it's an alright spelunky ripoff, but all the text is written as if its for babies. wouldn't be surprised if there was a diaper item with the description "a diapey wiapey for your poopy woopies". that was cringe, and for that reason, i've refunded the game and I hope you do too. edit: the dev rekt me so rebought the game and changed my score edit: edited again because i just started playing this again and this game kinda rules. there's a lot of crazy stuff in it.

Anthony Case is essentially a Stephen King of rogue-lites, and probably the most self-aware game developer when it comes to this not so humble genre that dominates the indie scene. This game is clearly inspired by Spelunky but I think we can safely say that it has plenty of features that make it a unique experience. What I love about Caiysware games is that he understands the genre so well, it becomes a liability, I think the developer is too smart (as you can see with 2% of players that found the final boss). Just a warning, this final version of this review is going to be pretty biased and perhaps justifiably so, I very much love this game, in more ways than one, it reminded me of 'no hand-holding' classics that are so dear to my heart. I bought it about a year ago on the first day of early access, I knew it was something really special but I still could not grasp the full picture because there is so much hidden content. Even for a genre veteran like me, this game had more than a few surprises. As with most games in this genre, Spirits Abyss is about replay value and unlocking more variety that does not directly affect the power progression - you can unlock new modes, characters, zones and so on. To find the final boss you have to beat the game on 3 different modes, while each new difficulty has more floors and individual leaderboards. Additionally, the game has a very neat card game but you have to unlock additional creatures by playing the rogue-lite. Furthermore, the game also has this weird adventure like mode where you have to bring back items from your runs, I mean it's really amazing how much **** he managed to fit in this little concept. What I love about Spirits Abyss is that even with all of that content, the developer did not overlook even the smallest details, there is so much love and personality to every aspect of the game, not to mention all of the hidden trinkets. Arguably the best 'risk vs reward' elements the genre has to offer (perhaps borrowed from other games, but expanded upon for sure), there are so many randomized events that allow you to wager your resources and micromanage your consumables to a greater effect. Almost every item in the game has some kind of niche purpose, ironically except the map that I never look at because it seems redundant. One of my favorite items is the magic wand that can either put you very high on the gold leaderboard or completely **** you up, the RNG is frustrating but in a good way. Each character has some unique perks that are further expanded upon with unique class items that you get between each stage. Even though some characters are stronger, each score board is separate so I never felt bad about playing the trashy clan, if anything it is a challenge. I just love experimenting with each clan and finding new ways to push the gold score, every time I think I maximized the numbers I find new ways to improve it.
Pros:
+ a ton of content, secrets and replay value + several characters with unique clan items + card minigame and additional exploration mode + strong risk vs reward elements + gameplay is great, no hand-holding + individual leaderboards + awesome visuals + nice achievement support
Feedback:
Lack of Orginal music - the music in this game fits it really well, I tend to identify the soundtrack with this game, but unfortunately it's one of the few things this developer does not do himself. I understand that you don't have the time to do everything as an indie developer, but if there is one thing that removes some character from this game, it is lack of original soundtrack. Maybe not every song needs to be original but I would like a song by Anthony Case. Accessibility of content - this is not a problem with the game but I think the progression is a little cryptic unless you really put the time in. I think Case just makes the games for the roguelite nerds and if you are that person it works great, if you not, you might have a hard time. It's a shame that developer put all this effort into the game and then you realize 2% of players have the achievement for beating the last boss. When some of the content is based on RNG you have to be someone that wants to replay this game a lot to see it. There is a lot of content, but you do have to work for it. (apparently there is a cheat to unlock everything, but hey I don't buy games to skip them) Potentially frustrating difficulty curve - perhaps my only objective problem with the game is that difficulty in some areas makes no sense. One of the starting areas is actually a lot harder than some of the later content, so you can see why some people may not have a good time learning the game. I don't have a problem with how hard it is in general (probably it is for most people), but I just think there is room for improvement and just making the game a bit more friendly. Overall Thoughts: 10/10 Even though I can nitpick many things about the game in general, I can understand every decision that developer made and ultimately I think he made a very special game. Most of all, Spirits Abyss has so much personality and content to offer, but you have to put in the time to find it. It's my personal favorite rogue-lite ever made, it made me laugh so many times, and even after 50+ hours I still find ways to enjoy it. Maybe it's not for everyone, but for what I look for in this genre, it has everything that I love. Beautiful game and the developer is amazing at taking feedback, auto-buy all his games from now on. With over 1,200 hours in Binding of Isaac, almost 400 in Spelunky HD, and 100% completion in them both, believe me when I say that I appreciate roguelikes. In particular, I vibe with downward exploration games such as SteamWorld Dig, Noita, and Caveblazers. This game is a criminally underrated addition to that list. I feel confident that this game will surge in popularity once a few more Spelunky content creators come across it. It's very clear that a lot of love and care went into designing this game, both aesthetically and functionally. Please give it a shot before it becomes popular and cringe. :)

