I really, really keep trying to like this game. But I can't do it. It has such a good basis to build on, but wow there's so much stupid stuff that just completely blocks you from enjoying it. I wanted to write up a list of all my complaints, but Steam reviews restrict characters. So the main thing I'll focus on is the "difficulty" of the game. It's bad. It's really, really, really bad. First of all, all the missions in the game are pre-generated. There’s no randomness to the challenges you’ll face. They’re all predetermined, and that’s fine. That’s how Advance Wars was, too. Except most of the maps in Advance Wars felt semi-fair from the start. This is where the game starts to move away from Advance Wars and into “what the hell is this” territory. The game didn't invest in a strong AI, so the way it offsets this problem is by throwing 10 enemies for every 1 that you have. That's not an exaggeration; that's an accurate ratio. The problem with this is now your enemy doesn’t really have to play by a strategic rule set. They can just throw enemies at you nonstop with no worries about consequences. So it’s not really like playing against a chess opponent as much as it is fighting off a horde of zombies. But this gets even worse. The enemy isn’t just starting out with more units on the map, they’re starting out with more cities and barracks as well. So now they start the game producing 2-4 times as many units as you are. This problem is now huge. If you don't start the game by making ultra-precise moves, you'll immediately be swarmed by a never-ending horde of enemies and you'll have no hope of ever recovering. So you end up making 5 moves, seeing if it’s viable, and then restarting until you find the “correct” solution. The problem becomes so unbearable that Wargroove stops feeling like a strategy game and more like a puzzle solving game. So you’ll start to wonder if there’s a way to fix this problem so maybe you can enjoy the strategy aspects of the game. Well, let’s review our options. The first way to get out of this problem is to just not play the story. Just play against online opponents, for example. Well even after completing 6 missions in the story, I still only had one character I could play as. So that’s super lame. But it doesn’t matter, because I couldn’t find anybody to play with online. The second way is going to be custom modes. But I couldn’t find any custom modes in the game. My assumption is that they’re all locked behind the story mode content. Okay fine, so we’re back on the story. Is there a difficulty setting? The answer is yes! Unfortunately, it’s also the nail in the freaking coffin for this game. The way it creates difficulty settings in the game is by scaling how much damage you take, how much income you make, and how quickly your character's ultimate ability charges. So let’s recap. The game on its default settings doesn’t really feel like a strategy game with the freedom to choose how I approach problems. It feels like a puzzle game with very forced paths to victory. The way to offset this problem is by changing the rules of the game entirely to benefit me. That’s like if you started playing chess, but found it was too hard for a beginner. So to solve this problem, you disabled your enemy’s ability to capture your pieces. It’s the dumbest idea ever. You’re not even playing chess anymore. I don’t know what you’re playing, but it’s probably not fun for anybody. That’s what Wargroove did. The only way to offset the difficulty of the broken pre-generated missions is to literally break the game rules. The resulting game is not a strategy game. It is EITHER a puzzle game or a sandbox game. I found neither of these to be fun. It’s such a shame, because Advance Wars clearly inspired this. Advance Wars was an absolute blast to play. I beat every single Advance Wars 2 mission on both the normal and hard campaigns with an S-Rank. Even when the game gave your opponent a significant advantage, it felt like there were several ways to approach the challenge. For a moment, I thought it might actually just be a difficult strategy game, but when I’m retrying the game after my first five moves over and over and over again, I just don’t feel like I’m playing a strategy game. It feels like the game is just waiting for me to play the moves that it planned for me to play. And I just can’t enjoy that.

