In short: Being released in 2008, Collapse is dated, but still the good slasher/shooter action game combination. If you play for the challenge, then go ahead, if you need only the newest blimps and easy Platinum for you profile page numbers, then look the other way. Full review: For the game released in Ukraine in 2008, it has quite prophetical scenario start. Just read the game's description on the store page! "In 2013 the Central Europe (Ukraine, Kiev) witnessed a catastrophe... Somebody called it the collision of worlds or the stratification of two dimensions." How did they knew, huh? Another bad joke about Collapse game is that you may even want to play it... but it keep collapsing over and over. Seriously, this thing has crushed dozens of times, while I was playing it on Win10 without WinXP compatibility option. And when I turned it on, the Steam layout was out, and I'm soo tied to the ability of making screenshots... Nevermind! The game is the good one, see? Of course, it was much better at the time of release (not really, but I don't remember it crushing back then). Of course, there are many titles now which are ways superior to this aged-not-so-well-game. However. Somehow, its developers succeed in making proper 50% slasher/50% shooter game, all in right proportions! With the quite agile character, motion-captured awesome acrobatics, which is good both to dodge the bullets and swords. Like in the closest analog, Devil May Cry series, there will be the platformer levels, where you need to jump, jump a lot... There will be some puzzles which you need to solve (like how to click three switches with one person - simultaneously), and some levels based on real-world Kiev surroundings. Like Kiev-Pechersk Lavra, one of the most sacred grounds for all of the Orthodox christians... or Maidan Nezalezhnosti (Independence Square), where lies the center of the anomaly... Remember, it's not about politics, it's a slasher/shooter game, where you need to fight local warlords and monsters from the other dimension (looking much like Half-Life, especially the headcrabs). And presumably save the world once more, of course... Slasher part is somewhat bland at first. All the combos you can perform with your sword are about one mouse button (and directions for additional chains of moves). On the first level, when you still don't know the most spectacular moves, where you need to use timings in clicking, you may even prefer to shoot the melee opponents with guns, no matter how armored they are... however, there is one little hint: use the throw move and then finishing move on every difficult close-combat enemy. You'll save much health and ammo that way. Next, the shooter part. While the diversity of weapons isn't that high, you have plenty of dodging moves, which allows you to do some cool tricks with evading enemy shooters and slashing them in melee (they die quite fast from the sword, but you need to know what you're doing). You have a pistol, shotgun or assault rifle, sometimes sniper rifle, and in some specific places, heavy machineguns or rocket launchers, to add impact! Like that shootout in the underground garage. Concrete crumbles, dust flies, screams, shots from all sides ... extravaganza! Also, while the levels are generally linear, there is also quite a bit of old-time exploring, where you can find secret places with more guns or even big green DNA jars, which are so good to your healthbar... Yummi! Finally, there are bosses! Some are numerous and bothersome, like Worms or Sentinels, others are quite unique. And then, there is a final boss, which is a real backside pain even on the easy difficulty! In the most of the bosses fights, you need to shoot and/or slash them, maybe use some special powers of yours, and then goes the QTE sequence, where you need to click the buttons to finish the monster. Overall, is there a reason to buy the game now? If you don't mind outdated graphics, very weak presentation of the story for the non-russian audience (subtitles only), and want a challenge of the game without achievements to put on your profile... Then yes! You're welcome! The price is quite low for the quality, especially with the usual Steam sales. The challenge is solid: you learn your moves, and overcome disorder. And it will not be an easy walking... The story isn't the game's best selling point, sure, but you all know the drill - move forward, kill the enemies, save the world. Nothing goes beside it anyway. In my book, it is the fair 6/10 and personal upvote. I've played the game on release, and the only thing which is not good now, after 10 years, is about crushes. Turn on the WinXp compatibility, don't use AltTab too often, and you'll be fine. I almost forgot to tell, the soundtrack is awesome! Very easy to remember tunes of alternative rock, quite suitable for the overall style of the game.

Somewhere after 2007 every third person game with guns became Gears of War, there was no survivors. This one is the last remnant of dying order. No cover snapping, your protagonist is not a bag of potatoes who goes into hypervoid when he sprints, no regenerations and checkpoint ammo refills, just good ol medkits and ammo boxes at convenient places. You need to strafe, you need to conserve ammo, sometimes it sword time and guns are not good anymore. It feels pleasnt enough to get it a go for several evenings.

When you are trying to figure out which way to go and when you find it, enemies spawn like a camscare. Blocking is awful but other combat style is pretty good.