I have a great respect for games that manage to be compellingly weird, because it’s a tough needle to thread. I can’t even really say what it is that separates a game from being the interesting sort of weird and the plain obtuse kind. That’s why I enjoy Caiysware games so much, because they manage to put out games that genuinely have their own alien logic to them. They also look great and play well, and Spirits Abyss might be their best yet. Taking a page from Spelunky and scribbling neon nonsense all over it seems to really work here, especially once you start digging into how broad of an experience it is. Atop a distant mountain there is a chasm, said to lead all the way down to the gates of the Resting Realm. Legend has it that a child consigned to the abyss beneath the blood moon may return wielding the power of the undead. Apparently your mother thought that sounded like a pretty good deal, because she chucked your naked ass down that hole right quick. Beset on all sides by restless souls, undead wraiths, mutant spores, and far worse things, your only hope is to descent to the mythical gates and pray the legend wasn’t some fever dream invention. But what will you find down there? And will it give up its terrible powers so easily? The answer to that last one is no, of course. Spirits Abyss is functionally cut from the same cloth as Spelunky, with each level being a large area of destructable terrain filled with monsters, loot, and traps. You’ve got to get from the top of the level to the exit pit at the bottom, but you’ve only got a few hearts and the threats are rather adept at taking them from you. My first half-dozen attempts at the game didn’t see me escaping the first level, as I learned the extremely fatal language of enemies and traps. Turns out a lot of stuff in this game explodes, or contains enemies when it might have loot, or is absolutely ready to kill you if you do the wrong thing. Part of the confusion is because yes, this is a Caiysware game. All the text is in their kitschy house style of pseudo-babytalk, and goodies often look just as threatening as baddies. Compared to Spelunky the gameplay is less technical, thanks to the absence of fall damage and a much higher proportion of powerful abilities. Your basic attack can be powered up to remarkable levels with perks offered between levels, and it starts out pretty strong anyway. Bombs are plentiful, jumps are high, and enemies aren’t really dense enough to stop you from blazing through a level if you want. You won’t want to, for the most part, because of all the weird, wonderful features levels have that can push your power level to even crazier heights. Really the main learning curve is sussing out what is super dangerous and what isn’t, and once I had that down I was able to beat a run pretty quickly. There’s not quite the challenge or compelling mayhem of Spelunky here, and the devs seemed to know that because they papered over that fact with tons of modes and secrets. You’ve got several classes to challenge the abyss with, including alchemists, ninjas, and miners, each with different weapons and bomb delivery systems. Aside from the normal 10-level descent, there are also challenge modes, online score attacks, horde battles, and an actual card battling game with some pretty neat mechanics. Add to that a wealth of special levels and collectibles sprinkled throughout, and it still comes out as a pretty compelling package. Tied together with colorful, crunchy pixel art and solid sound design, Spirits Abyss is a great addition to the ranks of platforming roguelikes. It takes all the important parts of Spelunky and uses them as a base to wander off in different directions, and the result is charming, challenging, and compellingly weird. This one lacks the depth of mechanics or challenge that some might, but more than makes up for it with the variety of experiences included. I still don’t fully grok what’s happening or what that ending was, but I’m more than happy to keep abyss diving to see what else I can find. Did you enjoy this review? I certainly hope so, and I certainly hope you'll check out more of them at https://goldplatedgames.com/ or on my curation page!