I should note ahead of the rest of this review that I have worked with Chucklefish in several ways. These include making content for the game which resulted in me being a credited level designer, receiving support for running Wargroove tournaments, and being an admin on the official Wargroove discord for over a year. The good: -The Double Trouble campaign and parts of the main campaign are fun. -Additional single player content like puzzle mode can be fun. -Game balance is good enough for fun multiplayer. -The ability to effectively "play-by-mail" makes it easy to play games leisurely with others. -There is a decent amount of existing custom content out there for both single and multiplayer. -The map editor is pretty powerful and good to use at a bunch of different skill levels. -Modding support for PC users. -Possible update and/or sequel has been hinted at by the developers. The bad: -The main single player campaign feels weaker in the second half. -Arcade mode feels pretty lacklustre. -Game balance still has issues. Naval and some other units are regularly banned in competitive play. -Quickplay contains out-of-date maps that didn't age well. Better multiplayer requires effort to find. -Randomness on unit damage can result in frustrating gameplay at times. I've personally stopped playing in large part due to this. -Missing some anti-cheat options for things like fog of war. Not a serious problem when playing with friends, but it did limit serious competition. -Finding good custom content requires quite a bit of extra work. -Modding support is there, but no Steam Workshop support. -No active development for about 2 years. Possible update and/or sequel has only been hinted at by the developers. -The community is pretty small, with many waiting for a sequel and/or update. In conclusion If you're looking for some fun single player content and don't mind doing a bit of research, there is enough out there to justify picking the game up. If you want to play multiplayer with friends in a game that is a bit like Advance Wars, then Wargroove is pretty good on that front too. If you're looking for dozens of hours of high quality single player content or a fleshed out competitive multiplayer experience, you can find better experiences elsewhere. I'm going to mark this as recommended because I genuinely enjoyed a lot of the 1300+ hours I spent with the game, but I would say do a bit of research before deciding whether to pick it up.

I don't typically leave reviews, but after hitting nearly 6000 hrs in the game, I thought that maybe I might like the game enough to write one. When it first came out, it looked interesting, but I originally wasn't sure if I wanted to buy Wargroove. While I was a big fan of Advance Wars, I'd never been the type to get into any of its spiritual successors over the years. However, I had a lot of experience with designing competitive PvP maps for Advance Wars and the fan-based competitive Wargroove community, "Groove of War", was looking for people like me to help design PvP maps for their events. I couldn't say no to what seemed like an such exciting endeavor, so I took the plunge. I knew how to design an AW map, but to understand WG map design better, I had to pay through the campaign. The AW campaigns were never the highlights for me, so I didn't have high expectations, but I found it fun nonetheless. There were some slow missions and overall I think there could be improvements, but playing the AI had always felt that way to me so I didn't mind much. Other than that, the characters, music, and art were incredible and did a great job keeping me invested while I was out of my element. Once I had a good grasp on the game, I started designing maps for Groove of War events, and before long I ended up becoming an admin for the community when the previous server owner stepped down. Along with a great group of volunteer staff, we've run competitive events for over 3 years, and I think this PvP setting is where the game thrives. While it has similarities to AW, it's also very distinct in many ways, from the capture mechanics, to the way commanders and grooves work, to how critical hits impact tactics. These differences I think give the game a fresh feel while still paying homage to the series that inspired it, and gave me plenty of interesting things to think about when designing maps. That said, the game does have some flaws that competitive maps and events had to work around, such as some units or commanders being too strong for use in competitive events. Over the years, the developers have made efforts to address the competitive community's concerns, most notably including a transparently discussed, community-driven balance patch that came out with the release of the free Double Trouble DLC (which was great!!). Along with this, some of the old stock maps in the game were replaced with community-designed maps, earning several players a spot in the game credits (myself included). While this was and still is a huge improvement, this list was unfortunately never updated, leaving the maps for the game's built-in QuickPlay PvP mode a bit out of date by competitive standards, though still quite good for casual games. Overall, despite its flaws, my experience with both the game and the developers have been very positive. Although my experiences may have left me biased, I'd strongly recommend this to anyone who played and enjoyed the AW series. I think the highlights for me are the art and music, both casual and competitive PvP, and the fun map design challenges that the game's features and quirks presented me.