Story sucks. Trash gun mechanics but enjoyable hack and slash. Graphics are pretty good for 2008. Gameplay is good but could have been way better. Overall not a bad experience

Very dated gameplay, but probably about right for its era. Defeat waves of enemies that spawn out of nowhere to move forward. Melee is hold a direction and spam left click, but the blocking system is so basic that you get whooped by large groups of melee enemies unless you resort to your pistol with regenerating ammo. This results in you jumping around the area until it reloads, dumping the mag into someone, and repeating. Enemies are very derivative of Half Life. Story is very B Movie. Couldn't stick with it for much more than an hour

Collapse is a 3D person action game that looks promising at first, but quickly descends into boredom and frustration. Even on the easiest difficulty certain enemies take forever to be killed, which doesn't help when there are at least 2 subsets of enemies; those weak to firearms and those weak to the sword. Use the wrong type of weapon against one of the subsets and it'll take a while before they die, and let me tell you, it takes a bunch of ammo sometimes to take down certain enemies weak to firearms. To make matter worse, stages are pretty lengthy and may have you teamed with a companion who you need to make sure doesn't die. They can help in battle thankfully, but you still need to be careful with them to not get a game over and continue from a check point. AND IF THAT'S NOT BAD ENOUGH, the game has QTEs. If you found them trite from games of the 2000s and early 2010s, they're just as trite in this game as well, which becomes annoying when they are mandatory to finish off an enemy or boss. I can't comment on if this game was worthwhile back when it released, it might be worth trying out as a curiosity (like I did), but you'd be better off playing other European developed action games or shooters. If you are still curious about experiencing this game for yourself....well just steel your temperament as you trudge through the game. One last thing I will say about this game: Never give a white man rasta hair in a post apocalyptic Easter European setting.

This is the most relevant game right now. War torn Ukraine: Check Dangerous biolabs: Check Power-hungry politicians: Check On a serious note, it's a very decent action shooter/slasher. The enemy designs are cool, the battle animation dynamic and the music is pumpin'! NewTone really did a great job on that. I wish the standalone DLC Rage was released too.

A pretty good shooter/slasher mix. Balanced alright, few but pretty large chapters (10 total + Prologue, I think), the visuals are solid, destructive bits are nice wherever involved, and it doesn't bore for the 20 hours it took me to complete it digging into every single corner for secrets. Fair warning, though, the game appears to crash occasionally (probably some overflow issue), and a pair of save files around the tank boss end up corrupted and impossible to load from. Other than that... Yeah, I loved it in 2008, and I love it still.

Interesting Eurojank with great style, though unfortunately I think they put more time into simulating Dreadlocks than making the combat satisfying.

Despite a few hiccups I had a lot of fun with collapse. The combat system here is a lot of fun and is the main selling point of the game. I feel like in most modern day shooters comabt has become very formulaic, duck behind cover, pop out, shoot a few times. If you get shot wait a few seconds for the red on the screen to fade and repeat. Collapse does not fall into this pattern at all, you have a health bar and it does not recharge. There are a pretty generous amount of health pick-ups along the way, as well as health paks that you can store(up to 3) that fully recharge your health, but monitoring your health is important because if you take too much damage it can hurt you later in the level. There is cover, the battlegrounds are generally littered with it, but the cover is extremely destructable and if you think you can hide in one spot and pop in and out you will die a pretty quick death. Instead the game encourages a fast paced run and gun style of play. If you are strafing the enemies generally have a hard time hitting you so it is important to be on the move constantly and occasionally duck for cover when needed to catch a breather for a moment. You have access to 2 guns, a sword and several powers that slowly recharge as time goes on and combat varies from huge gunfights to a bunch of armored thugs rushing you with swords. It is all fast paced and generaly a lot of fun, and the mix of swordplay/gunplay and smart use of powers make the combat in this game a lot of fun. The story here is pretty good with a nice twist, there are a lot of optional conversations you can have and a lot of documents you can find that flesh out the story, it is nothing amazing but it is better than what is found in the average 3rd person shooter. My only complain about the game is near the very end of the game there is a platforming section that is abyssmally done. This game is a great shooter but a terrible platformer and the fact that the developers chose to throw in 2 platforming sections (one on act 8 and one on the last act, 10) is very annoying, liberal checkpoints help but you will die on these things and you will be annoyed. It is not enough to deter me from recommending this game though, it is a fun, fast paced game and if you are into good 3rd person action games you should give it a run.
