About the Game

A community of Vupfox have fled their homeland to seek refuge across the perilous north sea. Only a few are fortunate to survive the journey and have crashed upon an unknown island. This fertile isle offers sanctuary, a chance to rebuild. But something is not right; any attempt to sail away results in crashing back upon the island. Ominously, along the backside in the cliffs, lies a narrow slot canyon. A menacing arch sits at the canyon’s entrance.

In this city builder and tower defense strategy game, it is up to you to guide the few remaining survivors. Progress from just hoping to survive to ultimately overcoming the challenges with an efficient and prospering society. Design new settlements, task the colonists with jobs, manage resources, and architect a defense that can protect from whatever comes from beyond the gate.

BUILD YOUR COLONY

  • Settle the islands: Build your way across 6 hand-crafted islands.

  • Survive the environment: Each day, season, and generation faces tough challenges to overcome.

  • Research: New buildings, resources, and citizen efficiencies will have to be researched in order to face the trials ahead.

  • Construct a production machine: Balance building construction, jobs, research, resources, and citizen needs to create an effective society.

DEFEND YOUR COLONY

  • Maze the invaders: The invading forces blindly seek their targets to destroy. Use this to your advantage and create a clever labyrinth to maximize damage.

  • Make use of the elemental gems: Mining the island has unveiled powerful elemental gems. These gems can be used by an array of offensive towers, applying unique elemental effects to the invading forces. Conversely the elemental gems can be applied to boost towers, applying unique buffs to nearby towers.

  • Master elemental synergy and nullification strategy: Elements boost the effect of neighboring elemental damage effects, while nullifying opposing elements. Strategic use and placement of these elements will be paramount to creating a dominant defense.

This game is excellent for civ building and tower defense gamers. I am a seasoned (72 years old) player of both. The combo of both makes the game intriguing and challenging. It has depth without drudgery. Folks who do not play either of these genres may like this one just for that reason. To me there is a third aspect included - research. Which path should you choose first. There is no formula - one choice may be the best this go round but not in the same sequence the next time. And there will be a next time as you progress from map to map. Deciding how to allocate workers is another juggling complexity. The Dev's UI design is a thing of beauty. Easy to use, informative info tips and an effective warning/informing system. Whatever your gaming proclivity I encourage you to give this one a try. It is just that unique.

The mixed city builder and tower defense game certainly had promise, but monster waves are too inconsistent. Some waves melt quickly to your defenses while others are impossible to bring down. Soon, the incoming waves of mobs have so many hit points (hundreds of thousands) that individual tower placement is simply irrelevant. More specifically, we are talking about attacking waves where each mob has 300k HP and 100k shields, and strategy simply does not matter when each of your towers only do roughly on the order of ~150 damage (even when buffed with multiple boost towers and elemental synergies that boost damage). Even with an extremely long windy path that doubles back on itself in zig-zag form to maximize the use of existing towers, the only "strategy" in the game is basically to spam as many walls to build a maze, turning the walls to towers as your resources allow, and hope and pray that the dice is kind to you in getting the gems you need to get damaging synergies before the difficult waves arrive. I've had multiple games where I had a number of mines being worked on to produce gems yet the only gems that I kept getting were ones that I did not want, and repeated use of statues to pray to get different gems failed-- and kept giving me gems that I did not want. [Note: Once you get a gem that you like and want more copies, you can insert it into a greater mine to upgrade it and increase the chances that you will get more gems of the same elements in the future. But nothing-- nothing in the game will help you get gems of elements that you do not already have. The best you can do put unwanted gems into statues and--once again, roll the dice.] Very disappointed because the city building in the game is fun but there is simply no strategy in the game that matters. Ultimately, your success and failure in a given level boils down to your luck on random gem spawns, and that is a travesty in the fundamental design of this game.

Solid base building and tower defense. A logical evolution of either genre that has been rather untouched. Response dev, lots of updates.

I wanted to like this but their are too many artificial gates in the game. Population only grows once per year. So all your settlement growth plans are pre-mapped so their is no flexibility. This limits everything in the game and makes the game pace way to slow even for a tower defence game. You essentially ignore the settlement for most of the year until the population grows and you decide what jobs to allocate them to. The rest of the time you spend waiting around for the citizens to build the maze way too slowly.