"Advance Wars, refined." 313 hours on file, that's probably accurate, there's a lot of afk time (great type of game to play before bed) on this steam version and I've played on the Switch as well. I just can't find many games with a battle system like this (Fire Emblem comes close but it's not close enough!!!) Beautiful art and animations, a lovely story too, and the intro cinematic is incredible. Units are balanced very well, you have so many great choices for unit composition because of how useful they can all be in their own way. The commander units have really fun skills (it's their "Groove.") They don't grant any passive buffs/debuffs to the army (if you're here because of Advance Wars) but there are a TON of commanders to play with and they will certainly change your playstyle anyhow. The campaign is huge and filled with side quests... and some time after release they released a co-op campaign (you can play it solo, you basically control two commanders and their armies one after another) so... yeah... there is a ton of content for this game. Oh yeah, and that co-op update added more commanders too, super cool! There's fun to be had in arcade mode as well, and they make it this little mini-story so it's worth completing with each commander! They get a special ending... a weird reference here but... if you know how the Twisted Metal endings went... it's something like that! Very fun!!! And as if there wasn't enough fun to have in this truly sprawling game, there are some pretty decent custom maps that the community has made, thanks to all of the dev support it's very easy/comfy to browse and download custom content. I don't think any of it compares to the main campaign but some come very close! And that's not to say the custom content is weak, rather the mainline stuff is just so well done it's hard for anyone to compete. An old friend who was obsessed with Advance Wars and it's sequel suggested this game to me, I had never played AW before so this was new to me and I absolutely love it. I went and played AW (currently still playing it) not only to experience the "original" but because it's so hard to find a tactics game of this specific format. Sooooo... having played AW now (I love it as well) I actually think Wargroove is BETTER than it's predecessors on the GBA. --------------------- VERY worth your time, it's an absolute STEAL at the current price point, if this game interests you you should NOT feel bad about picking it up at full price. --------------------- Extra note - the controls are really comfy, controller, kb/m, they're both super duper comfy.

As a fan of the Advance Wars series, I was excited to try out Wargroove. And the game does actually give a good first impression. Spearmen crit when next to each other! Rangers crit when standing still! This makes it look like the game will have tactical depth, however, the problems soon begin to manifest themselves. The Advance Wars series already have a problem with unit spam, but here, it's significantly worse. The fact that bases don't give money, there's generally a lower income/base ratio, and that cheaper units are significantly more cost-efficient, means that unit spam is even more encouraged. This makes battles drag on as you pump out cheap fodder turn after turn, while slogging through the enemy who's doing the same. In fact, if there's one word that describes Wargroove, it's "slog". Another problem I noticed, is the sheer ease that you can accidentally enter a wrong command. Ever had a ranger slam into a enemy in melee? Or a unit captures a village from the wrong tile? This caused me to be extra-careful and double- and triple-check every single command I input (especially with no way to undo), which makes the game even more sloggy. Many of the units have low move. This problem is further exacerbated by the sheer amount of terrain in this game. Unlike in Advance Wars, infantry units don't even get reduced terrain costs. That, combined with the sheer number of units in this game, means my units are constantly getting stuck and tripping over themselves. Just one more thing to add to the slogginess of this game. There's actually not as much tactics as you might think. There's a heavy rock-paper-scissors element to unit matchups, so most of the time, what units you want get is plainly obvious according to what the enemy has. Knight? Pikeman/ranger. Air unit? Mage. Giant? Trebuchet. The objective of every mission is basically to assemble the perfect composition of units that can counter anything the enemy throws at you, slowly move them towards the enemy, and replace any losses as needed. Once you reach the critical mass of units, the rest of the mission becomes anticlimactic, as it's just cleanup, but having to do that every battle gets tiresome very quickly. Naval combat in Advance Wars is fundamentally flawed, and not only does Wargroove do nothing to fix that, it actually makes the problem worse by constantly shoving naval maps down your throat. Those naval maps are extra-sloggy because of how expensive naval units are. The ranking system, while optional, is annoying. For some reason, the devs decided that only turn count matters to ranking. As somebody that likes to play it slow and steady, and prefers to preserve their units, I don't appreciate being told that I'm a bad tactician because I didn't throw away my units in order to beat a map faster. Especially on maps where you can't recruit units. For some reason, every faction and commander has the exact same units with the exact same stats. Only the commander unit is different, and even then, only the ability is different, the stats are the same. That just makes commander choice less interesting. Why can't Wargroove have commanders like Grit and Max, who give their units noticeable strengths and weaknesses? Even a Days of Ruin system would've been more interesting. While it's nice that the devs added a way to customize the difficulty, these options are only as good as the game itself. If the game is good, the custom options can make it better and more replayable. But when Wargroove is already a slog as-is, increasing the difficulty only serves to make it even more sloggy. Don't be fooled by my playtime. It's not a measure of how fun the game is, it's a measure of how tedious it is. That, and because I'm such a big Advance Wars fan, I was desperately clinging onto hope that Wargroove would turn around and become fun at some point. So I played the game way more than I should have, before I finally gave up hope. 2/10

This review is right on the edge between positive and negative. Wargroove does a lot of things very well, but the last two missions in the campaign were very bad, and soured my opinion of the game as a whole.

