RPG Maker 2000 Features

For the first time, RPG Maker 2000 is available in English! Since its debut 15 years ago, the beloved game-making engine has introduced untold amounts of users to the wonders of game design and continues to be a powerful, user-friendly tool. No other engine in the RPG Maker series comes closer to the classic late-80s/early-90s feel, with graphics and a battle system that hit the nostalgic sweet spot while still offering huge opportunities for innovation. With a brand new translation and updates, this is the best version of the classic engine you’re going to find!

Key Features:

-Classic Front-View Battle System: Recalling the earliest days of the console RPG, this vintage layout hasn’t lost its thrill. Creating fights can be learned in minutes but there is major potential for surprising, dynamic battles once all the different conditions and events are mastered.

-Straightforward, User-Friendly Interface: RPG Maker engines are designed to be as flexible as possible while still being user friendly, and RPG Maker 2000 is one of the earliest examples. Virtually everything in the engine is managed through a simple point-and-click interface. All of your game’s characters, enemies, skills, animations, and equipment are created and stored in an easy-to-navigate database. An in-depth event system contains dozens of functions to help make your story and world come to life, such as custom messages, character movement, player choices, special effects, and more. Plus, RPG Maker 2000’s powerful map editor is extremely easy to master, allowing you to craft your world tile by tile with unprecedented efficiency!

-Retro Aesthetic and Huge Customization: RPG Maker 2000 allows you to create games that look just like ones from the storied history of console RPGs. However, the possibilities go far beyond the graphics that come with the engine. If you’re feeling especially creative, RPG Maker 2000 allows you to import custom 16-bit graphics, including character sprites, tilesets for your environments, battle animations, backgrounds, and more! The engine is also loaded with a variety of catchy midi tracks and sound effects for your game; custom WAV and MIDI tracks can be added as well.

-Share Your Game: Want to share your creation with the world? You can export your creation in a portable file that can be played on ANY Windows system! Plus, games made with RPG Maker 2003 can be sold as long as you have the appropriate rights and have followed the registration procedure. With some hard work you could become the next great indie game developer!

RPG Maker 2000 is software used for creating your own video game. This software is very easy to use and fun to play around with. It hold ups for its age and there are still games being created with it. Certain aspects are outdated but it really can give a retro feel to your creations. RPG maker 2000 can be used to learn the basics and mechanics of RPG Maker. There are much newer versions of this software which are absolutely magnificent. If you find yourself enjoying this game and want to take it up a notch, consider purchasing RPG Maker MV or MZ. The creations in these two titles are ENDLESS.

For the first time in 15 years, RPG Maker 2000 is now officially (and legally) available in English! I was surprised that it would have actually had a release outside of Japan. Anyways, the software itself is quite basic and similar to RPG Maker 2003, but has a similar battle system to the Dragon Quest games. The faces, tilesets, and battlers have different graphics compared to 2003. Is it worth it? Compared to VX Ace's price, sure. However, I have nothing negative to say about it.

キタ━━━━━━(゚∀゚)━━━━━━ !!!!! The legendary, mythical, epic, amazing RPG Maker 2000. The one that truly started it all. Mere words cannot do justice to just how amazing and enpowering RPG Maker 2000 is. Truly a legendary engine and worth every single penny. I've waited many long years for this, and seeing RM2K3 come out just several months earlier raised my hopes and anticipations for RPG Maker 2000. Needless to say, I insta-bought. (≧▽≦)ノ

This was the gem that started my passion for game design. Although simple in its own right, and possibly the least powerful of the RPG Maker family, it is, in my opinion, the best way to "get started" with the RPG maker brand. It is perfect for beginners who don't know where to start without all the complex scripting and advanced features the later versions had. I am so glad they finally released this as a bonefied english version. It's really worth the price.

A very common problem with this new version of RPG Maker 2000 is that it lags. I created a new project, filled the initial map with grass, placed the hero and started the game. The result: Lag. This does not happen with the old version Don translated. I have Windows 10 and a QuadCore 2.8GHz. This problem has been known for quite some time, but nobody seems to care. I also hate that it can't run without steam. Why would they do that to this super-old software that has been copied all around the world for about two decades? There is literally no point in copy-protecting it.