This is a very well done city builder with a tower defence attached, and kind of gives an odd feeling of being like a modern version of Outpost 2 of all things. Gameplay is sort of like an odd hybrid of Tropico 4 + Element TD with mazing. So the basic concept is your ships were fleeing their homeland, and there's some kind of curse on this island that acts like a magnet and caused them to crash on shore. Most of the ships didn't make it, and of the one that did get through in one piece, only a few of your fox people make it out in one piece. You have a year to try to build up and get some homes, farms, and basics going after cannibalizing your crashed ship for parts, because a year later, an ancient gate awakens and starts spitting out demons and other monsters to destroy you. If you can make it through, maybe you can research the curse and be able to build a statue to break it so you can get off the island and prevent others from having the same fate as you. Now let's get into the specifics. It's a fairly hard game, and pretty tightly balanced, but it's also pretty fair. Though there are a lot of luck-based mechanics, they individually don't have a huge deal and are usually mitigated pretty well. For example, once your fox people hit 8 years old, they have a chance to start dying of old age, but you can do stuff to significantly reduce that, and on my last play through I managed to get one to live all the way to 20 - arrived on the crashed ship and was the sole survivor to the end. The point here though, is that there's some luck, but it doesn't really come in until you've sort of got yourself situated, so for the first few years old age isn't even an issue you need to worry about at all, other than to try to keep your fox people in good shape so that they live longer, and the bonuses for better life expectancy also boost their chances of producing new children, so it's kind of obvious you want to do this either way early on. As a game in general, I'm especially pleased with a lot of small, but well thought out design choices. For example, this is the single, only game I've seen that has done "walkers" for a city builder that hasn't sucked at it. The AI is actually really well done, and though you don't get specific individual control over each individual fox, you do get more than enough control to tell them what you kinda want done. Things like setting individual buildings to low/medium/high priority, being able to assign jobs quickly and easily, and in particular things like massive quality of life boosts where there's a generalist job that will fill in the gaps and provide logistics support. What that means is a miner will carry their own stone or ore they produce to a holding spot if it starts overflowing if they have to, but the generalist will do it for them so they can focus on actually mining more. A builder will do exactly what you say to build, but a generalist will consider oh, I have to carry this stone from the mine anyway, and this building is RIGHT HERE, so I may as well just drop it off at the construction site rather than dragging it over to the stockpile on the other side of town. Even better yet, anyone who's done their job for the moment begins acting as a generalist. Farmer's done planting all their crops for this season? They help around with everything else that needs done instead of just milling about being useless. These are things that just sound obvious, that they should be in EVERY game, and yet they aren't. They SHOULD be, but they're not. The design in this regard is excellent and quality of life considerations are taken into account all over the place routinely. Bugwise, there are very few. I'm about ~25 hours in since I played the demo first to see if I'd like it, which clearly I did, but that means the first little bit wasn't counted as play time because it was technically played on the demo rather than the full game. In this time though, the game has only crashed one single time, and I had a single oddity where a child somehow got the researcher job and couldn't do any researching because they were in school, while one of the adults was assigned the job of "child" instead, which... was kind of awkward, and sort of bad, but the developer's pretty active and seems to actually still be fixing things so I assume this won't be in for long since I'll be putting in a bug report after this review. We'll see how long it takes, it's a small, intermittent issue, and those are a pain to track down normally but we'll see. As a city builder, it's fairly solid, various resources are available, they're all renewable with a bit more effort for trees later on. There's a pretty clear progression of getting wood going as the starting amount in your crashed ship is enough to get started, but not much more than the basics. Soon you need a stone mine, then need to start worrying about charcoal, mortar, iron, steel, and eventually gems, with food coming in various stages as well, such as raw food, decontaminating the raw food, proper cooked meals, ale, and then full feasts and celebrations. More quality of life features are present here, telling you if the building research unlocks will require a new resource to use it, so you don't waste time trying to unlock a schoolhouse only to discover, oh yeaaaah you need mortar to build it... well fortunately you knew in advance so had already researched building mortar and had a bit on hand being produced in advance so it's all good. It's not the prettiest city builder, but your layout does matter for things like having spots to heat up in the winter, or making sure your foxes are in sight range of pretty statues and flags so they maintain hope and well being over time, so although it's not as in-depth of a city builder as say... Sim City or something, it's actually not a bad city builder at all and much more complexity would get in the way of the tower defence part of the game. As a tower defence, it's not the most complex one in the world, and the "mazing" part doesn't really matter so much, but rather it's fairly picky on building towers so that they can cover each other as you eventually need 3 different elements overlapping field of fire so they increase the effects of each other, such as like fire + terra (earth) + lightning, if all three effects are on a target at the same time they each benefit the others, making fire go from 3dps per stack up to 24dps per stack instead. Since there are a bunch of different gem elements, but you're kind of limited to only using 3 next to each other because of how it works, that means you have a bunch of extra leftover gems you aren't really using right? Well, you can try trading them in for a random new one, or put them into boost towers that aren't affected by that conflicting element penalty, so you can put those extra gems to use as area of effect upgrades to the other towers. There's also an interesting mechanic where if you leak some enemies, they do more damage new times, but are easier to kill, so it acts as both a death spiral and a safety net at the same time. A small leak can actually give you time to shore up your defences and fix the problem easier, but if your tower placement and setup isn't working, then it'll just kill you off quicker rather than wasting your time with false hope. Overall, it's very well designed. There are some minor issues such as the rare bug mentioned, or a bit of praying to RNGesus (literally at a statue, even) for good gem drops early on, but the game's balanced so that the luck issue doesn't really show up until about the time you'd naturally probably have about 1 of every gem anyway and it's easy to get more once you get the first you need, and you won't need gems for quite a few years into the game. If you like games like Factorio, this is more city builder than factory, but same kind of basic concept with a different specific flavour. Try the demo! More games should have those anyway!