    What is it?

Wargroove is a turn-based, tactical strategy game, heavily inspired by the Advance Wars series on the GBA and Nintendo DS. Battles typically involve one or more armies, each with a headquarters, a powerful commander unit, troops, and buildings like barracks where you can spend gold to produce troops. On a player's turn, each unit can move and take an action (usually attacking an enemy unit or building). On offense, a unit attacks first, then takes counterattack damage from the enemy unit. Damage dealt is proportional to the health of the attacking unit (a unit at 100% health deals much more than a unit at 10% health), which means that a lot of the strategy involves getting the first strike, in order to cripple your enemy's ability to counterattack. A team wins by either defeating their opponent's commander or destroying their headquarters.

    The Good:

Wargroove does an excellent job of capturing the spirit of 2000s handheld turn based tactical games like Advance Wars. The spritework and visuals are excellent. While the writing and voice acting doesn't really work for me as an adult, It feels like an intentional attempt to faithfully capture the tone and maturity level of GBA Advance Wars / Fire Emblem / etc. The game also has a considerable amount of content, between a fairly lengthy campaign, a long list of (surprisingly complicated) puzzles, and an arcade mode. Ultimately if you have nostalgia for Advance Wars, you'll probably like this game, which is why I give it a positive review.

    The Mediocre:

These type of games can often feel quite slow, which is not a problem for everyone, but can be annoying to some players, and can be really annoying if missions are designed poorly. Basically because getting the first strike is so valuable (and getting hit by the first strike is so disastrous) it is fairly hard to push forward aggressively. Often the best strategy vs the AI in the campaign is to move your units right up to the edge of the opponent's attack range, so that they can't attack you, but if they try to move forward you can attack them. As a result, lots of missions involve a very slow and methodical push. Most missions are won by slowly developing control over the map and developing total unit superiority (e.g., you have 20 units, your enemy only has 5) before pushing in to win. The end result is that you can "win" many missions by turn 6 or so (in that, if you continue to play adequately you will almost certainly win), but you can't actually end the mission until turn 16-20, so it often feels like you are just "going through the motions" until the level ends. Another strange decision was introducing the water units so late into the game. Some of the best missions were the ones where I had access to land, sea, and air units, because that's when the strategy of the game is at its best. It was interesting to, e.g., play a more guerrilla style land game against my opponent's superior land forces while I developed ocean superiority, knowing that I could eventually win the land game with the aid of long range warships. When the game is just ground units (or even ground and air), many of those strategic decisions don't exist. But because they introduce ships so late into the game, there are only like 3 or 4 missions where it really feels I was getting the whole experience.

    The Bad:

Far too many of the campaign missions involve no production buildings (barracks, sea ports, air unit producers), and just involve the player pushing a clump of units against an enemy with horrible AI but a much much larger set of units. These missions are extremely tedious, because the gameplay devolves into checking your opponent's movement and attack ranges and slowly pushing right to the edge of those ranges, trying to minimize the damage your army takes because you have no way to reinforce and have limited healing. They generally play out like a much worse version of Fire Emblem. There is maybe one or two of these that were legitimately interesting, but most of them were just slogs. I think it would be OK if they were side missions, but several of them are mandatory missions. Even worse, for whatever reason, the final mission and the epilogue mission are both the most egregious examples of this type of gameplay. I met the conditions for unlocking the epilogue mission, saw the starting unit positions, then quit the game without even attempting it. It's maybe the least interesting final stretch in any game I've ever played. If any developer reads this, please don't put these kind of levels in the sequel, or at the very least, keep them as shorter side missions.

    TL;DR:

Overall a good, lovingly-crafted AdvanceWars-esque game with some horribly unsatisfying campaign levels, particularly at the end of the game.
