Recursos do M.A.X.: Mechanized Assault & Exploration

Your mission: colonize new worlds on distant planets. As the Mission Commander, you and the Mechanized Assault & Exploration (M.A.X.) force under your command are the first ones in. Mining stations, power plants, tactical combat vehicle factories, habitats – it's up to you to plan and construct them.

The entire new colony? You create it. The resources you find there? Control them. Enemies? Crush 'em! And there will be enemies. You're not the only Mission Commander trying to colonize the planets. You'll have to push yourself to the limit to survive the ultimate showdown in strategic warfare. It's espionage, heavy artillery, offensives, counter offensives and intelligence – all with maximum consequences.

At its core, M.A.X. is about resource-gathering, building, and tactical combat. The game offers more than 50 land, sea, and air units, most of which can be upgraded to improve their armor, speed, and range. You can play as one of eight different factions with different advantages for each one.

  • A level of complexity unseen in contemporary strategy games

  • Choose either simultaneous or turn-based game mode to fit your personal preference

  • Play as one of 8 human clans and use dozens upon dozens of land, sea and air units

Great to see this game on Steam. I put untold hours into this classic 20 years ago, and will quite possibly do so again now. So for the uninitiated who are curious, M.A.X. is a simultaneous turn or turn-based strategy / RTS hybrid... Wonder how that works? Well imagine playing the classic Dune 2 / Command & Conquer with all the RTS mechanics in place as a turn based strategy game. Quite simply it was an innovative risk by developers Interplay that actually paid off! As a result, the game was very highly praised by critics back in the day, and is widely regarded by those who have played it to be one of the greatest Turn based games of all time. It's a game which unlike the RTS games of the day, was never copied or cloned. So to this day still remains rather unique! Whilst the graphics have indeed aged (some would say rather well for a game released in 1996), the core gameplay, its mechanics and the whole package still holds up today. It is a testament to the quality of M.A.X. and if you have any interest in the Strategy genre, because you missed it first time around, or simply was too young or not even born back then, this is well worth picking up! Be aware though, this game is not like an RTS, you cannot rush your opponent and expect to live. This game will crush you if you try. Careful planning, and even planning turns ahead is a key to victory. War in M.A.X. is never easy! But.... However there are a few cons. This is due to the game and its age worth noting. Whilst this game is regarded a masterpiece, it is a diamond in the rough. The game is a little unpolished and still in some instances buggy. From what I can tell, this Steam version is just a re-release and hasn't been updated beyond what fixes existed for the time, so you may run into a crash here or there and/or experience a few live wires. But it doesn't detract from the game too much. Also... This game is old. MS-DOS 1996 old. Whilst we have the miracle of DOSBOX,, Some compiled games run with DOS4GW .bat executables. This has been known to cause issues on modern machines with some older games. M.A.X. is no exception, and there have been reports of the game freezing up and crashing at 100+ turns due to a Memory Stack Overflow bug. Considering certain missions and multiplayer games can go upwards of 300-400 turns, this is a problem if you do experience it. However, all is not lost if you do experience this issue, and all that is required is a bit of manual tinkering. You simply need to convert the DOS4GW executable to DOS32A... How to do that you ask??? The answer is here: https://www.dosbox.com/wiki/TOOLS:DOS32A Overall though. If you can get past a few potential issues with an "As is" game that has stood the test of time. You are in for a treat. This is still one incredible game and is very much welcome on Steam. At the price-point, it's a steal in my book!

This Epic game has never had a proper WinXp/7/10 patch. not in 2001, not in 2010 en not in 2017. it doest work on windows later than 98. The game generates an oldskool error message around turn 50-70 . you never get passed this point. Dont Buy, not even for under 5, it doesnt work! (review written with patch 1.04)

Excellent game. Sophisticated. Even the sound and music. If only modern game developers can, at least, create HD version of this gem...