Like Spelunky had a baby with a Metroidvania, but minus the excessive stunlocks, instant deaths that occur regardless of all your health, unavoidable freak accidents, and other frustrating aspects that made Spelunky """hard""". Spirit's Abyss is still very difficult, but feels far more fair than any other rouge-like I've played. The different areas, gamemodes, and secrets keep the game from feeling repetitive and the aesthetics are top notch. Definitely lands somewhere in my personal top 5 games.

"Praise be to the moon of blood................ALL HAIL THE BLOOD MOON!!" https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2950051285 So sometimes you come across a game that just grabs hold of you by the scruff of the neck and just doesn't let go and this is one such game!! Addictive and just seems to add more and more to it's self every time you play and unlock new game modes and items!! Now looking at it you may think "Look at those graphics.........not impressed by those" but as I have said many times in the past "Great Graphics Do Not Always A Great Game Make" and this is one game that really personifies that quote and belief!! https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2949974650 And to be honest the developer who made this game also made Boneraiser Minions which is another game that just like this took me completely by surprise with just how good it was and how much content the game actually had!! So would I recommend this one then?? !!YOU BET YOUR REJECTED THROWN DOWN A HOLE LITTLE PERSON I DO!! https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2951948753 "You are our only hope child and only you can stop him and end this cycle of...........DREAD!!" (!!One of my favourite moments was trying to help the Old Fart escape his predicament..........you'll just have to play it to see what I mean..........HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!)

Insanely slept on. Spelunky + Megaman on a fever trip. Immensely impressive amount of content and polish. Less spiteful than Spelunky -- the instant deaths are gone, but the gameplay remains difficult and intense. My preferred platformer roguelike.
I made a longer, more in-depth video review here: https://youtu.be/K5WsmIZ70hg
Spirits Abyss is a hidden gem of a roguelite. It its similar to Spelunky with a more of an arcadey and combat oriented feel along with a dark tone and it has a ridiculous amount of content. The exploration is very similar to Spelunky. You can however wall jump and climb up ledges and you are a little bit more floaty then in Spelunky. You can find a ton of cool passive items or different equippable gear like jetpacks, shovels, magic wands, and more. Each area you go through is super different and unique from each other in terms of how they look, what enemies they contain, and how the layout is like. And the progression in this game is fantastic. You have 5 secret characters that you have to unlock via various things in the world. You also have alternate areas that you unlock in different ways when you find the different locked paths as the unique areas between the levels. You also have a ton of gamemodes, including seeded runs, a kind of free play mode with a kind of hubworld, an arena based survival mode, and even a freaking card game. So the game has a ridiculous amount of content in the game and because it is all unlocked by doing different secrets in the game instead of just doing something boring like having an xp bar that gets you new unlocks it makes the world and all the areas you play in feel dynamic and it makes it feel like there is constantly new secrets to uncover and unlock and a lot of games have a really hard time pulling that off but Spirits Abyss does it flawlessly. So if you are a fan of roguelites and/or Spelunky I would definitely check this game out. There is an insane amount of value for it's price.

Tons of content in a small package. Multiple characters to play as and lots of gamemodes to play. So much stuff to collect and unlock. Lots of replayability. The music is great. The gameplay is the perfect hybrid between Spelunky-like & Metroidvania, though it's a little tough to get used to at first. The boss and enemy design are awesome. I freaking LOVE the world building, story concept and artstyle of this game. It very much has a super dark and mystical, but somewhat light-hearted "childhood nightmare" vibe that I really dig. The developer (I believe it's only one person) is awesome and really listened to feedback while this game was in early access. He really knows how to have fun with the development process too. In fact, someone made fun of the childish writing (you experience Spirits Abyss' dark dream-like world as a child btw, so it makes sense why the writing is childish), saying something along the lines of "Dipey-wipey for your Poopy-woopies!" while mocking the game. The developer's response to this rant? He added an item into the game. But not just any item. It was, in fact, a diaper. Its item description? "A Dipey-wipey for your Poopy-woopies!" The ranter conceded defeat, and a good time was had by all, laughing about the incident like there was no tomorrow. It was great. For only $5, this game is a must play. 9/10
