteland and Fallout fame. It's a dungeon crawler in the style of Ultima Underworld and Eye of the Beholder and other similar games. What set Stonekeep apart at least at the time was how the game mostly conveyed it's environments through fmv. This is the part of the game that aged the least gracefully, and you can always tell what you're fighting is a 2D sprite. It's also grid based so it doesn't control like something like Doom. The entire game is however in real time so it is relatively easy to get into compared to other games of a similar style. The story to Stonekeep is a little confusing and much of the backstory to the game was told in a novel that shipped with the physical release. Which went into great depth about the different deities in the game's universe, the backstory of them and so forth. The basic gist of it is one day one of the gods goes insane and destroys the protagonist's home. So he journeys into the ruins of where his home once stood to vanquish him. The plot is fairly basic and the story is only really saved by the presence of some fairly entertaining characters and somewhat redeemable fmv sequences. Unfortunately as ambitious of a project Stonekeep was at the time it's not exactly a game i'd recommend easily to people. Unless you're curious, or you're a fan of old school dungeon crawlers and 2.5D games in general. This version runs in Dosbox so it should run fine regardless of which computer you throw it on. Naturally it runs much better if you replace the version it includes with a Dosbox SVN build.

Stonekeep is a 90's tile-based dungeon crawler and is also probably the most memorable game of my childhood. While there were certainly far better games of the kind around that time, some of which I consider to be the best games of all time, Stonekeep is a solid entry into the genre. The plot is centered around the character Drake, who as a boy witnessed the people of Stonekeep being destroyed by an evil God named Khull-Khuum and is saved just in time by a Goddess named Thera. Drake returns to the ruins of Stonekeep 10 years after these events took place to defeat Khull-Khuum. There was a novella released with the game back in the day which goes into detail about the lore of Stonekeep and is also quite a good read. Stonekeep features large dungeons in which you fight monsters, find keys to access new areas and uncover secrets. The combat is pretty average and often requires you to cheese fights but functional and very solid nonetheless. The difficulty the game presents is mixed, it can be insanely hard if you go into combat trying to chop your foes down head on but much easier if you mix melee attacks along with throwing items such as arrows and rocks at the enemies. The dungeons themselves can get pretty monotonous which is why this game is probably best played in shorter doses if you get bored easily, they do vary through progression though. The art direction is superb and one of this games strengths, the 2D sprites are easily some of the best of that era and the environments are extremely well presented, though as said before, dungeons can get very samey after a while until you progress to the next. The voice acting is also pretty amusing, although some may find the high fantasy stuff pretty cringey and a weird contrast to this games dark atmosphere. Despite being very good for the most part, the game has a lot of flaws, one of them being the inventory system, requiring that you scroll down a list to select which items you want to use or equip each time you open it, it's time consuming and clunky and the amount of potential this game had to be more than a decent dungeon crawler is painful, you can see this had a very complicated development cycle and they didn't implement all that they had on paper, what started out as being a 50K project ended up costing over 5 million dollars to develop. All in all a solid dungeon crawler, I'd recommend this to people who may have fond memories of this game from back in the day and those willing to try something new, although with caution, it's reasonably accessible but some may find it a bit monotonous for their liking.

To think I loved this game at one time. Don't get me wrong it's still great in many ways and was way ahead of it's time; however the combat is too hard, you don't heal over time and potions are few and far between. My suggestion would be save often and if you lose too much life after a battle - reload and try again. I personally don't have time for that but the game still holds a place in my heart.