This game...this game...(sigh)...this game caused me to fail a few college classes while in my junior year at East Tennessee State University. Game addiction is REAL! It became a reality for me in 1996...BEST DANG YEAR OF MY LIFE!!! THANK YOU M.A.X.!! Two of my best friends and I played hot seat games that pushed the limits of patience and physical endurance. For example, it was nothing for us to sit there and play on an ORIGINAL INTEL PENTIUM I from 430pm on Friday to 1am Monday. The only limiting factors were our supply of Hornsby's Cider, toilet paper and pizza. Well, maybe just the cider and the pizza mostly. We smelled GAWD awful sometimes. One of my buddies blew out his knee cap after lightly brushing up against a very intimidating coffee table during a physically strenuous hot seat game with 2min turn limits. We lived in sub-standard apartments and so the gurney from the ambulance would NOT fit in the hallway commons. My buddy laid there and bit hard on a semi-moist, unsanitary rag that my other buddy was just all too happy to offer to help with the pain. We've never seen a situation where a kneecap went totally on the backside of the knee. AMAZING! Even more amazing was that my buddy had the decency to cover his beer bottle so as to not spill the contents of his Hornsby's Cider on the unforgiving, contractor-grade carpet as he fell with the grace of a fainting goat with a yeast infection. It was a magical night for all of us. If you don't get similar experiences while playing M.A.X. ...well, then you're not living your life to the M.A.X. Update 2021: These are true events. My friend did recover 78% of his knee usage from his 1996 incident. And because he accepted the semi-moist rag to muffle his anguish during that time, he also gained the ability to know (unmistakably) what pure organic evil tastes like. While he mysteriously retains only 5 of his teeth today at the age of 50, some would say his gums have never been more supple.

If not few bugs crashing long-play games, and if not some smaller issues (like corrupted saves, crashed after renaming units, forbidding config settigs etc.), this game would be easily the-best-ever strategy game, even for current times. At least, I think of this as the one. This is kind of game, which even with some issues, you want forgive, and you still want to play this game, because is so good.

I loved this game as a kid! After 20 years I can enjoy it again, I am super happy! This was a piece of art and it's still a nice game to play. It's a pity for the 640x480 resolution, it would be nice to see a remastered edition.

I played this game back in 1997 and I do still have a nostalgic love for it. But I loved the game before it was nostalgic. Long before games like Factorio were even a daydream, you had games like M.A.X. It is a simple game lacking many of the features a more modern gamer might expect. There's no level, progression, tiers, or objectives beyond building faster than the enemy so that you can overwhelm them before they overwhelm you. As far as that goes, it's fun for awhile but the AI is simple and very predictable. Once you learn its quirks, you can guide the AI to behave however you want. But the fun for me was always base building. I'd load up a new custom game, set up one AI, quickly overwhelm it and box it into a corner of the map so that I could then build and build to my heart's content. Loved it in '97, still love it today. For those who want a challenge though, there are mission and campaigns that are quite fun and challenging and don't just require you to build like a maniac. Some even use stealth and espionage to accomplish mission objectives. At the end of the day, there was a lot of love and dedication put into this game and it shows. It's old, it's simple, but 25 years later it still brings a smile to my face.

ok... I have been reading a lot about M.A.X. since I had seen that Steam has offered it. To be fair, none of us can honestly blame Steam for the bugginess of this game as it was plenty buggy when it came out. The only way I could play it reasonably before Steam offered it was having multiple computers running win 95, and 98 solely and running it the way it was intended. However, if I was lucky, I might be able to get to turn 225. But after that, it was game over. So I had to play it not only with hopes it would go to 200+ and with an endgame in mind. I started to make a list of things that would create M.A.X. to crash, and was able to side-step some crashes. but that only went so far. I tried years ago to install and run it on a win 7 machine with modifications. However the same problems persisted. I did not bother to remove it from my system with hope that I could play this most entertaining game at some point down the road. Truly, M.A.X. was well ahead of its time back in the mid 1990's. All of this is assuming that you have patch 1.04, I did not patch it further than that because of reviews of advice of not patching after that was safer. Yes I have that patch. And it is the Original English patch. Presently I am engaged in a game that is in excess of 270 turns. With 2 computer opponents. Here are the settings for those interested: First, this was intended to be a turn based game, so I set it at such in the options for setting up a new game. Second, When playing the game, I only have what is necessary toggled. (Grid, Colors, Range, Survey etc) The less of these you have toggled all the time the better. When I need them I do notice lag compared to when I don't, especially in a largely populated area, be it my own camp, or an enemies. Third, this is most important, (for my experience) Have the game installed on your computer, don't run it thru Steam. Fourth, Run it thru DosBox 0.72 The current DosBox version that Steam uses is not stable enough. I believe it is version 0.74, Avoid 0.74 if you can. It will make a big difference. Fifth, If you are familiar with DOS4GW.EXE, all the better. What you will need to do is find MAXRUN.EXE in the original folder, save it in a new folder in case you need to retrieve it. Put DOS4GW.EXE in that same folder where MAXRUN was. Now re-name DOS4GW to MAXRUN.EXE The reason for this is that dos4gw works better with handling the memory buffer and prevents most, not all crashes. As far as where to find these files look into these forums and GOG forums, there are links provided. Sixth and final, I saved my games every 5 turns until I hit turn 100. After that I saved every turn. The game will crash, but with patience and saving often, you can play a nice long game. I hope this helps.. I wholeheartdley endorse this game... but bring your patience.