According to dev: this is the last and latest version of RM2K. But it still has a lot of bugs! Can you believe how terrible the version is? Let me explain: -The worst of all, enemy's battle animations can't display in the game! -The game is totally unplayable in fullscreen mode because of serious lag. -Flying option (for enemies) is not available. -Flash Screen and Flash Event commands can't work correctly. -Shake Screen command will cause a screen stuck bug. -Special effects such as Rotation and Sine Wave in the Picture Settings will cause the same screen stuck bug too. And the manual of RM2K is also a terrible one. At least a third of the contents of Event Command List are still Japanese language. Some options and texts belong to RM2K3, you can't find them in the RM2K.

Sure it's a nice program, but the music needs to stop repeating itself. I really like how you can make your own JRPG-styled titles. You don't need code to use the engine, which makes it easier. I do have to point out that I am having issues with my soundtrack. It refuses to follow the loop I'm using. Instead of skipping the intro of my battle theme, it keeps playing the intro then the part that was supposed to be used. Also, it keeps repeating the victory theme. Other than that, I like it!

I've been using RM2k since about 2006 and I was 10 years old when I released my first game in the engine. It's that easy to learn to use it, but it doesn't mean the engine has its limitations when you try to make more complex games. After a thousand hours spent in this Steam version doing a remake of my very first game, I may be able to review it in detail and explain most, if not every feature present. Importing custom content: It has a simple content import/export tool that's easy to use, but it doesn't explain what the file requirements are, when you get an error. Images have to be saved in 8-bit color mode and it accepts MP3 music in this version, which is nice. Movies are just a wreck, whether you're trying to import an AVI or a weird MPEG type file, it's just not worth it, because it increases the project's size greatly and most devices won't play the movie in-game. You can even hide content from players using the '.xyz' format while importing image content. The Database: Very simple and easy to use. You can create your own main characters, skills, items, enemies, terrain for the maps, edit the basic battle, menu and stores vocabulary and change the game's default BGM and Sound Effects for various stuff. My only complaint is that you can put some mid-battle events, but you can't call premade "Common Events" in them, so it's not modular in that way, in a programming point of view. Map creation and drawing: You can create hundreds of maps and I didn't find a limit yet. Every map is a separate '.lmu' file, so it's good for when you have to send just a small fix to your playerbase, or something like that. You can also define finite areas whithin the map where players can battle different enemy groups, or define the entire map to have the same enemy groups, but you can't enable/disable the areas or change which enemy groups appear, using events. You're presented 3 layers of map drawing: a lower, an upper and an event one. The former two use the terrain Chipset, while the latter uses Charsets for NPCs and you can use them for map drawing as well, like a third layer of terrain. Map events and programming in general: You don't need to learn any programming language to use RPG Maker. The engine uses its event-based logic to dictate what happen when a player talks to a NPC or walk to another map, etc. It's good to know boolean logic if you want to make more complex events, though. Here is where RPG Maker 2000 shows its true limitations, unfortunately. Simple things like multiple math equations in a single line are not possible, even though you can achieve that with a bunch of "Change variable" commands. Condition branches with "OR"s are non existant, so you'll have to copy commands to achieve the same result. Loops doesn't have a condition to leave them, so you'll have to force a "Condition branch" and "Break Loop". There were situations where I felt like programming in Assembly because of the goto and labels. There are no object-orientation or pointers AT ALL (and that's my biggest complaint). When you set an event to move, there is no option for it to wait until its movement is completed before proceeding, so often you'll have situations where you set a "Wait for all movement" command and the event will freeze because there are other events moving in the map (like enemies with random movement or moving toward the player). Conclusion: It's a neat engine, great for people who don't know programming at all or programmers looking for a challenging development project. Keep in mind that the game will only have a resolution of 320x240 (and you can scale it up to 2x, so 640x480) and you can only run it on a Windows machine (and some others via emulator, look up EasyRPG Player). It's a good software, but get it on a sale, because you'll probably won't use it as much as I did.
