Crocotile 3D Features

Crocotile 3D is a tile-based 3d modeling editor. Originally released back in 2015 it is the first of its kind to use 2d tiles to construct 3d scenes. In contrast to most 3d applications that are bloated and over-complicated, Crocotile 3D is a simple to use tool targeted at creating lowpoly models and scenes with pixel-art tilesets or low-res textures. Simply select tiles directly from tilesets and place them into a scene to quickly give them a third dimension. Use various tools to edit your tiles and shape your models, let your imagination go wild!

Features

  • Draw and Edit modes to easily add/remove/edit tiles in 3d space.

  • Perspective & Orthographic projection.

  • Export to .obj/.gltf/.glb and use your creations in other programs or in your game development.

  • Import .fbx/.gltf/.glb/.obj files from other applications and continue working with them in Crocotile.

  • Place blocks like minecraft!

  • Modify UVs on tiles, adjust tileset sizes.

  • Paint Editor tools for creating/modifying your tilesets.

  • Rotate, flip, mirror, reverse faces, verts and UVs.

  • Vertex colors.

  • Lights and Shadows.

  • Animated Tiles / UVs

  • Animation and Movie rendering.

  • (NEW) Skinning and Rigging (Bones and Vertex Weights).

  • Split/cut tiles.

Takes a moment to learn, but it's a really good software when you get used to it. And the support is very good. The community on discord is really good too. There is one thing that i'd like to point out however: If the software is purchased via itch.io you can obtain a free steam key for this software. This does not work the other way around because there is no proper way to validate a supposed steam purchase. Maybe that can be solved in the future, but it's not a major issue.

As it currently stands, this app is just too unintuitive and janky for me to really want to recommend it. I've come from using Blender, Trenchbroom, Blockbench and Ultimate Doom Builder, all 3D editors extremely similar to this for very similar types of artstyles and functionalities (aside from blender), all of them free(!!!) and behave a lot better in just about every way you can imagine it. I've made a few tilesets to make a city type scene (which would've been extremely easy to do in any of the software i've tried before) and the whole importing tilesets part of the UI and all was serviceable at least, something i most certainly can't say about Trenchbroom as powerful as that tool is. Issues started flooding in when actually trying to paint in with those tiles, as i spent more time fighting the camera than anything (cameras that pivot around an invisible point are already terrible but even Blender's isn't this hard to feel for the center of it), and when i wasn't fighting the camera i was fighting where the app wanted to actually place the tiles. Not only does it seem to favor an invisible grid over snapping to nearby tiles, but when i tried placing them sideways it seemed to act like a 2D scene and would completely ignore any depth, and again not snapping to the tiles which's edges i had my mouse over!!!! I do know for a fact there are workaround for all of this as i've read a bit of the documentation, but out of all the other alternatives i mentioned (which all are, again, *free*) none require this much time investment to get basic functionality and a good enough workflow out of. If you're reading this and you're wondering what to do then, please use either Blockbench or Trenchbroom instead, or even just Blender with the Sprytile editor (which seems to be the closest in experience to Crocotile, just without the gargantuan mountain of bad). You won't regret skipping this one.

Great and simple 3D modeller, gets better with every update, highly recommend if you are into low poly art or are a 2d artist that cant wrap their head around blender

I had originally written a negative review, but after reading a response from the developer, I feel as though the initial review was unwarranted due to me just straight up missing features. Now on to the review. I still believe this program is great for low poly environmental modelling, and a good first tool for beginner 3D artists who come from a pixel art background. Anyone who has used 2D sprite sheets will be at home. The controls are clunky and janky, but as said in my original review, are completely customizable. I recommend changing the controls to more accurately represent the control scheme in blender or maya, but thats' just personal preference. However, I still believe there are cons, but they are very minor. I still believe the way you enable/disable edge face and vertex selection is very counter-intuitive, it should work the way blender or maya handles it. There is also no face loop selection, which is a huge flaw. A lot of the documentation I feel can be a bit clearer, as with the UI. Despite the flaws, I think this is a fun program to use, and while it won't be anything I use in my professional workflow, I do think its a very capable program and worth your time to at least try out.

this thing rules: - lots of features - good hotkeys and intuitive controls - performance is solid even with complicated scenes with a lot of lighting and shaders - incredible documentation plus links to short, effective youtube videos with practical demonstrations - active discord with lots of help, advice, and the developer is receptive to feature requests cant recommend this software enough.

I've only used this a little bit so far but it's really simple to get into once you've read the documentation (and checked out the several dozen Youtube videos showing exactly how each tool works), it's a tiny bit fiddly but that's just because it's a unique method. It's obvious that a lot of time, effort, consideration and passion went into this to make it as good and simple as possible, extremely well done!!

I don't have much time in this yet but appears to be very capable and is reasonably priced.

Fantastic tool ! Requires some practice to master all the possibilities, but there are a lot of tutorials from the developer to learn how to do everything, really quickly. More, the developer is very active and implements feature requests/ fix bugs really quickly ! I use it daily for multiple projects and it's a really great tool to create outstanding pixel-art 3D pieces in time ! For the price it's definitely a deal :)
